Kitchen Renovation Cost NZ 2026: $10,000-$100,00+ Guide

This blog has added content to reflect costs as well as trends for the year 2026.

  • Quick 2026 Answer: Kitchen Renovation Costs in Auckland

    • Mid-range full renovation (custom cabinets, stone benchtops, appliances, minor layout tweaks for 10–12m² kitchen): $30,000–$50,000 NZD + GST (Auckland premium due to higher labour/demand; national mid-range often $25,000–$40,000).
    • Budget/basic refresh (pre-made cabinets, laminate tops, no major changes): $15,000–$25,000 + GST.
    • Luxury/custom (premium materials, islands, smart features, full layout changes): $90,000–$138,000+ + GST.
    • Auckland averages 10–20% higher than national due to labour ($120–$150/hour) and compliance.
    • Per m² estimate: $2,500–$4,000 (based on project scope). These are realistic ranges from completed Auckland projects (e.g., Greenlane small $22,000, Avondale modern $95,000). Include 10–15% contingency for surprises. Always get a free site quote—costs vary by size, materials, and suburb access.

Official NZ Construction Cost Trends (Stats NZ, February 2026)

  • Residential construction prices rose 0.6% in the March 2025 quarter and were flat/slightly up in subsequent quarters (Stats NZ Value of Building Work Put in Place series).
  • Annual residential construction price increases were around 1.9% in the 12 months to early 2025, with softer growth continuing into 2026 due to easing supply issues (Stats NZ).
  • Broader trends: Construction input prices rose post-2020 but moderated by 2025 (MBIE Building and Construction Sector Trends).
  • Residential output prices increased faster than general CPI in recent years (Stats NZ Producer Price Index). These indicate modest upward pressure on Auckland kitchen renos—factor in 10–15% contingency, especially for plumbing/electrical in older villas (e.g., Mt Eden, Remuera).

If you’re staring at your outdated kitchen in a Grey Lynn villa or trying to make the most of a busy family hub in Albany, you’re probably wondering what a proper renovation actually costs in 2026. For most Auckland homeowners, a solid mid-range job lands between $30,000–$50,000 — higher than the national average of around $29,000 + GST. Basic refreshes start from $15,000–$25,000; premium custom work runs $90,000–$138,000+. The variables are size, materials, and whether you’re touching the layout — moving plumbing in an older Auckland home adds cost fast.

What’s a Realistic Kitchen Reno Cost in Auckland This Year?

For a typical 10–12m² kitchen, a mid-range overhaul — custom cabinets, stone benchtops, decent appliances — lands between $32,000–$45,000. Smaller kitchens around 9m² can come in at $20,000–$30,000. We completed a Greenlane project at $22,000 using clever storage and neutral tones. Go larger (18–19m²) or premium and you’re looking at $85,000–$95,000+ — a rustic Stanmore Bay kitchen came in at $85,000, a modern Avondale one at $95,000. Per square metre, budget $2,500–$4,000 in Auckland. Labour runs $120–$150/hour and typically accounts for 40–50% of the total. Add consents if you’re shifting walls: $2,500–$6,500 through Auckland Council.

What Drives the Price Up or Down?

Keeping the existing layout saves $2,000–$10,000 on plumbing and electrical — particularly relevant in older Mt Eden or Remuera homes where the pipes often need attention once opened up. Premium stone benchtops ($500–$1,200/m²) versus laminate ($200–$500) adds thousands, as does custom cabinetry ($10,000–$20,000+) over pre-made. Appliances swing $2,000–$30,000 depending on specification — Energy Star models cost more upfront but reduce ongoing bills. Auckland is pricier than Christchurch (where mid-range sits at $25,000–$35,000) due to demand and transport. Add 10–15% contingency for surprises including water damage in older homes, and consider locally made materials to reduce import costs.

How Do You Get Good Value and a Decent ROI?

Prioritise materials that suit Auckland’s humidity — matte finishes, pull-out storage, and quality lighting that holds up over time. A well-executed renovation can recoup 50–80% of its cost in added value — potentially $15,000–$100,000 depending on the work. Mid-range renovations tend to perform well without overcapitalising. As a rule, keep renovation spend under 10–15% of your property’s total value.

This guide covers the full picture — cabinet refinishing to designer fees, financing options, common mistakes, and what actually drives costs up or down. Updated for 2026.

