If you are considering a bathroom renovation, these are some of the latest bathroom renovation Auckland trends of 2018. For inspiration, browse our recent bathroom designs.

Include more Storage

Most bathrooms look messy and unkempt because of toiletries and other items lying around. Auckland Bathroom owners in 2018 are adding more storage in their bathroom so that all those things can be safely stored away giving the bathroom a chick and modern look. Drawers, cabinets, and shelves are great for bathrooms. You can also consider having an invisible storage to create an impression of space. The tidier your bathroom space is, the bigger it appears.

Adding plants

Auckland is a home to diverse plants and beautiful diaspora. Plants are not only great for your living room, they can also make your bathroom great. Plants generally love humidity and the bathroom provides lots of that. Some plants smell great and will help the bathroom smell nice without putting artificial sprays. These plants may be placed in dedicated areas or just around the room as space allows.

Three-Dimensional Tile

Manufacturers nowadays now create all sorts of three-dimensional designs using basic tiles. There are lots of designs and shapes to choose from. These designs are not just used on the bathroom floor, they can also be used on shower walls, as bathroom backsplashes, and ceiling accents for bold accents. These designs are great for bathroom renovations in Auckland.

The Industrial Look

Designers of Auckland bathrooms are implementing unique and imperfect pieces such as the washbasins or metal bathtubs and incorporating that into the stylish modern bathroom. The result is an industrial feel whenever homeowners step into the bathroom. The beauty of this trend is that homeowners do not need to go all out and they can get this bathroom look by self-creating the look they desire.

Wood finishes

Wood is the new tile for Auckland bathroom renovations. Apart from the fact that wood finishes are pleasing to look at, it also brings warmth to the bathroom in colder climates. It is also great for walls and storage spaces of the bathroom.

bathroom renovation add value vs capitalisation
    Bathroom Renovation

Does a Bathroom Renovation Add Value, or Is It Overcapitalising?

Quick answer: Renovating a bathroom adds value when it fixes what a buyer or inspector would mark down and suits the rest of the house, and it becomes overcapitalising once the spend outruns what homes on your street sell for.

Two Auckland homeowners can spend the same $30,000 on a bathroom and get opposite results. One fixes a leaking shower, tired pipework and a fan that never cleared the steam, in a house that was otherwise in good shape. The other fits a stone bath and brass tapware into a 1970s brick-and-tile home with its original kitchen and a roof that needs work. The first has protected the price of the house. The second has bought a lovely room that the next buyer will discount against everything around it.

Bathrooms and kitchens are the two rooms buyers look at hardest, so it’s no surprise they top most renovation lists. The useful question isn’t whether a new bathroom adds value in general. It’s whether this spend, in this house, on this street, buys something a buyer or valuer would recognise, or something only you will enjoy. Both are good reasons to renovate the home you live in. You just want to know which one you’re paying for.

Does Renovating a Bathroom Add Value? What Actually Moves the Price

Usually, yes, though not in the way most people expect. A buyer isn’t looking for the most extravagant bathroom with the boldest design. They’re looking for a room with sound plumbing, up-to-date fixtures and a look that suits the rest of the house. A buyer pays for a bathroom that won’t cost them money, not for the most expensive one on the street. What they mark down hard is anything that reads as a future bill: soft flooring, mould on the ceiling, grout washing out of the shower, an extractor fan that hums and moves nothing.

What a buyer’s inspector looks for in a bathroom

The Real Estate Authority’s consumer site, settled.govt.nz, tells buyers how to check a renovated property: have a professional assess the quality of the work and materials, check that any renovation got the council consent it needed, and compare the work with the consents listed in the LIM. It names mould, soft flooring and poor-quality workmanship as signs of a renovation that may cause trouble later. That’s the checklist your bathroom will be read against, whether you sell next year or in fifteen.

A LIM (land information memorandum) is the council’s report on a property. Under section 44A of the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987, it must include information on any consent, certificate, notice, order or requisition the council has issued for the land or any building on it. A bathroom that was moved or added under a consent, with its paperwork closed off, shows up as finished work. One that needed a consent and never got one shows up as a question the buyer’s lawyer will ask.

The faults that cost more than the renovation

The expensive bathroom problems sit behind the tiles. BRANZ’s Level guidance on waterproofing tiled showers says tiled showers need good membrane detailing and careful plumbing to stay waterproof, that poor work can lead to leaks and expensive repairs, and that under Building Code clause B2 the waterproofing under wet-area tiling must have a durability of at least 15 years. A leak that has run into the floor framing for years turns a cosmetic job into a structural one.

So if your shower has been leaking, the value is in fixing the cause properly. New tiles laid over a failed membrane look fine at the open home and fail again for the next owner.

💡 Quick tip: Before you price finishes, press on the floor beside the shower and the toilet for any give, and look at the ceiling above the shower for mould. Either one moves your budget from fittings to the structure of the room.

Why your rating valuation won’t show the new bathroom

settled.govt.nz also points out that the rating value (RV) council uses to set your rates is not necessarily market value, and that it may not reflect recent improvements, especially ones that didn’t need consent. A like-for-like bathroom renovation, the most common kind, often needs no consent at all. So don’t judge whether your bathroom added value by your next RV notice. The real test is what a buyer, an agent or a registered valuer makes of it.

