3 Vintage Styles With All The Modern Amenities Of Today

Vintage styles are becoming very popular with many Aucklanders as they often bring a touch of luxury and character to homes. So how exactly can we define a Vintage style? This has often been debatable as there is no definitive answer to that. The one consistent element that all renovators agree on is that vintage styles borrow the best bits from the past. Designs that aren’t common anymore, that have a rich heritage and traditional flare attached to them.

Vintage homes of today do not lack in any modern amenity. Most designers renovate homes to make them look Vintage with all the functionality and amenities that today has to offer. This is how we define vintage styles. However, there are many different styles but for the purpose of this article, we have narrowed it down to 3 distinct and overarching styles for home interior design.

Mid-century

Mid century modern styles take the best from pinnacle times of extraordinary architecture and history. These designs often incorporate vaulted ceilings with either natural or sleek painted wood with clean lines. The emphasis was on minimal, tidy designs that emphasised the available space in the home. The bathrooms and kitchens will be top priority in mid-century homes, focusing on simplistic colour palettes with surprising and intriguing splashes of extra colour and light.

living room with vintage-style sofas rustic timber coffee table and glass stair balustrade

Home renovators in Auckland can implement this style particularly well with added features and availability of natural wooden materials. The intention is to highlight the traditional and bring it into the modern with mid-century vintage decor.

Vintage farmhouse

The emphasis with this design lies in the blending of white or off-whites to create a contrast with rustic warmer wooden coatings and materials. These combined elements are inspired by traditional farmhouses of well off families, without all the mess of course. The most important thing for home renovators to incorporate into a vintage farmhouse design is the abundance of wooden features.

The focus should be rustic farm life meets modern interior design. The wood is used to add chairs or stools or even floating shelves. The property will often include traditional furniture and cabinetry placed by the homeowners. These features are strong and durable while having the bonus of being aesthetically pleasing.

Many innovators of this particular style attempt to bring the table to the kitchen, making the kitchen the primary eating place for the family. This infusion highlights practicality and style while celebrating true craftsmanship.

Vintage industrial

This style borrows from similar inspirations as the mid-century style, heavily using architecture to increase natural space and potential. These styles often implement an exposed brick wall for the simple, stripped back look of the mid-century. This element adds a touch of traditionalism and rustic appeal to any property.

Home renovators in Auckland should consider the limitations with this particular design. Because of the necessity for exposed natural materials, this calls for lots of metals and reclaimed wood. This can be expensive and difficult to find but can be worth it in the end.

The most appealing aspect of this style is the openness it adds to the house without needed to alter the light potential. The emphasis is on making everything accessible like pots and pans, spice racks and shelves. If you prefer a more simplistic, minimalist look then this may not be the style for you.

When defining these styles, the aim for many home renovators is to understand what is popular and what will increase the value of the property. Many home renovators in Auckland opt for unique designs that stand out on the market and attract interested individuals.

The goal with each design is staying true to the original style it is borrowed from. This doesn’t mean incorporating additional elements of modern design. It simply means keeping the colours consistent and the interior design complacent with the source material.

Manufacturers nowadays now create all sorts of three-dimensional designs using basic tiles. There are lots of designs and shapes to choose from. Kitchen Renovation Trends for 2018 in Auckland

Kitchens are one of the unique rooms in our homes. Kitchens go through the most amount of wear and tear in the house. On most days, by the time you make breakfast, get the kids off to school, pack up lunch and snacks for work and prepare your famous family recipe for dinner, you’ve spent more time in the kitchen than your living room.

Kitchens have changed a lot over the decades and planning for your Kitchen renovation in Auckland is very important. Technological advances and changing social dynamics have contributed greatly to the rise of the modern kitchen. Whether you need to renovate your current layout or you simply want a new look, 2018 is the perfect time to upgrade to your dream kitchen. Here are the top 10 trends in Auckland kitchen renovations to look out for in 2018.

      1. Hardworking islands

Islands have continued to dominate the modern kitchen with many kitchen renovations in Auckland now opting for two islands. Most of these Auckland renovations now incorporate the dining into the island design. The 2018 larger kitchen islands now have storage cabinets which comes fitted with under-counter appliances and can also be used as a casual dining or bar. Some of these renovations are also extending the kitchen islands into the living room spaces in homes with large sitting rooms and open plan designs. This way, the kitchen island can be multi-functional without taking up too much space in the kitchen.

      2. Polished Countertops

Countertops cover up most of the visible areas in the kitchen. So it makes sense to renovate using eye-catching materials. If you’d like to add a restaurant-like feel to your kitchen, stainless steel counters are great for that. Granite and quartz are evergreen additions to any kitchen renovation.

      3. Open Shelves

Open shelving is becoming increasingly popular in kitchen renovations. Homeowners are able to show off their personal style by decorating with small accessories and even placing deluxe food items on the open shelves. Try rough cut wood for a natural feel or metal tubing for a more industrial attitude for your open shelving.

white shaker-style kitchen with glass-front cabinets stainless fridge and timber flooring4. The rise of ‘Smart Kitchens

Smart appliances are developing at a rapid pace and anyone considering an Auckland kitchen renovation in 2018 should really look into them. Kitchens are going automated and these appliances allow us to control our kitchens from afar. motion sensor kitchen faucets, Refrigerators that can alert you when you are running low on groceries or a coffee maker that makes you coffee before you wake up are just the tips of the iceberg when it comes to a smart kitchen. This is one of the biggest trends in the renovation of many Auckland kitchens in 2018.

