My kitchen defines my family’s health and happiness, so whenever I can, I go out of my way to make it look exquisite! Refurbishing your kitchen can bestow a well-organized cooking space that elevates its look. But as much as I love a gorgeous kitchen just like the next Aucklander, I am not busting my budget just to remodel my cooking haven; not with the current economic climate!
So with years of doing my own research and personal experiences of doing my own renovations, I discovered simple ways you can adopt to upgrade your kitchen without breaking your bank. Here I have listed few pointers for a budget friendly kitchen renovation.
Research
Always do your research before employing a contractor or a company for your renovation. Get several quotes, compare these quotes, and ask the company as many questions as you can. Do a little research about the company and what their past projects have been like to get an idea of what their experience has been like. This process has helped me shortlist the companies that can potentially execute my renovation up to my satisfaction.
Shop Around
When you give your contractor the entire responsibility of shopping for you, it definitely won’t curb your expenses. And if you are not careful you could be paying for things that you could have saved on. So once you have decided on accessories like cabinets, drawers, slabs and other fixtures, shop for the materials yourself. Put on your sleuthing cap and search the market for the best rates. Choosing a wholesale store is a smart starting point because you get suppliers at a wholesale price.

Decide Between Ready-made Or Custom Design
While renovating your kitchen, you will be presented with two options, one would be to customise your kitchen or to get ready-made designs. Custom made designs are ideal as they save your pocket from excess expenses. An expert can help you decide on your spacing requirements and choosing the appropriate equipment that can fit your kitchen interiors well. To curtail the expenses, so you are not racking out a new kitchen cost in NZ, it is best to opt for a design that fits within your requirements and still leave adequate space for movement.

However we usually advice our clients to leave the big work for the professionals as quality should not be compromised for money.
Already have all your own trades and you’re comfortable managing them for your kitchen renovation?
Although we don’t recommend if you haven’t renovated a kitchen before and/or you don’t have trades people you can trust, most renovations if not all comes with it’s own surprises because not all homes are the same – this is where experience/project management plays an important role in minimises risks to maintain costs/delays giving you higher certainty of outcome/quality backed by associated guarantees and warranties.
However, if you do intend to manage the kitchen renovation yourself, it does work out more cost effective to contact a kitchen cabinetry manufacturer directly to get the kitchen cabinets designed, manufactured and installed – leaving you to manage the other trades such as flooring, demolition, painting, plastering, splashback/tiling, electrician, plumber, and sometimes a carpenter/builder.