Where Overcapitalising Starts: How to Find Your Street’s Ceiling

Overcapitalising means putting more money into a house than the value it adds, usually because the house can’t sell for much more than the homes around it, however good its bathroom is. Every street has a rough ceiling. A villa in Grey Lynn and a 1980s townhouse in Henderson sit under very different ones, and the same bathroom spend means something different in each.

We’ll be upfront: nobody can give you an honest percentage for what a bathroom returns. We don’t know of any New Zealand dataset that measures it, and a figure quoted without one is a guess. Your street’s recent sales are the evidence that counts. The good news is that this evidence is cheap or free to get.

Read the recent sales near you

settled.govt.nz’s guide to working out what your home is worth suggests looking at nearby sale prices online, with two cautions: some sites aren’t up to date with the latest sales, and you have to allow for each property’s condition and features. In practice, look for homes of a similar age, size and section that sold recently, and look closely at the bathrooms in the listing photos. If the top sales on your street all have tidy mid-range bathrooms, that’s what buyers there are paying for.

Ask an agent for an appraisal before you set the budget

The same guide describes a current market appraisal: an agent visits, assesses the condition of the house and compares it with similar local properties that sold recently, and you’re under no obligation to list with them afterwards. Ask two agents who sell in your suburb the direct question. What would this house fetch with the bathroom as it is, and what would it fetch with a mid-range renovation? Their answers won’t match exactly, and the spread tells you something too.

💡 Quick tip: Take the agent’s two figures, as it is and renovated, and compare the gap with the band you’re looking at. If the gap is smaller than the spend, you’re renovating for your own use. That’s a perfectly good reason, as long as you know it going in.

When a registered valuer is worth paying for

A registered valuer charges for a valuation, which takes into account local sales, the type of property, its features and what it’s built from, and settled.govt.nz points homeowners to the Property Institute (PINZ) to find one. It also suggests asking your valuer or agent what they’d recommend before you take on major work. That’s money well spent when the bathroom is part of a bigger plan, such as adding an ensuite, renovating before a sale or borrowing against the finished house.

Does the style of your bathroom match the rest of the house?

Your bathroom doesn’t have to match the rest of your house exactly. Most bathrooms that sell well are versatile in style and carry more or less the same feel as the house around them. The problem comes when a bathroom is the polar opposite of everything else: an ultra-modern, sleek bathroom in a 1920s villa, or a country-style bathroom in a crisp 2000s townhouse. Our gallery of bathroom designs we’ve built shows styles that sit comfortably within an Auckland home.

Bathroom with large grey porcelain wall and floor tiles, a freestanding bath, wall-hung white vanity, heated towel rail and a frameless glass shower

Large-format grey tiles, a freestanding bath and a frameless shower: a neutral finish that suits most houses rather than one particular year

Here’s how our published Auckland price bands line up against the value question. These are the figures on our FAQ page, as at 19 Oct 2026.

Tier Our published Auckland range What it covers The value question to ask first
Budget refresh $8,000–$15,000 New paint, fittings and minor tiling Are the waterproofing and plumbing sound enough to leave alone?
Mid-range full renovation $25,000–$35,000 Design, supply, all trades and project management Does the finish sit at the same level as the kitchen and the rest of the house?
Custom luxury $35,000–$65,000+ Premium materials, structural changes or a wet room Do the best recent sales on your street carry this level of finish?

Source: the bathroom price bands on our FAQ page. The final figure depends on the size of the room, your product choices, whether consent is needed and how complex the job is.

When Are You Planning to Sell? Timing Changes the Answer

This is the question that decides what you should renovate in your bathroom, and how far you should go. The same room can be a sensible spend for someone staying ten years and a poor one for someone listing in spring.

Selling within a year or two

settled.govt.nz’s advice on preparing a property for sale is blunt: think carefully about major renovations, because you may not get your money back on big jobs like modernising a kitchen or bathroom before selling. It puts low-cost work first, such as decluttering, cleaning, touch-ups and repairs, along with fixing leaks and making sure you have consent and compliance documents for any changes you’ve made. If you’re selling within a year or two, repairs and paperwork usually beat a full renovation.

If you are planning to sell soon, make sure any bathroom work is in step with the rest of the house when the sale happens. If the house is old and needs refurbishment throughout, there’s little point renovating just the bathroom. A new bathroom on its own won’t lift a tired house. The better move is to spread the budget and fix the important things around the house rather than spending it all in one room.

Front of a two-storey Auckland home with white weatherboard, dark stone cladding panels and a double garage, the street view a buyer sees first

Buyers judge the bathroom against the house it sits in, so the two need to be at the same level

    Staying five years or more

If you’re staying, value means two things: what the room is worth to you every morning, and what it’s still worth to a buyer in ten years. Renovating around a current trend fails the second test. A trend can go out of fashion and make the bathroom feel dated long before the fittings wear out. Keep it simple: good-quality products, a sound plumbing system, a layout that works and fixtures that don’t shout a particular year. Our own FAQ makes the same point about design trends: good proportions, quality waterproofing and classic tile formats outlast any of them.

Renovating one room in a house that needs several

Imagine a 1950s weatherboard bungalow in Hillsborough with original wiring, a kitchen from the 1990s and one tired bathroom. Spending the top of the luxury band on that bathroom leaves the next buyer pricing the wiring and the kitchen anyway. A mid-range bathroom plus a start on the wiring does more for the house, and for you living in it. The order matters as much as the spend.

💡 Quick tip: Selling soon? Fix the dripping tap, regrout the shower, replace a fan that doesn’t clear steam and find the plumbing and electrical certificates for any past work. Those cost little and answer the questions a buyer’s inspector will ask.