      5. Standard Designs and Materials

Convenience has become a top priority for most people owing to the busy and hectic lives we all live. The aim is to have a stress free environment and not a bulky space. One of the trends lately has been to forgo the top cabinets all together. The reason for this is that they are often hard to reach and can make the area look bulky. Rather than having high polished wood, people opt for materials such as stone and steel as they are easy to clean and are more durable. In order to make your kitchen convenient yet unique, make use of different textures to suit your style.

      6. Efficient Storage Solutions

Not having adequate storage in your kitchen can cause a lot of frustration. Many storage spaces in kitchen are not structured properly for either large utensils or vice versa. When planning your kitchen renovation, keep in mind that spaces can be compartmentalised spaces to accommodate small and large appliances. Examples of these can be storage dividers for cutlery, pull out spice racks, wall hangers for pots and pans or small cups. The list for new and convenient storage solutions is endless. Make sure that you do some research and ask your renovator to take you to a few kitchen showrooms to get an idea of what is available. You can also browse our gallery of kitchen layouts and finishes for ideas before you go.

The above-mentioned trends are just a few of the many trends for Auckland kitchen renovations in 2018. Before renovating, however, make sure to explore many options and do adequate research so as to know what kind of kitchen renovation best fits your home.

Already have all your own trades and you’re comfortable managing them for your kitchen renovation?

Although we don’t recommend if you haven’t renovated a kitchen before and/or you don’t have trades people you can trust, most renovations if not all comes with it’s own surprises because not all homes are the same – this is where experience/project management plays an important role in minimises risks to maintain costs/delays giving you higher certainty of outcome/quality backed by associated guarantees and warranties.

However, if you do intend to manage the kitchen renovation yourself, it does work out more cost effective to contact a kitchen cabinetry manufacturer directly to get the kitchen cabinets designed, manufactured and installed – leaving you to manage the other trades such as flooring, demolition, painting, plastering, splashback/tiling, electrician, plumber, and sometimes a carpenter/builder.

Kitchen Renovation Checklist – Choosing The Right Renovation Company in Auckland

Choosing to remodel your kitchen is a major decision. There are a number of things to consider and hiring the right professional for the project is one of them. While it can be quite a tedious task to get the right kitchen renovator, having a kitchen renovation checklist can significantly ease the process. The following are the kitchen renovation checklists for hiring a renovator.

        Are They Local?

When doing kitchen renovations, it is important to work with a local company. This is because local contractors know exactly what’s going on in your local area. They can also complete your renovations faster as their products and workers are sourced locally.

        Experience

When renovating your kitchen, it is important to work with a renovator that has experience in kitchen renovations. This will ensure that they are better prepared for any challenges they might face in the course of the project.

        Insurance

When hiring a kitchen renovator, it is important to ask for proof of insurance. Any professional kitchen renovator should have insurance which protects him and you against any liability in case something goes wrong in the course of the project. You can check with the insurance company to make sure the insurance is valid.

        Credentials

A good renovator should have all the necessary credentials which include licenses and permits that allow them to work as a building professional in Auckland. If they do not, don’t it is not wise to hire them.

        Personally interview candidates

Get a list of potential candidates, set up a meeting with them and ask them about their previous projects. From the interview, you can determine if you want to give your project to them or not.

        Check references

When you have successfully interviewed the contractor, ask them to provide at least two references. People they have worked with in the past and can vouch for their competence. Ask for photos of completed projects and even ask to see one or two. You can also browse photos of recent kitchen designs we’ve completed across Auckland. Meet with the references they provide and ask about the contractor and if they are satisfied with the quality of work done.

        Are they professional?

Before and during the interview, check how well the contractor presents himself. How he handles his tools. The kitchen is a delicate part of the house and any contractor you hire must do a neat and good job. If it looks as if the contractor does not have proper coordination, then you can expect the same attitude towards your project.

Do they clean up after the renovation is completed?

It is important to know the clean-up policy of a contractor before hiring them. You have to find out if they would clean up every day before leaving or they would leave everything until the whole remodelling is done (leaving debris and tools lying around). Good renovation companies should tidy up each day after work and do a complete clean when the renovation is completed.

        Get everything in writing

After selecting a contractor, it important to write a contract and have it signed. The contract should include everything from the start and stop dates of the project, work hours, quote and billing procedure. Make sure the contract is thorough and well written

        Get Several Quotes

A good contractor will provide detailed quotes and expectations for your kitchen renovation. Meet several companies and get different quotes to compare what suits your interests best. This checklist will help you weed out the companies that are not suited for your project and take you in the right direction of finding the company for you.

Bathroom Renovation – Add Value vs Overcapitalising

A renovated bathroom will always add value to your property. Bathrooms and Kitchens are the two rooms in a house that people always look at when they buy a home. Hence, it comes as no surprise that most people have these two rooms as their top priority when renovating their homes.