The average cost of renovating a kitchen in New Zealand with a renovation company sits between $26,000 and $35,000. Costs vary considerably depending on who you use and how much you take on yourself. DIY saves money but carries real risk without trade experience. Your reason for renovating is one of the main factors that shapes the right budget.

Renovating to sell? Stick to mid-range materials and avoid over-customising — you want broad appeal, not a kitchen that suits your specific taste. Renovating to stay and enjoy the space? Spend on quality products that will hold up and remain enjoyable for years rather than just looking good in a listing photo.

This guide covers every factor that contributes to kitchen renovation cost in New Zealand — whether you’re managing trades yourself or commissioning a full-service luxury renovation.

1. What is the Average Cost of a Renovated Kitchen in New Zealand in 2026?

The average cost of a kitchen renovation in NZ in 2026 is approximately $28,908 + GST — but that number covers a wide range of projects and tells you relatively little on its own. A standard remodel typically lands between $25,664 and $31,256, while a premium kitchen with high-end finishes can run anywhere from $40,000 to $173,880+. Here’s how the cost spectrum breaks down.

Average Kitchen Renovation Cost NZ: A Snapshot

A quick reference across the cost range:

Cost Category Minimum Cost Average Cost Maximum Cost
Range $16,832 + GST $28,908 + GST $173,880 + GST
Typical Budget Range $25,664 – $31,256

These figures reflect a mix of basic updates and full remodels. The main variables are cabinetry, appliances, benchtops, flooring, labour, and whether the layout changes.

What Drives Kitchen Renovation Costs in NZ?

Understanding what costs the most helps you decide where to spend and where to pull back:

  1. Cabinets and Benchtops
    • Basic option: Pre-made cabinets and laminate benchtops ($5,000–$10,000).
    • Premium option: Custom cabinetry and stone benchtops ($15,000–$30,000).
    • DIY trade management: Installing cabinets yourself and coordinating trades can save $5,000–$10,000, but requires planning and experience.
  2. Appliances
    • Entry-level: Oven, hob, rangehood ($2,000–$5,000).
    • High-end: Smart appliances, integrated fridges ($10,000–$20,000+).
  3. Flooring and Finishes
    • Budget: Vinyl or basic tiles ($50–$100/m²).
    • Premium: Engineered wood or porcelain tiles ($150–$250/m²).
  4. Labour Costs
    • Tradespeople charge $80–$150/hour in NZ, with Auckland and Wellington at the higher end. A full remodel typically requires 50–100 hours of labour ($4,000–$15,000).
  5. Layout Changes
    • Keeping the existing layout avoids plumbing and electrical costs. Moving a sink or adding an island adds $2,000–$10,000.

Regional Variations in Kitchen Renovation Cost NZ

Where you live has a direct bearing on what you’ll pay:

  • Auckland and Wellington: Higher demand and labour rates ($100–$150/hour) push mid-range kitchens to $30,000–$50,000. Premium materials and open-plan layouts add further.
  • Christchurch and Regional Canterbury: More accessible labour ($80–$120/hour) keeps averages around $25,000–$35,000.
  • Rural Otago or Northland: Base costs may drop to $20,000–$30,000, but transporting materials to remote areas can add $1,000–$5,000.

As a practical example: a kitchen renovation in Auckland with custom cabinetry and stone benchtops might hit $45,000. The same specification in Dunedin might come in at $35,000. Setting a budget without accounting for your location is one of the most common planning mistakes.

Budgeting by Renovation Type

Here’s how costs break down across the three main tiers:

  • Basic Kitchen Renovation ($16,832–$25,000):
New pre-made cabinets, laminate benchtops, basic appliances. Good for small kitchens or homeowners managing trades directly.
  • Mid-Range Kitchen Renovation ($25,664–$40,000):
Custom cabinetry, quality appliances, modern flooring. The most common outcome for NZ homeowners renovating for comfort or resale.
  • Luxury Kitchen Renovation ($40,000–$173,880+):
Stone benchtops, premium appliances, bespoke design. Common in Auckland’s premium suburbs and for homeowners planning to stay long-term.

How to Keep Costs Down

  • Keep the existing layout: Avoiding plumbing and electrical relocation saves $2,000–$5,000.
  • Pre-made over custom: Pre-fabricated cabinets can cut cabinetry costs by around 50%.
  • Source locally: NZ-made benchtops and flooring reduce import costs.
  • Manage trades yourself: Coordinating your own tradespeople avoids project management fees, which can run 10–15% of the total.