Does a New Bathroom or Ensuite Add Value?

Adding a bathroom is a different decision from upgrading one. A second bathroom or an ensuite changes how the house works. A four-bedroom family home with one bathroom is a queue every morning, and buyers with children notice it on the first walk-through. Adding a bathroom fixes a shortfall in how the house works; upgrading one improves a room you already have. That’s why the street-ceiling test still applies, but the answer often lands differently.

An ensuite inside the existing floor area

Carving an ensuite out of a large bedroom, a walk-in wardrobe or a hall cupboard avoids building new floor area, but it adds sanitary fixtures. Schedule 1 of the Building Act 2004 exempts replacing sanitary plumbing in the same position with comparable products (clause 32), and altering existing sanitary plumbing only where the total number of sanitary fixtures in the building doesn’t increase (clause 35), both when an authorised plumber does the work. A new ensuite adds fixtures, so it falls outside those exemptions, and it also needs a drainage route to reach it.

💡 Quick tip: Before you design an ensuite, find out where the nearest drain runs. An ensuite that backs onto the existing bathroom or kitchen wall is far simpler to plumb than one on the other side of the house.

A second bathroom in an extension

Where there’s no room inside, the bathroom comes with new floor area. Our FAQ prices a single-storey Auckland extension at $2,000–$5,500 per square metre, and adding a kitchen or bathroom pushes it into $3,500–$5,000 per square metre. That makes it a house-extension decision as much as a bathroom one, and it’s where reading your street’s ceiling matters most, because the numbers get large quickly.

Does having a bath add value?

Walk-in showers replacing baths in family bathrooms is one of the styles our FAQ lists as in demand across Auckland, and it works well in an ensuite or a second bathroom. In a house with only one bathroom, our advice is different: if the buyers in your suburb are mostly families with young children, keep a bath, because taking out the only one narrows who the house suits. There’s no NZ data on this we’d stand behind. It’s a judgement about who buys on your street, and a local agent can tell you.

    What about the laundry?

Laundries follow the same logic on a smaller scale. A tidy laundry with proper storage and an extractor removes an easy buyer objection for a modest spend. Moving the laundry into the bathroom or a cupboard adds plumbing work, and the same consent questions apply whenever fixtures move or increase.

Important note: Whether your bathroom work needs a building consent depends on exactly what changes. Moving plumbing, adding fixtures, changing walls or working under a heritage overlay can each trigger one. This is general information, not consent advice: confirm your plans with Auckland Council or a Licensed Building Practitioner, and have sanitary plumbing, drainlaying and electrical work done by authorised tradespeople. Our in-house Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP #BP156911) oversees compliance on consent-related work we take on.

What Adds Value and What Overcapitalises: Where the Money Goes

Most of the value in a bathroom sits in the parts a buyer can’t see, so spend there first and on the showpieces second. Here is how that splits in practice.

Want a price for your bathroom renovation?
    Open the calculator →

Worth the money in almost any house

    • Waterproofing done to standard. The membrane is the part of the room that decides whether it lasts, and the part nobody can check once the tiles are down.
    • Ventilation that actually clears steam to the outside, so the ceiling and paint stay clean.
    • Plumbing replaced in its existing position where the layout already works.
    • Safe surfaces. BRANZ’s Level guidance on wet area design recommends a textured or slip-resistant floor finish and a shower or bath with a slip-resistant surface, which matters to every buyer with young children or older parents.
    • Neutral tile formats, good lighting at the mirror and enough storage to keep the vanity clear.

Where the spend stops coming back

Our FAQ’s list for keeping bathroom costs down reads like a list of where money disappears: floor-to-ceiling tiling where half-height would do, moving plumbing that didn’t need to move, top-tier brands where mid-range fixtures would perform the same, and changing selections once the build has started. Add to that any luxury feature the best homes on your street don’t have. None of those is wrong if you want it for yourself. They’re just the parts a buyer is least likely to pay you back for.

    Paperwork that protects the value

The certificates are part of what you’re buying. Our FAQ lists what a renovation should hand over: plumbing and electrical certificates of compliance, a waterproofing warranty, supplier warranties and the documentation to go with them. Keep them with the house records, because they answer the first questions a buyer’s lawyer asks.

Two traps catch older bathrooms. The Schedule 1 exemptions for repair and replacement don’t cover repairing or replacing a building product that has failed the Building Code’s durability provisions, so a shower rebuilt because it leaked is a question for council, not an assumption. And where earlier work went in without a consent it needed, section 96 of the Building Act 2004 lets the council issue a certificate of acceptance, but only if it’s satisfied, as far as it could ascertain, that the work complies with the Building Code. Talk to Auckland Council before you build over the top of old unconsented work.

Have you budgeted the renovation properly?

Once you have an idea of your renovation needs, set a budget that’s realistic and covers the important items in your renovation plan. Work out whether you want structural changes, new floors throughout or a smaller, minor renovation. Once you have done that, make sure you consult and get quotes from different companies so you can compare them. Do not settle for the first company you see. Be clear about your budget and stay within it.

A rough figure helps before anyone visits. You can check your budget against our bathroom renovation calculator, where you answer a few questions and we email you an Auckland price range. If you’d rather one team designed, priced and ran the whole job, here’s how we plan and build a bathroom so the spend matches the house, quoted at a fixed price before work starts.