Most home buyers do not want to put in too much work when they buy a house. They mostly want to buy a structurally good house with a good layout and up to date fixtures. A house which is too old with dated fixtures will not look appealing to a new buyer.

So we can conclude that bathroom renovations do indeed add value to a home. There is however a risk which comes with bathroom renovations. The problem occurs when people spend too much money on renovating a bathroom because they feel that the return on investment will be huge. This however is not true.

A buyer is not looking for an extravagant bathroom with the the best design. They are in fact looking for a bathroom which has good plumbing, up to date fixtures and a bathroom that complements the house. Our renovation experts have put together a few things to keep in mind when renovating so you get the best return on investment by adding value rather than over spending. Ask yourself the following questions:

When are you planning to sell the house?

This is a very good question to ask as it will determine what exactly you should be renovating in your bathroom.

If you are planning on selling your house sometime in the future then make sure that you are not renovating your bathroom based on a current trend. A ‘current trend’ could go out of fashion and hence make your bathroom feel dated in the future. Keep the renovation simple by using good quality products, having a good plumbing system, a good layout, and trend neutral fixtures.

If you are planning on selling the house sometime soon then make sure your bathroom renovation plan is in sync with the rest of the house when the sale occurs. If your house is old and in need of some refurbishment then there is no point just renovating the bathroom. The renovated bathroom will not add value to such a property. The better thing to do would be to spread out your budget and refurbish all the important things around the house rather than spending all your money on your bathroom.

Bathroom Renovation Add Value to a home

Renovated Bathrooms can add value to your property when it comes to putting your house on the market

Does the style of your bathroom match the the rest of the house?

Your bathroom does not have to exactly match the rest of your house in terms of style. Most people have bathrooms that are versatile when it comes to style.

They more or less have the same feel as the rest of the house. The problem occurs when a bathroom is polar opposite from the rest of the house. An example would be an ultra modern sleek bathroom in a contemporary or a country styled home. Our gallery of bathroom designs we’ve built shows styles that sit comfortably within an Auckland home.

          Size of your bathroom

The type of tile you use in your bathroom depends largely on the size of your bathroom

Have you budgeted the renovation properly?

Once you have an idea as to your renovation needs, make a budget that is realistic and accommodates the important things on your renovation plan.

Work out whether you want to make structural changes, change all the floors or carry out small and minor renovations. Once you have done that then make sure you consult and get quotes from different companies in order to compare them. Do not settle for the first company that you see. Be clear about your budget and stay within it.

White bathrooms can be a beautiful canvas for your ideas. Often people associate white bathrooms with tasteless rooms that remind them of sterile hospital rooms. With a little effort these tasteless rooms can be transformed into a room of elegance.

Browse some magazines, look at some design websites or simply look at our list of ideas to transform your dated bathroom to suit your style. Our bathroom design gallery is another good place to gather ideas.

            1. Add Accessories

This is definitely the most easy and fun way to make a plain white bathroom look wonderful. Add some colourful towels, or a nice basket with rolled up towels, floor mats, long jars, toothbrush holders, nice soap dishes etc. The possibilities are endless and they are easy to switch and change around to give you a different look every few months.

            White bathroom renovation design ideas

Adding a few colourful accessories truly transform your white bathroom.

            2. Nature and Plants

Bring nature right inside your bathroom for a serene and peaceful experience. Add a nice vase of flowers on your counter top to enliven the space and give it some character. You could also put large and leafy potted plants in the corners to give your bathroom fresh and cleaning environment. Another idea could be to hang plants from the ceiling.

            3. Add a Feature wall

Create a focal point in your otherwise white bathroom with a feature wall. You could either have a lot of colourful tiles or beautiful mosaic on one side of the wall to give it a nice Moorish feel. Another idea would be have a wall embedded with pebbles, behind a shower or a bathtub to give it a truly outdoor feel. The way to preserve the integrity of your bathroom is to have everything else in shades of white except the feature wall.

The ‘pebble wall’ gives a dramatic effect in this otherwise white bathroom

            4. Add Warmth with shades of ‘white’

Having your entire bathroom in one shade of white can make your bathroom look sterile and cold. But if you add different shades of white to your bathroom, it will make it look elegant and warm. Also add some brass, ivory and metal to your bathroom accessories and fixtures to give it a truly luxurious feel.

            5. Add Textures

Having different textured materials in your bathroom will add depth and character to your bathroom. An example would be having a shiny white wood with a marble sink on your vanity.

            6. Add some colour

Add a splash of colour by adding some colourful paintings, towels or even replacing parts of the fixtures. An example would be to change the toilet seat to black or red or replacing your faucets and showerheads to nice brassy gold.

              Ask yourself a few questions

              • What exactly do you want?
              • Do you only want a few fixtures or all of them replaced?
              • Are your floors looking shabby and need replacing or are they staying?
              • How about the walls?
              • Is the design of your bathroom quite dated or do you like the look of your bathroom?
              • Do you want 1 bathroom renovated or do you want all of them done?
              • Do you need the layout changed to make your bathroom just a little bit more spacious?