Why Costs Vary: A Real-World Example

The same 10m² kitchen with custom cabinets and a stone benchtop:

  • Auckland: $35,000 (custom cabinets, stone benchtop, $120/hour labour).
  • Christchurch: $28,000 (same specification, $90/hour labour, local materials).
  • Rural NZ: $25,000 (pre-made cabinets, laminate, minimal transport costs).

2. Kitchen Renovation Cost Factors in NZ: What Drives Your Budget in 2026?

Small projects — swapping cabinet doors, repainting, updating a splashback — might start at $16,832 + GST. Full renovations with custom builds and premium finishes start at $41,000 + GST and can reach $173,880 + GST for high-end custom work. Here’s a detailed breakdown of what’s actually driving those numbers.

Breaking Down Kitchen Renovation Costs in NZ

The table below shows how a typical kitchen renovation budget of $28,908 + GST breaks down across each cost category. Use it to understand where the money goes and where you have flexibility.

Item Budget % Average Cost (NZD)
Cabinetry 28% $9,039
Installation & Labour 18% $5,695
Appliances 15% $4,678
Countertops & Backsplash 11% $3,381
Flooring 7% $2,271
Lighting 5% $1,449
Painting 5% $1,587
Windows & Doors 4% $1,408
Designer Fees 3% $994
Plumbing 3% $1,007
Other (e.g., Permits) 1% $428

Note: Costs are approximate and exclude GST. Prices vary by region (higher in Auckland) and material quality.

What Each Cost Driver Actually Means

Cabinetry (28% — $9,039)

  • Why it costs the most: Custom cabinets in solid timber or with premium finishes like matte lacquer require skilled work and quality materials — costs reach $10,000–$20,000+ for fully custom joinery.
  • Budget option: Pre-made cabinets at $3,000–$7,000 reduce cost significantly but limit what you can specify.

Installation and Labour (18% — $5,695)

  • Regional impact: Auckland trades sit at $120–$150/hour. A full renovation typically needs 50–100 hours across multiple trades — $4,000–$15,000 in labour alone.
  • DIY saving: Coordinating trades yourself removes project management fees (10–15% of budget).

Appliances (15% — $4,678)

  • Range: Basic oven, hob, rangehood runs $2,000–$5,000. Luxury options — double ovens, smart fridges — hit $10,000–$20,000.
  • Worth noting: Energy-efficient appliances are increasingly common in NZ renovations and reduce ongoing running costs.

Benchtops and Splashback (11% — $3,381)

  • Material difference: Laminate benchtops cost $200–$500/m². Granite, marble, or engineered stone run $500–$1,200/m². A 3m² benchtop is $600 in laminate or $3,600 in stone.
  • Splashback: Tiled or glass splashbacks add $500–$1,500 and make a real visual difference relative to their cost.

Flooring (7% — $2,271)

  • Options: Vinyl ($50–$100/m²) for budget-conscious renovations; porcelain tiles or hardwood ($100–$250/m²) for durability and aesthetics. A 10m² kitchen floor ranges from $500–$2,500.

Lighting, Painting, and Supporting Items (15% — $4,485 combined)

  • Lighting ($1,449): LED under-cabinet lights or pendants add $500–$2,000.
  • Painting ($1,587): Professional painting of walls and cabinets runs $1,000–$2,000.
  • Windows/Doors ($1,408): Upgrades for ventilation or natural light start from $1,000.

Plumbing and Designer Fees (6% — $2,001)

  • Plumbing ($1,007): Relocating a sink or adding wet points adds $1,000–$3,000.
  • Designer ($994): Worth the investment for mid-range and luxury projects. Not essential for simple refreshes.

3. Small vs. Full Kitchen Renovation Costs

  • Small projects ($16,832–$25,000):
Cabinet door replacements, a new splashback, or a paint refresh. Lower cost, shorter timeline — right for rental properties or quick updates before a sale.
  • Full renovations ($41,000+):
Demolition, custom cabinetry, stone benchtops, new flooring, lighting, and appliances. Layout changes — adding an island, removing a wall — push costs higher. In Auckland where labour averages $120/hour, full renovations move through budget quickly.

Common Mistakes That Inflate Costs

These are the decisions that regularly push projects over budget:

  • Underestimating cabinetry: Custom joinery can double your cabinet budget. Get this nailed down before committing to anything else.
  • Cheap materials upfront: Low-quality benchtops or appliances that need replacing in five years cost more than spending right the first time.
  • Skipping the planning stage: Not working with a designer or underestimating storage needs leads to expensive fixes once construction is underway.
  • Missing hidden costs: Plumbing, electrical, or permits that weren’t scoped add $2,000–$5,000 mid-project.