💡 Quick tip: Finalise every product selection before demolition. Our FAQ puts a standard full bathroom at 3 to 4 weeks from the day demolition begins, assuming the design is finished and materials are ordered, and a change mid-build costs time as well as money.

Spend for the House You Have

A bathroom earns its keep twice: every morning you use it, and on the day someone else walks through it at an open home. Fix what’s failing, match the house, check what your street sells for, and the second one mostly looks after itself. Spend beyond that line for the first reason alone if you like. Just do it knowing that’s what the money is for.

Does renovating a bathroom add value to a house in NZ?

Usually, when the renovation fixes faults a buyer or inspector would mark down and matches the standard of the rest of the house. Leaks, failed waterproofing, mould and dated fixtures all reduce what buyers will pay. A bathroom finished well above the level of the house, or above what homes on your street sell for, is where the spend stops coming back. There is no reliable NZ percentage for the return, so use local sales and an agent's appraisal.

Does a new bathroom add value if the old one still works?

It depends on what working means. If the plumbing, waterproofing and ventilation are sound and the room is simply dated, a budget refresh of new paint, fittings and minor tiling may be all a buyer needs to see. If the shower has leaked or the floor is soft, the value is in fixing the cause properly, because new tiles over a failed membrane fail again.

What is overcapitalising on a bathroom renovation?

Overcapitalising means spending more on a renovation than the value it adds to the house. It happens when the bathroom is finished to a level the rest of the house and the street cannot support, so buyers will not pay for it. It is not wrong if you want the room for yourself, but you should know that is what the money is buying.

How do I know if I am overcapitalising?

Get evidence from your street before you set the budget. Look at recent sales of similar homes nearby, ask two local agents for a current market appraisal with the bathroom as it is and renovated, and for bigger plans pay a registered valuer. settled.govt.nz suggests asking your valuer or agent what they would recommend before major work. If the value gap is smaller than the spend, you are renovating for your own use.

How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Auckland?

Our published Auckland bands are $8,000 to $15,000 for a budget refresh (new paint, fittings and minor tiling), $25,000 to $35,000 for a mid-range full renovation covering design, supply, all trades and project management, and $35,000 to $65,000+ for a custom luxury bathroom with premium materials, structural changes or a wet room. Size, product choices, consent and complexity move the final figure, and we give a fixed-price quote after a free in-home consultation.

Does adding an ensuite add value to a house?

Adding an ensuite or second bathroom often matters more to buyers than upgrading the one you have, because it fixes a shortfall in how the house works, especially in a family home with three or more bedrooms and one bathroom. It still has to suit the street. An ensuite in an extension sits in our FAQ range of $3,500 to $5,000 per square metre once a bathroom is added, so check local sales first.

Do I need building consent to add an ensuite?

Check before you assume it is exempt. Schedule 1 of the Building Act 2004 exempts like-for-like replacement of sanitary plumbing in the same position, and alterations only where the number of sanitary fixtures does not increase, when an authorised plumber does the work. A new ensuite adds fixtures, so it falls outside those exemptions. Confirm your plans with Auckland Council or a Licensed Building Practitioner before you start.

Does having a bath add value to your house?

In a house with one bathroom, keeping a bath usually helps if most buyers in your suburb are families with young children, because removing the only bath narrows who the house suits. In an ensuite or second bathroom, a walk-in shower instead of a bath is one of the styles our FAQ lists as in demand in Auckland. A local agent can tell you who buys on your street.

Should I renovate my bathroom before selling?

Think carefully first. settled.govt.nz warns you may not get your money back on big jobs like modernising a bathroom before selling, and puts cleaning, repairs, fixing leaks and having consent and compliance documents in order ahead of them. If you sell within a year or two, repairs and paperwork usually beat a full renovation. If the whole house is tired, spread the budget rather than spending it all on one room.

Will a renovated bathroom change my rating valuation?

Not necessarily. settled.govt.nz notes that the rating value council uses for rates is not necessarily market value and may not reflect recent improvements, especially work that did not need consent. Many like-for-like bathroom renovations need no consent, so judge the value by what an agent or a registered valuer says, not by your next RV notice.

White Bathroom Renovation Design Ideas – Recommended by Design Experts

White bathrooms can be a beautiful canvas for your ideas. Often people associate white bathrooms with tasteless rooms that remind them of sterile hospital rooms. With a little effort these tasteless rooms can be transformed into a room of elegance.

Browse some magazines, look at some design websites or simply look at our list of ideas to transform your dated bathroom to suit your style. Our bathroom design gallery is another good place to gather ideas.

      1. Add Accessories

This is definitely the most easy and fun way to make a plain white bathroom look wonderful. Add some colourful towels, or a nice basket with rolled up towels, floor mats, long jars, toothbrush holders, nice soap dishes etc. The possibilities are endless and they are easy to switch and change around to give you a different look every few months.

      White bathroom renovation design ideas

Adding a few colourful accessories truly transform your white bathroom.

      2. Nature and Plants

Bring nature right inside your bathroom for a serene and peaceful experience. Add a nice vase of flowers on your counter top to enliven the space and give it some character. You could also put large and leafy potted plants in the corners to give your bathroom fresh and cleaning environment. Another idea could be to hang plants from the ceiling.

      3. Add a Feature wall

Create a focal point in your otherwise white bathroom with a feature wall. You could either have a lot of colourful tiles or beautiful mosaic on one side of the wall to give it a nice Moorish feel. Another idea would be have a wall embedded with pebbles, behind a shower or a bathtub to give it a truly outdoor feel. The way to preserve the integrity of your bathroom is to have everything else in shades of white except the feature wall.