              Bathroom Renovation plan

              Research

Write your answers down in your notebook so you have clarity on what is going and what is staying. Research is always the most important aspect of any renovation. If you research is not thorough then you are most likely going be full of regrets in the future.

Read online articles, and book specific to the kind of bathroom you are renovating. Look at what other bathrooms with a similar space look like. Our bathroom designs we’ve completed can help you picture the possibilities. Go to a few shops around Auckland to see what kind of fixtures you like.

If you are after a certain look, then look around your home or other furniture shops to see if you could reuse cabinets and vanities for your bathroom. Don’t get too carried away with trends. When you research styles online or otherwise you will realise that there are certain looks that you are not fond of which will help you narrow down the look you actually want.

It is also a good idea to compare prices for the things that you do want to change in your bathroom. You might like see if you could get cheaper but high quality alternatives to premium branded fixtures. Many Auckland shops stock premium quality materials and fixtures which are in fact of better quality than their Italian counterparts.

              Plumbing

Our advice to clients is always to keep the plumbing the way it is and only changing it if absolutely necessary. Changing existing plumbing can put an astronomical strain on your budget. Try and plan your layout and design around your current plumbing to stay within your budget. Most renovation companies will give you plenty of options in term of layout and design. Also don’t forget to do your own research.

Make sure you have a clear picture about the plumbing system of your bathroom

              Professional Quotes

If you are making small changes to your bathroom then it would not be such a bad idea to make the changes on your own. However it is always best not to try and renovate your bathroom on your own based on a YouTube video. Sometimes it is best to leave certain things on the professionals.

Ring a few companies before you decide on the one you want to employ as your bathroom renovators. Don’t rush things, get a few quotes, talk to the owner of the company and make sure they have understood what you require before signing the contract. A good renovation company would typically have a free consultation; give you detailed drawings of your plan, giving you options on designs and material before asking for a deposit. We always tell our clients to talk to several companies before deciding on which company to choose.

Some people like a basic bathroom renovation, while others like all the bells and whistles they can get, turning their bathroom into a retreat from the pressures of the world. Many people would like a bathroom with more features or personality but haven’t been able to create what they want, because they do not have any idea of how to get bathroom design ideas that meet their needs.

We are going to give you some basics of bathroom renovation ideas for Auckland Homes, to start you on your way toward not just redesigning your new bathroom but perhaps leading to a complete bathroom renovation/ remodelling. For visual inspiration, browse our completed bathroom designs across Auckland.

                  BATHROOM RENOVATION IDEA #1

How you use your present bathroom

The first thing you need to think about in renovating your bathroom is how you use your present bathroom, what you like about it and what its deficiencies are.

From this information you can begin to think about your ideal renovated bathroom. For instance, do you like taking baths, maybe in a whirlpool tub? Do you have enough storage space? How is the lighting in the bathroom? What about location – are your bathrooms in the right place? Do you have enough bathrooms or do you want to add one?

Start with some basic questions and begin to get some basic answers, and begin writing down what you want. From magazines and the internet compile a file or “scrapbook” of your ideal bathroom – layout, ideas for floor and wall treatments, and the type of fixtures you’d like to have.

                  BATHROOM RENOVATION IDEA #2

Do you need to add a new bathroom? If so, where will you put it?

Let’s focus on some beginning steps of bathroom designs and how to create a bathroom renovation as close to your ideal.

The first thing you should do is make a scale sketch of how your bathroom is now. This will give you a good idea of how much space you have to work with as you redesign your bathroom. After you have done this you will need to determine what arrangement of items you will want in your new bathroom, then draw templates of those items to scale and see where they fit into the space you have.

                  BATHROOM RENOVATION IDEA #3

Locating your fixtures in the proper order

As you get started with your bathroom design, you will want to think about locating your fixtures in the proper order.

In a full bath design, the sink is used most often, the toilet is used next most often, and the bath and/or shower are used the least. With this in mind, most bathrooms are designed with the sink nearest the door, the toilet next and then the bath or shower. So keep in mind location and accessibility in a renovated bathroom design.

                  BATHROOM RENOVATION IDEA #4

Expanding the size of your bathroom

At this point it is a good idea to think about whether you want to expand the size of your bathroom.

To do this, you will either need to expand into other space adjacent or adjoining the bathroom, or even build the bathroom out, perhaps adding a bump-out to your house. Adding space by enlarging outside is going to be more costly, require more work and contractors, and is probably only doable on the ground floor. For now we’ll focus on expanding within the space you already have.

So where can you get space to expand if you want to?

Is there an adjoining closet or room that you would not mind being a little smaller, so you can take space from it to add to your new renovated bathroom? If you are below an attic or you have space in a kneewall ( a partition that forms a side wall or supports roof rafters under a pitched roof), is that space usable? Be aware that using attic or kneewall space will take some structural work.

Want a price for your bathroom renovation?
                  Open the calculator →

You may even think about taking a whole adjacent room to enlarge the bathroom.

You might take half an adjoining room for the bathroom if it is available; then convert the remainder of that room into a home office or other space. For homeowners who do not have children, or whose children have grown up and left home leaving an empty room, perhaps you can use the bedroom space they have vacated for expanding the bathroom.

                  BATHROOM RENOVATION IDEA #5

                  Bathroom Expansions

One reason for the trend in bathroom expansion is to add a shower separate from the tub, and perhaps replace the regular bathtub previously used for both showers and baths with a large soaking, whirlpool type tub.

Often the soaking tub can be placed under an eave or into a part of the kneewall, minimizing its larger space requirement, since with a stand-alone shower the need for space to stand up in the tub is not as necessary. Make sure however, that the bathtub has enough headroom to meet building codes.

Another reason for a bathroom renovation expansion is the installation of other items in addition to stand alone showers. Many bathrooms lack storage, and an expansion can help with storage of towels, cosmetics and other bathroom necessities.

Often today people are expanding bathrooms so that they may install an additional sink to have his and her sinks so that when getting ready to go out, there is not a struggle to use a single sink. There are many new and unusual designs for sinks today, many of them not as expensive as they may look.

                  Adding dressing rooms

Homeowners are now also adding dressing rooms off their bathrooms into adjoining space . A dressing room or walk-in closet off the bathroom allows them to take a shower or bath and have their clothing right at hand. Sometimes with a major remodel the walk-in closet can be entered from the bathroom and from an adjoining master bedroom.

Bathroom renovation designs are also being done to find alternate space for toilets, away from the sink, tubs and showers. Toilets are now often being placed in a separate space within the bathroom, a sub- room if you will, sometimes humorously called a throne room. This type of toilet setup can provide more privacy and allow more than one person to use the bathroom simultaneously.

                  BATHROOM RENOVATION IDEA #6

                  Installing a bidet

Although most often thought of as a bathroom fixture only in Europe, bidets are now beginning to be seen in more homes elsewhere in the world, adding an extra fixture adjacent to the toilet.

Bidets provide enhanced hygiene for users, and although still considered a luxury, they are showing up throughout the world. If thinking about adding a bidet, however, be aware that there may be special plumbing required (unlike toilets, bidets require both cold and hot water).

Many people are looking at large and small bathroom renovations as a way to enhance their lives, not only providing for hygiene, but creating a room that provides enhanced relaxation from today’s busy world. And extra space just makes a bathroom more usable. There are so many bathroom design ideas and themes available today, from modern to traditional to Asian design, people are looking at bathrooms as additional living space instead of merely functional living space.

Kitchen Countertop Options To Consider While Renovating in NZ

Seven years ago when I was choosing countertops for our own kitchen for our Auckland based home, I exhausted myself researching all the choices that were on the market and finally settled on a marble countertop + wood on the island combo. I’ve never regretted it, But seven years have passed and much has changed in the world of kitchen countertops.

We have other kinds of countertops in our home, white laminate in the laundry room, wood in the hall bathroom, and modern cultured marble in the master bathroom. All have performed well based on our expectations. Innovation is inevitable, trends come and go, so the decision as to which countertop to choose in a kitchen remodel requires much consideration. Let’s start with a classic favorite.

                    Marble Style Kitchen Countertop

Marble will never go out of style so for the price you pay, you do get the “timeless” label with the investment.

Always elegant, it complements both Old World and modern kitchens equally; for bakers it’s a favorite, no surface is better for pies and pastries.

Properly sealed marble cleans up easily with a mild cleanser and cloth. Marble can stain so it must be sealed, and since it’s softer than granite, it can chip easily (we’ve suffered several small chips around our kitchen sink).

Any acidic food like citrus can etch the surface or leave white stains. There are two varieties of gray and white Italian marble that are similar in appearance, both milky white with gray veining, and they are Carrara and Calacatta. Carrara has more delicate, lighter veining; Calacatta is a rarer, pricier stone and has bolder more defined strokes, yet both are a desirable luxury stone. Calacatta Gold and Crema Marfil marbles have brown or gold veins and offer homeowners warmer tones.

                    Marble Counter top

Marble stone is formed from limestone, superheated to form its unique crystalline structure. Marble countertop surfaces are timeless with their classic beauty and elegance. If you are looking for a surface to sustain through the ages, this natural stone countertop material is perfect for you. Its naturally cool temperature is pleasing for cooking as well as keeping any workspaces temperature controlled.

                    Wooden Style Kitchen Countertop

Wood countertops are having a moment in the spotlight right now with butcher block being so affordable

Wood countertops are higher maintenance than stone, they require sealing with various natural products like beeswax or mineral oil, or waterproof varnishes.

Wood countertops cannot withstand heat which requires the consistent use of hot pads or trivets. Water spills or rings can leave permanent marks if moisture is left too long, but they have classic appeal and add a warmth that no other countertop can compete with, especially in traditional, craftsman, or cottage style homes. The use of wood in any space brings character to your home and when cared for properly, wood countertops will remain useful and beautiful for years.

                    Wood countertop

                    Wooden Counter top

Real wood kitchen countertops are an old-world idea that is back in vogue. And as homeowners pore over options in kitchen design in the constantly changing world of styles, more and more are turning to unique, out-of-the-box ideas. If you want to see how these materials come together, browse kitchen designs we’ve built for Auckland homes. Wood countertops also have a place in the green-building movement, since many kinds of wood are fully renewable and are often gathered from recycled sources.