      White bathroom renovation design ideas

The ‘pebble wall’ gives a dramatic effect in this otherwise white bathroom

      4. Add Warmth with shades of ‘white’

Having your entire bathroom in one shade of white can make your bathroom look sterile and cold. But if you add different shades of white to your bathroom, it will make it look elegant and warm. Also add some brass, ivory and metal to your bathroom accessories and fixtures to give it a truly luxurious feel.

      5. Add Textures

Having different textured materials in your bathroom will add depth and character to your bathroom. An example would be having a shiny white wood with a marble sink on your vanity.

      6. Add some colour

Add a splash of colour by adding some colourful paintings, towels or even replacing parts of the fixtures. An example would be to change the toilet seat to black or red or replacing your faucets and showerheads to nice brassy gold.

        Ask yourself a few questions

        • What exactly do you want?
        • Do you only want a few fixtures or all of them replaced?
        • Are your floors looking shabby and need replacing or are they staying?
        • How about the walls?
        • Is the design of your bathroom quite dated or do you like the look of your bathroom?
        • Do you want 1 bathroom renovated or do you want all of them done?
        • Do you need the layout changed to make your bathroom just a little bit more spacious?

        Research

Write your answers down in your notebook so you have clarity on what is going and what is staying. Research is always the most important aspect of any renovation. If you research is not thorough then you are most likely going be full of regrets in the future.

Read online articles, and book specific to the kind of bathroom you are renovating. Look at what other bathrooms with a similar space look like. Our bathroom designs we’ve completed can help you picture the possibilities. Go to a few shops around Auckland to see what kind of fixtures you like.

If you are after a certain look, then look around your home or other furniture shops to see if you could reuse cabinets and vanities for your bathroom. Don’t get too carried away with trends. When you research styles online or otherwise you will realise that there are certain looks that you are not fond of which will help you narrow down the look you actually want.

It is also a good idea to compare prices for the things that you do want to change in your bathroom. You might like see if you could get cheaper but high quality alternatives to premium branded fixtures. Many Auckland shops stock premium quality materials and fixtures which are in fact of better quality than their Italian counterparts.

        Plumbing

Our advice to clients is always to keep the plumbing the way it is and only changing it if absolutely necessary. Changing existing plumbing can put an astronomical strain on your budget. Try and plan your layout and design around your current plumbing to stay within your budget. Most renovation companies will give you plenty of options in term of layout and design. Also don’t forget to do your own research.

Make sure you have a clear picture about the plumbing system of your bathroom

        Professional Quotes

If you are making small changes to your bathroom then it would not be such a bad idea to make the changes on your own. However it is always best not to try and renovate your bathroom on your own based on a YouTube video. Sometimes it is best to leave certain things on the professionals.

Ring a few companies before you decide on the one you want to employ as your bathroom renovators. Don’t rush things, get a few quotes, talk to the owner of the company and make sure they have understood what you require before signing the contract. A good renovation company would typically have a free consultation; give you detailed drawings of your plan, giving you options on designs and material before asking for a deposit. We always tell our clients to talk to several companies before deciding on which company to choose.

Some people like a basic bathroom renovation, while others like all the bells and whistles they can get, turning their bathroom into a retreat from the pressures of the world. Many people would like a bathroom with more features or personality but haven’t been able to create what they want, because they do not have any idea of how to get bathroom design ideas that meet their needs.

We are going to give you some basics of bathroom renovation ideas for Auckland Homes, to start you on your way toward not just redesigning your new bathroom but perhaps leading to a complete bathroom renovation/ remodelling. For visual inspiration, browse our completed bathroom designs across Auckland.

            BATHROOM RENOVATION IDEA #1

How you use your present bathroom

The first thing you need to think about in renovating your bathroom is how you use your present bathroom, what you like about it and what its deficiencies are.

From this information you can begin to think about your ideal renovated bathroom. For instance, do you like taking baths, maybe in a whirlpool tub? Do you have enough storage space? How is the lighting in the bathroom? What about location – are your bathrooms in the right place? Do you have enough bathrooms or do you want to add one?

Start with some basic questions and begin to get some basic answers, and begin writing down what you want. From magazines and the internet compile a file or “scrapbook” of your ideal bathroom – layout, ideas for floor and wall treatments, and the type of fixtures you’d like to have.

            BATHROOM RENOVATION IDEA #2

Do you need to add a new bathroom? If so, where will you put it?

Let’s focus on some beginning steps of bathroom designs and how to create a bathroom renovation as close to your ideal.

The first thing you should do is make a scale sketch of how your bathroom is now. This will give you a good idea of how much space you have to work with as you redesign your bathroom. After you have done this you will need to determine what arrangement of items you will want in your new bathroom, then draw templates of those items to scale and see where they fit into the space you have.

            BATHROOM RENOVATION IDEA #3

Locating your fixtures in the proper order

As you get started with your bathroom design, you will want to think about locating your fixtures in the proper order.

In a full bath design, the sink is used most often, the toilet is used next most often, and the bath and/or shower are used the least. With this in mind, most bathrooms are designed with the sink nearest the door, the toilet next and then the bath or shower. So keep in mind location and accessibility in a renovated bathroom design.

            BATHROOM RENOVATION IDEA #4

Expanding the size of your bathroom

At this point it is a good idea to think about whether you want to expand the size of your bathroom.