                    Engineered Quartz Style Kitchen Countertop

Quartz kitchen countertops are manufactured man-made surfaces with contemporary appeal created from pigmented resin and ground quartz chips.

They are readily available in multiple colors and in either honed or polished sheens. Quartz countertops share the durability of stone but are easier to care for since they are non-porous and anti-bacterial.For the most part, you won’t find the natural variegation that you do in granite or marble products yet some natural quartz manufacturers like Cambria are mimicking them well.

                    Quartz Countertop

                    Quartz Counter top

Engineered quartz (not to be confused with Quartzite, another appealing natural stone used as counters) is a manmade product created mostly from natural materials. It’s made of 90 to 94 percent ground quartz and 6 to 10 percent resins and pigments that are combined into durable and nonporous slabs. The strength of quartz, even in a manufactured form, makes it naturally resistant to abrasion, scratches, dents, and even acids without the need for sealants. And the environmental impact of manufactured quartz is low: Quartz is an abundant material and the finished product is nontoxic and nonallergenic, and will last a lifetime, reducing the need for replacement.

                    Granite Style Kitchen Countertop

Granite has been the countertop of choice for many contractors and homeowners since the 1990s.

Many granites have a speckled or mottled surface with varied colors throughout but they are extremely durable. Although porous, when sealed granite resists stains, withstands heat, and is waterproof, hence the popularity.

                    Granite countertop

                    Granite Counter top

There are plenty of reasons to go with granite countertops for your kitchen if you are updating you’re renovating. It is a natural stone that is both heat and scratch resistant. To make it even more durable, sealing the material will also prevent staining while helping to keep the surface bacteria free along with regular cleanings. Granite also comes in lots of beautiful colors and patterns―some options even resemble marble, which typically costs more per square foot. Whether your style is traditional or modern, there is a granite countertop out there that will suit your cooking space.

Solid Surface (Corian) Style Kitchen Countertop

Solid surface countertops like Corian are artificial, made of acrylic and polyester; they are non-porous so sealing is not required.

They can scratch or burn under extreme conditions but any mistakes can be sanded out so they are virtually maintenance free.

                    Solid Surface countertop

                    Solid Surface (Corian) Counter top

Corian is DuPont’s brand name for its flagship solid surface countertop material. It is a man-made product composed of 33 percent binding resins and 66 percent minerals. Corian was the original solid surface brand name. First developed by DuPont in 1967, solid surface countertops are now made by several other manufacturers and include the brands Avonite, Staron, and Mystera.

                    Limestone Kitchen Countertop

Limestone is made of calcite and is shaped from sand and aquatic life (and fossils) over time.

It’s softer than granite, yet heat resistant and moisture proof when sealed. Limestone is available in off white to sand tones and shows a beautiful patina with age. Limestone is often honed and because it is softer porous stone it can scratch easily and requires sealing.

                    Limestone Countertop

                    Limestone Counter top

Limestone in our opionion is the most beautiful stone that exists in the world. It is not only incredibly elegant, it also tames bold colors that you might have as a part of your interior design, while also fitting into more minimalist designs as well. The thing about limestone is that no matter what the rest of the room looks like, limestone is always going to fit. Because limestone always fits, it’s one of the most popular stones in the world. You can’t match the beauty of limestone, making it an incredibly elegant choice of natural stone that will easily fit into the aesthetic of any room you have take on the task.

                    Soapstone Kitchen Countertop

Like concrete (see below) soapstone is growing in popularity as a kitchen countertop material of choice.

When installed it’s often a medium gray tone that deepens over time to a more charcoal color. It’s composed of mineral talc and some slabs can have a green tint, the material is often used in labs because it is heat and chemical resistant. Soapstone is a softer surface like marble; it requires polishing to avoid cracks and can scratch or nick but it is water resistant.

                    Soapstone countertop

                    Soapstone Counter top

When it comes to natural stone countertops, there are more options out there than just marble and granite. If you love the dark beauty of granite and the light veining of marble, consider soapstone instead. It’s durable, relatively low-maintenance, and has a lovely, old-world feel. Here’s everything you need to know. Why choose Soapstone for your kitchen bench?

                    • Soapstone does not stain.
                    • Soapstone counters are not harmed by hot pots, citrus, wine, acids or chemicals.
                    • The only maintenance recommended, not required, is the mineral oil treatment to enhance the natural darkening process the stone goes through and to ensure the soapstone darkens evenly. Mineral oil is not recommended to protect the soapstone, it does not need protection since it is naturally non- porous.
                    • The cost of soapstone is comparable to other natural stones.
                    • Soapstone can be offered in a variety of different textures, unlike most other natural stones that are only available with a high polished finish. Some clients like the stone to feel rougher to the touch, others like it a little smoother and some like it in between, we can please all tastes by re-finishing the top of the slabs, at no additional cost.

Soapstone countertops are harvested from the earth and simply custom cut to fit your kitchen. It’s all-natural and can be recycled completely. No sealers or toxic chemicals of any kind will be introduced into your home. Nothing needs to be done to make soapstone beautiful since nature has taken care of this all on its own. Once it has been quarried from the earth it simply needs a cleanup and a trimming before it arrives at your door in its natural state.

                    Modern Laminates Kitchen Countertop

Laminates are manufactured with a blend of resins and paper fused to particle board and they have been a budget smooth countertop surface for decades.

In the past, laminate hasn’t always had a reputation as stylish, but that’s all changed, there are several reasons to choose laminate countertops as the newest designs mimic marble, granite, and limestone.

In the past, laminate countertops required an over mount sink but as one reader pointed out (see comments), that’s not the case anymore.

Our personal favourite is the Formica® brand

There are other companies that make laminate—but Formica was the original, and the first of its kind. They’ve been in business since 1913, and that is a testament to their quality craftsmanship and customer service. Over time, the Formica brand has become interchangeable with the word “laminate”.

Formica laminate is an affordable way to reinvent your kitchen countertop. With over 200 colors and styles to choose from, there is a Formica option for every visual palette. Their designers stay on top of the industry trends and regularly add stylish new options to the collection.

                    Concrete Kitchen Countertop

This style is trending in the past few years and for good reason. Concrete is practically indestructible and is both heat and scratch resistant.

These countertops are either precast based on a template or poured on site, the labor intensity adds to the price per square foot which is often $100 or more, but look how fabulous they can be!

Pro: Concrete is durable. The strength of the cement-and-sand mix alone has some hailing it as a rock solid (we had to) design choice. After all, concrete is made up of the same material found in sidewalks.

Con: But it can crack. Does the thought of a hairline fracture make you cringe? That’s a risk that comes along with concrete countertops, most commonly when poured in place rather than pre-cast. Of course, you can prevent cracks to a certain extent by adding fiber reinforcement, rebar, and/or wire mesh. Still, cracks happen, whether because of pressure or the natural settling of the house.

Most affordable countertop option for Kitchens in Auckland

Here are our five recommended best budget kitchen countertop options.

                    1. Quartz
                    2. Granite
                    3. Laminate
                    4. Ceramic Tile
                    5. Concrete

There are so many other countertop products coming to market in recent years, how can anyone keep up !? Zinc, recycled glass, stainless steel, the list goes on. What solid surface countertop(s) do you have in your kitchen? Are you pleased or displeased with yours?

Despite some delays, Eunice, Neil and the team at Little Giants have done a really good job on out kitchen renovation. Great finishing and very responsive to fixing up any little thing we weren't happy with.

                      Good work team!
From the very first consultation, our experience with this team has been nothing short of stellar.

Working with Eunice, our sales consultant, set a high bar for the rest of the project.
Eunice is truly exceptional at what she does. When we first began our kitchen project, we went through several versions of our floor plan, and she was with us every step of the way—from the initial planning stages right through to the final concept. Her patience and dedication during the design process were remarkable.
                      Throughout the project, Eunice provided:
                      * **Invaluable Suggestions:** She has a keen eye for both aesthetics and functionality, pointing out details we never would have considered on our own.
                      * **Seamless Adjustments:** No matter how many tweaks we requested, she handled every change with professionalism and a "can-do" attitude.
                      * **Expert Guidance:** She transformed our vague ideas into a cohesive, stunning reality.

Once the planning was complete, Neil, our project manager, took the reins and truly blew us away. Neil is a consummate professional who balances technical expertise with fantastic communication.
He kept us informed at every stage, ensuring we knew exactly what to expect and when.
Whenever a minor pivot was needed, Neil handled it with grace and efficiency, keeping the timeline on track.
His standards for the renovation work were incredibly high, ensuring the final result was polished and beautiful.

The transition from Eunice’s initial planning to Neil’s execution was flawless. If you are looking for a team that combines design expertise with top-tier project management, look no further. We are absolutely thrilled with our new kitchen and new flooring !
Superior Renovations has just finished a complete remodel of my bathroom. I can see, why the company has such a high reputation. At every stage, from sales, design, project management, and execution, the company excelled at every point. I am just so happy with the work that they have done and they have exceeded my expectations at every point.
Used Superior for a kitchen and bathroom renovation last year. They did an excellent job updating both rooms, communication was excellent ongoing tjrough the project, they coordinated all the tradies, synchronized so there was little downtime, and it all worked exactly as planned and on budget. Was really glad we chose Superior Renovations and plan to use again for our entrance way at some stage.
As I said to my work colleagues ‘I have just had the most pleasant experience’. When they realised it was with renovations at home they were shocked - ‘unheard of’ I was told.
Everything went to plan - timing, project management, costs, etc, etc. Neil communicated with me daily and made my whole bathroom renovation a pleasure.
The best decision I made was choosing Superior Renovations.
Thank you Kevin for our initial connection and for passing me on to Neil to manage the whole process.
We just finished a bathroom renovation and couldn’t be happier with the results. The craftsmanship is top-notch, and the attention to detail in the tiling and finishing is impressive. The team was professional, kept the workspace clean, and delivered exactly what we envisioned. Highly recommend them for anyone looking for a high-quality transformation.
Superior did an excellent job of renovating our ensuite. Project manager Jacob was easy to work with and communications were good.
This is our second review for Superior Renovations. They have done two projects earlier this year and we were so impressed by the work they have finished. After discussing and very careful consideration, we decided to go with more projects with them. So far, they have now completed stage 1 renovation of our house. We still amazed for their knowledge and services; they really listen to us and discuss anything with us if they feel/think could be better…
From the first day we work with them, we have no issue with them at all, from communication, discussing, designing to the teams working on the site.
Especially we are highly recommended to those who are considering doing the house renovation, please contact them and you will know why we are so pleased to have them to do our house renovation.
We are thanking Cici, Neil and the teams so much….
We are looking forward to seeing what the outcome will be.