To do this, you will either need to expand into other space adjacent or adjoining the bathroom, or even build the bathroom out, perhaps adding a bump-out to your house. Adding space by enlarging outside is going to be more costly, require more work and contractors, and is probably only doable on the ground floor. For now we’ll focus on expanding within the space you already have.

So where can you get space to expand if you want to?

Is there an adjoining closet or room that you would not mind being a little smaller, so you can take space from it to add to your new renovated bathroom? If you are below an attic or you have space in a kneewall ( a partition that forms a side wall or supports roof rafters under a pitched roof), is that space usable? Be aware that using attic or kneewall space will take some structural work.

Want a price for your bathroom renovation?
            Open the calculator →

You may even think about taking a whole adjacent room to enlarge the bathroom.

You might take half an adjoining room for the bathroom if it is available; then convert the remainder of that room into a home office or other space. For homeowners who do not have children, or whose children have grown up and left home leaving an empty room, perhaps you can use the bedroom space they have vacated for expanding the bathroom.

            BATHROOM RENOVATION IDEA #5

            Bathroom Expansions

One reason for the trend in bathroom expansion is to add a shower separate from the tub, and perhaps replace the regular bathtub previously used for both showers and baths with a large soaking, whirlpool type tub.

Often the soaking tub can be placed under an eave or into a part of the kneewall, minimizing its larger space requirement, since with a stand-alone shower the need for space to stand up in the tub is not as necessary. Make sure however, that the bathtub has enough headroom to meet building codes.

Another reason for a bathroom renovation expansion is the installation of other items in addition to stand alone showers. Many bathrooms lack storage, and an expansion can help with storage of towels, cosmetics and other bathroom necessities.

Often today people are expanding bathrooms so that they may install an additional sink to have his and her sinks so that when getting ready to go out, there is not a struggle to use a single sink. There are many new and unusual designs for sinks today, many of them not as expensive as they may look.

            Adding dressing rooms

Homeowners are now also adding dressing rooms off their bathrooms into adjoining space . A dressing room or walk-in closet off the bathroom allows them to take a shower or bath and have their clothing right at hand. Sometimes with a major remodel the walk-in closet can be entered from the bathroom and from an adjoining master bedroom.

Bathroom renovation designs are also being done to find alternate space for toilets, away from the sink, tubs and showers. Toilets are now often being placed in a separate space within the bathroom, a sub- room if you will, sometimes humorously called a throne room. This type of toilet setup can provide more privacy and allow more than one person to use the bathroom simultaneously.

            BATHROOM RENOVATION IDEA #6

            Installing a bidet

Although most often thought of as a bathroom fixture only in Europe, bidets are now beginning to be seen in more homes elsewhere in the world, adding an extra fixture adjacent to the toilet.

Bidets provide enhanced hygiene for users, and although still considered a luxury, they are showing up throughout the world. If thinking about adding a bidet, however, be aware that there may be special plumbing required (unlike toilets, bidets require both cold and hot water).

Many people are looking at large and small bathroom renovations as a way to enhance their lives, not only providing for hygiene, but creating a room that provides enhanced relaxation from today’s busy world. And extra space just makes a bathroom more usable. There are so many bathroom design ideas and themes available today, from modern to traditional to Asian design, people are looking at bathrooms as additional living space instead of merely functional living space.

5 Tips For Choosing A Bathroom Renovator in Auckland

When choosing a bathroom renovator to head up your renovation project, a few simple steps can mean the difference between complete confidence and sleepless nights.

              1. Ask for Referrals and Look for Social Proof/ Reviews

Word of mouth — hands down, it’s the best way to find a qualified professional to tackle the job.

Ask relatives, friends and neighbors whom they have had good experiences with. Also ask what made it a positive experience, how the contractor handled problems and whether he or she would use the same contractor again. Check online reviews and testimonials for the company and make sure they are unsoliciated reviews.

              2. Look at Credentials and Past Bathroom Renovations

With recommendations in hand, do some preliminary research, whether that’s with a phone call or a visit to the contractor’s website.

Find out whether he or she holds all the required licenses, as well as designations from any professional associations like the Licensed Building Practitioner. Look for contractors who have invested in coursework and passed rigorous tests in order to earn a particular certification.

              3. Interview A Few Bathroom Renovators – Not Just One

Narrow down the list of contenders, and set up meetings. What is the magic number of contractors to interview?

Ultimately, the right amount could be one but no more than three. “With too many quotes, it gets too confusing trying to make a decision.”

How a contractor answers questions is extremely important, but communication goes both ways. One of the most important things [a homeowner] can find in a designer and a builder is somebody who listens to them, One of the things that’s made Superior Renovations successful is we don’t do all the talking.

              4. Check References

Once rapport has been established, ask to see some of the contractor’s projects.

If they meet with approval, request references and then actually call the contractor’s former customers to check up on them. Ask how the contractor did at executing the project. Was it on-time and on-budget? Were they pleased with the outcome? Was there anything that could have been done differently? It’s also worth working through some bathroom design inspiration beforehand, so you can gauge the standard of finish a renovator delivers.

              5. Get it in Writing

After zeroing in on one Bathroom Renovator who seems right for the job, take a look at the documents he or she has prepared.