We recently had our bathroom renovated by Superior Renovations and couldn’t be happier with the experience. Dorothy and Neil were an absolute pleasure to work with. They guided us through every step of the process, making what can be a stressful experience feel smooth and straightforward.
The quoting process was transparent and detailed, with no hidden fees or surprises. Neil was incredibly responsive and always available whenever we had questions or requests, which gave us real peace of mind throughout the project. We really love the end result and enjoy our new bathroom!
We’ll definitely be returning to the Superior Reno team for our next project. Highly recommended!
Our bathroom reno has just been completed & I am so happy. The whole process was easy & hassle free. Alison designed our bathroom & was very patient with our changes/then changes back again. Jacob our project manager was a delight to deal with. He always kept us informed of the scheduling & any other information we may have needed. All the tradies worked hard & the job was completed & signed off within 3 weeks. That's demo, full tiling, installation of new everything & delivery & pick up of the skip down a very tricky driveway. We absolutely love the new bathroom & would recommend Superior Renovations everyday. Future jobs I will definitely be contacting them again. Thank so much for your excellent work
Having explored our reno options, it was an easy decision to select Superior Renovations for our work. As first timers at anything like this we had to trust the system with grand old 100year old bungalow. We were so pleased to have Cici, Sonny and Kai working with us the whole way through. Be shout out to all the team, builders, plumbers, electricians, tilers and painters. A superb job delivered on budget and ahead of time. The communication from Cici and Sonny was first class. Would highly recommend working with Superior Renovations in fact, we already have more worked booked in. Thanks Superior you made Millie and Monty's parents very happy. 🐾
I am very happy with the recent renovation for my new kitchen.
The team worked really hard to get it done within the time frame.
The manager, Jacob, was very helpful and communicated well and always sorts out any issue immediately.
                      Thank you Irene
We couldn’t be happier with our new pergola! From start to finish, the team was professional, punctual, and easy to work with. They took the time to listen to what we wanted and offered great suggestions to make the design even better. The quality of the materials and workmanship is outstanding — everything feels solid, well-built, and beautifully finished. Kudos to Sinan Sun as she has been an amazing contact with the company.
We are very pleased with our bathroom reno by Superior Renovations! Jacob, Cici and the team always kept us up to date, were always friendly to deal with and finished ahead of schedule. Most importantly we are very happy with the quality of the work.
We have been working with Superior Renovations as a supplier now for over three years. In that time we have found the team to be very professional and well organised. Which is a welcome relief in this industry! Just recently we have become their sole supplier for portaloos, which recognises the collaboration we have forged over these three years.

In particular, Leanne and Elaine set a very high standard of communication and flexibility. This is of vital importance when scheduling deliveries and pickups with us, however, they understand not everything can be done at once and are willing to work with us for the best (supplier/contractor/client) outcome.

I would imagine this ethos would flow directly through to all their contracted renovation work. A pleasure to work with!
A very reliable supplier – we’ve been working with them for three years now, and they have never let us down. Well done to the team.
We have been working with these guys for the past 4 years and find them an awesome company to work with, very efficient and organised. I highly recommend!
Finding someone reliable for renovations has always been the most stressful thing for us. In the past, we had several painful renovation experiences—money was spent but the problems were never truly solved, and things often ended up worse than before. We really didn’t know where to find a trustworthy renovation company.

For more than ten years, our wish had been to renovate our bathroom, laundry, and toilet, so that we could finally enjoy a comfortable and functional living environment. Just when we were about to give up, we came across Superior Renovations online. We quickly made an appointment with Cici, who designed and provided us with a quote.

Throughout the whole process, I was deeply impressed by the professionalism of Superior Renovations. What stood out most was that they always delivered on their promises—everything agreed upon was completed on time. This built a relationship of trust and reliability. Up until completion, I was completely satisfied with their dedication and the quality of their workmanship.

During the renovation, we encountered some of the challenges that often come with older houses, but Cici and her team helped us resolve the discomforts we had been living with for years. We are truly grateful to the construction team.

Some say renovations are easy if you just have money, but I believe the most important thing is finding a trustworthy team that keeps their word, values quality, and cares about the customer’s experience.

Because of this renovation experience, we can now confidently plan our next project—the kitchen—and Superior Renovations will definitely be our first choice. We strongly recommend them.

Finally, I want to thank Cici and the team for helping us fulfill our dream.

Sinan is a very good consultant. She helps a lot during renovation. Very satisfied with their job.
It was great to have Alison's recommendations and input on how & what would look best for our kitchen and bathroom reno. Jacob, our project manager, has been a star too; ensuring that the project was delivered as planned, AND giving us great ideas & suggestions along the way.

We will definitely be calling on you guys again for our next home reno. Thanks team!