Do they look professional? Scrutinize the contract. Does it seem fair and balanced? Also, make sure the legal agreement includes the following:

              – a bid price and payment schedule
              – the scope of work
              – a site plan
              – a sequential schedule of primary construction tasks
              – a change-order clause
              – a written procedural list for close-out
              – an express limited warranty
              – a clause about dispute resolution
              – a waiver of lien, which would prevent subcontractors and suppliers from putting a lien on a house should their invoices go unpaid by the contractor

If everything checks out, you can sign on the dotted line with confidence.

Great work, good communication, very easy to work with. For downstairs bathroom upgrade.
We worked with Alison (kitchen design) and Neil (project management) during our kitchen renovation and had a great experience.

Communication was great, there was no 'hard sell', and the team was always available and extremely responsive. The works were completed to our satisfaction and even when things were done in a way we didn't like or was incorrect, all we had to do was point the error out and a team member was sent out immediately to rectify the issue.

The end result exceeded our expectations- all done without breaking the bank and within the timeline agreed to at the start.

We look forward to enjoying our new kitchen and are already thinking about our next project with the team from Superior renovations.
                Exceptional Kitchen Renovation Experience

We recently had our kitchen renovated by Superior Renovations on Wairau Road, and we couldn’t be happier with the entire experience and, most importantly, the finished result.

From the very first day of demolition through to the final cabinet installation, every person involved in the project was exceptional. The quality of workmanship was consistently excellent, and it was clear that everyone took pride in the work they were doing.

A special mention has to go to Neil, who managed the entire project brilliantly. The biggest thing that stood out to us was how well organised everything was. The timeline was adhered to week after week, and we always knew exactly what was happening and who would be coming each day. It made what could have been a stressful renovation feel incredibly smooth and well managed.

Alison, who helped us with the initial design, was fantastic. She came up with a wonderful design that we immediately loved, and she was always happy to take the time to answer our questions, talk through options and make sure we were comfortable with every decision.

The plumber, electrician and cabinet maker were all outstanding, and the quality of their work really shows in the finished kitchen.

The transformation from our old kitchen to the new one has been incredible, and we absolutely love our new space. The attention to detail, workmanship, communication and project management were all first class.

We would recommend Superior Renovations to anyone and everyone without hesitation. If you’re looking for a company that delivers a quality renovation, keeps to its timeline and provides excellent value for money, we would definitely recommend giving them a call.

Thank you to Neil, Alison and the entire Superior Renovations team for giving us a kitchen we absolutely love! 👏👏
We have always loved working with Superior renovations and in particular Kevin. We felt like we were getting special one-on-one treatment at all hours of the day. They always produce their work super quick and to a good standard.
We added a new bathroom and upgraded the rumpus.
Superior Renovations offered a reasonable price and delivered professional services and work.
We recommend Superior Renovations for the house renovation.
This is our final and exceptionally positive review for Superior Renovations. First and foremost, we must emphasize that they are outstanding!

Superior Renovations has completed a comprehensive renovation of our entire house, both externally and internally, including the kitchen, bathroom, painting, carpeting, electronic gate, and more. Throughout the various projects over the past few months, we have been thoroughly impressed by their work and are delighted with the results. Their expertise and service continue to amaze us; they truly listen to our needs and engage in discussions whenever they believe improvements can be made.

We extend our gratitude to Cici, who not only served as the sales manager but also as the designer, transforming our kitchen from an early 2000s style to a modern and stylish new one. Neil, our project manager, worked with us daily, attending to every detail and going the extra mile to help us achieve an excellent result.

From the very first day of collaboration, we encountered no issues whatsoever, whether in communication, design discussions, or the execution by the on-site teams. We highly recommend Superior Renovations to anyone considering home renovation. Contacting them will reveal why we are so pleased with their work on our home.

                SUPERIOR RENOVATIONS
Renovations on one full bathroom and one small ensuite at my home in Sunnynook, Auckland, were completed on 26th June 2026.
I am fully satisfied with the work done at my home by all workers and contractors and delighted with the results that I am now enjoying. All work is of a very high standard and attention to care leading to excellent results.
All staff of Superior Renovations and associated contractors were at all times helpful and happy to explain all aspects of their work and respectful in listening to any of my concerns or questions, with any changes where necessary being quickly and effectively carried out.
I have no hesitation in recommending Superior Renovations as your choice for any bathroom renovation.

In early June, I hired Superior Renovation company to thoroughly renovate our two bathrooms. The project has now been completed and we are very satisfied. Thank you sincerely, and we highly recommend it.
Despite some delays, Eunice, Neil and the team at Little Giants have done a really good job on out kitchen renovation. Great finishing and very responsive to fixing up any little thing we weren't happy with.

                Good work team!
From the very first consultation, our experience with this team has been nothing short of stellar.

Working with Eunice, our sales consultant, set a high bar for the rest of the project.
Eunice is truly exceptional at what she does. When we first began our kitchen project, we went through several versions of our floor plan, and she was with us every step of the way—from the initial planning stages right through to the final concept. Her patience and dedication during the design process were remarkable.
                Throughout the project, Eunice provided:
                * **Invaluable Suggestions:** She has a keen eye for both aesthetics and functionality, pointing out details we never would have considered on our own.
                * **Seamless Adjustments:** No matter how many tweaks we requested, she handled every change with professionalism and a "can-do" attitude.
                * **Expert Guidance:** She transformed our vague ideas into a cohesive, stunning reality.

Once the planning was complete, Neil, our project manager, took the reins and truly blew us away. Neil is a consummate professional who balances technical expertise with fantastic communication.
He kept us informed at every stage, ensuring we knew exactly what to expect and when.
Whenever a minor pivot was needed, Neil handled it with grace and efficiency, keeping the timeline on track.
His standards for the renovation work were incredibly high, ensuring the final result was polished and beautiful.

The transition from Eunice’s initial planning to Neil’s execution was flawless. If you are looking for a team that combines design expertise with top-tier project management, look no further. We are absolutely thrilled with our new kitchen and new flooring !
Superior Renovations has just finished a complete remodel of my bathroom. I can see, why the company has such a high reputation. At every stage, from sales, design, project management, and execution, the company excelled at every point. I am just so happy with the work that they have done and they have exceeded my expectations at every point.
Used Superior for a kitchen and bathroom renovation last year. They did an excellent job updating both rooms, communication was excellent ongoing tjrough the project, they coordinated all the tradies, synchronized so there was little downtime, and it all worked exactly as planned and on budget. Was really glad we chose Superior Renovations and plan to use again for our entrance way at some stage.
As I said to my work colleagues ‘I have just had the most pleasant experience’. When they realised it was with renovations at home they were shocked - ‘unheard of’ I was told.
Everything went to plan - timing, project management, costs, etc, etc. Neil communicated with me daily and made my whole bathroom renovation a pleasure.
The best decision I made was choosing Superior Renovations.
Thank you Kevin for our initial connection and for passing me on to Neil to manage the whole process.
We just finished a bathroom renovation and couldn’t be happier with the results. The craftsmanship is top-notch, and the attention to detail in the tiling and finishing is impressive. The team was professional, kept the workspace clean, and delivered exactly what we envisioned. Highly recommend them for anyone looking for a high-quality transformation.
Superior did an excellent job of renovating our ensuite. Project manager Jacob was easy to work with and communications were good.
This is our second review for Superior Renovations. They have done two projects earlier this year and we were so impressed by the work they have finished. After discussing and very careful consideration, we decided to go with more projects with them. So far, they have now completed stage 1 renovation of our house. We still amazed for their knowledge and services; they really listen to us and discuss anything with us if they feel/think could be better…
From the first day we work with them, we have no issue with them at all, from communication, discussing, designing to the teams working on the site.
Especially we are highly recommended to those who are considering doing the house renovation, please contact them and you will know why we are so pleased to have them to do our house renovation.
We are thanking Cici, Neil and the teams so much….
We are looking forward to seeing what the outcome will be.

We recently had our bathroom renovated by Superior Renovations and couldn’t be happier with the experience. Dorothy and Neil were an absolute pleasure to work with. They guided us through every step of the process, making what can be a stressful experience feel smooth and straightforward.
The quoting process was transparent and detailed, with no hidden fees or surprises. Neil was incredibly responsive and always available whenever we had questions or requests, which gave us real peace of mind throughout the project. We really love the end result and enjoy our new bathroom!
We’ll definitely be returning to the Superior Reno team for our next project. Highly recommended!
Our bathroom reno has just been completed & I am so happy. The whole process was easy & hassle free. Alison designed our bathroom & was very patient with our changes/then changes back again. Jacob our project manager was a delight to deal with. He always kept us informed of the scheduling & any other information we may have needed. All the tradies worked hard & the job was completed & signed off within 3 weeks. That's demo, full tiling, installation of new everything & delivery & pick up of the skip down a very tricky driveway. We absolutely love the new bathroom & would recommend Superior Renovations everyday. Future jobs I will definitely be contacting them again. Thank so much for your excellent work
Having explored our reno options, it was an easy decision to select Superior Renovations for our work. As first timers at anything like this we had to trust the system with grand old 100year old bungalow. We were so pleased to have Cici, Sonny and Kai working with us the whole way through. Be shout out to all the team, builders, plumbers, electricians, tilers and painters. A superb job delivered on budget and ahead of time. The communication from Cici and Sonny was first class. Would highly recommend working with Superior Renovations in fact, we already have more worked booked in. Thanks Superior you made Millie and Monty's parents very happy. 🐾
I am very happy with the recent renovation for my new kitchen.
The team worked really hard to get it done within the time frame.
The manager, Jacob, was very helpful and communicated well and always sorts out any issue immediately.
                Thank you Irene
We couldn’t be happier with our new pergola! From start to finish, the team was professional, punctual, and easy to work with. They took the time to listen to what we wanted and offered great suggestions to make the design even better. The quality of the materials and workmanship is outstanding — everything feels solid, well-built, and beautifully finished. Kudos to Sinan Sun as she has been an amazing contact with the company.
We are very pleased with our bathroom reno by Superior Renovations! Jacob, Cici and the team always kept us up to date, were always friendly to deal with and finished ahead of schedule. Most importantly we are very happy with the quality of the work.
We have been working with Superior Renovations as a supplier now for over three years. In that time we have found the team to be very professional and well organised. Which is a welcome relief in this industry! Just recently we have become their sole supplier for portaloos, which recognises the collaboration we have forged over these three years.

In particular, Leanne and Elaine set a very high standard of communication and flexibility. This is of vital importance when scheduling deliveries and pickups with us, however, they understand not everything can be done at once and are willing to work with us for the best (supplier/contractor/client) outcome.

I would imagine this ethos would flow directly through to all their contracted renovation work. A pleasure to work with!
A very reliable supplier – we’ve been working with them for three years now, and they have never let us down. Well done to the team.
We have been working with these guys for the past 4 years and find them an awesome company to work with, very efficient and organised. I highly recommend!