Set aside a 10–15% contingency. For older Auckland homes especially, it will almost certainly be needed.

Real-World Example: Auckland vs. Regional NZ

A 15m² mid-range kitchen with custom cabinets and stone benchtops:

  • Auckland: $45,000 ($120/hour labour).
  • Canterbury: $35,000 ($90/hour labour, local materials).
  • Saving tip: Switching to laminate benchtops and pre-made cabinets brings Auckland costs down to around $30,000.

4. Cost for Renovating a Kitchen per Square Metre NZ

Auckland homeowners spend an average of $2,300 per square metre on kitchen renovations in 2026, but this figure shifts considerably with scope and specification. Basic renovations start at $1,533/m²; high-end projects with premium finishes can reach $4,167/m² or more.

Kitchen Renovation Cost per Square Metre: What to Expect

  • Basic renovation: $1,533–$2,000/m²
Pre-made cabinetry, laminate benchtops, minor updates — right for rentals and straightforward refreshes.
  • Mid-range renovation: $2,000–$3,000/m²
Custom cabinets, quality appliances, modern flooring — the most common outcome for Auckland homeowners.
  • Luxury renovation: $3,000–$4,167+/m²
Stone benchtops, premium appliances, bespoke design — typical of Remuera and similar premium suburbs.

For a 10m² kitchen, this translates to:

  • Basic: $15,330–$20,000
  • Mid-range: $20,000–$30,000
  • Luxury: $30,000–$41,670+

Note: Costs exclude GST and vary by region — Auckland runs higher due to labour rates.

What Drives Cost per Square Metre?

  1. Scope of work
    • Minor updates (new splashback, fresh paint) sit around $1,500/m².
    • Full demolition and custom build pushes toward $3,000–$4,000/m².
  2. Materials
    • Benchtops: Laminate ($200/m²) vs. engineered stone ($800–$1,200/m²).
    • Flooring: Vinyl ($50/m²) vs. hardwood ($200/m²).
    • Cabinetry: Pre-made ($300/m² of kitchen space) vs. custom ($800/m²+).
  3. Layout changes
    • Keeping the existing layout saves $200–$500/m² on plumbing and electrical.
    • Adding an island or relocating a sink adds $300–$1,000/m².
  4. Location
    • Auckland: $2,500–$4,000/m² due to labour ($120–$150/hour) and material transport.
    • Regional NZ (e.g., Canterbury): $1,800–$3,000/m² with lower labour rates.

5. Questions to Ask Before Renovating Your Kitchen

Getting clear on these before you start saves money and frustration:

  1. What’s the goal? Adding resale value or creating a long-term family kitchen — these require different approaches and different budgets.
  2. What’s actually getting renovated? Cabinetry and benchtops only, or flooring and appliances too? What stays?
  3. Any special features? Island, built-in pantry, smart appliances — nail these down before quoting.
  4. Layout changes? Keeping it as-is or reconfiguring?
  5. Style? Modern minimalist, classic Kiwi, or something else?
  6. Hard budget limit? $20,000, $40,000, or more — be honest about this from the start.

Getting specific answers here shapes the project and prevents scope creep. Adding a kitchen island — common in NZ for entertaining — adds $5,000–$10,000 to a 10m² kitchen, pushing costs toward $2,500–$3,000/m².

Renovating for Resale? A Practical Budget Guide

Industry guidance suggests spending 5–15% of your property’s value on the kitchen for a resale renovation:

  • $500,000 home: $25,000–$75,000 (or $2,500–$7,500/m² for a 10m² kitchen).
  • $1,000,000 home: $50,000–$150,000 (or $5,000–$15,000/m²). Kitchens are consistently one of the top selling points for NZ buyers.

Real-World Example: 12m² Kitchen Costs

  • Auckland mid-range (12m²):
    • Custom cabinets, stone benchtops, new tiles.
    • Cost: $36,000 ($3,000/m²).
  • Christchurch budget (12m²):
    • Pre-made cabinets, laminate, vinyl flooring.
    • Cost: $21,996 ($1,833/m²).
  • Luxury NZ rural (12m²):
    • Marble benchtops, smart appliances, hardwood.
    • Cost: $50,004 ($4,167/m²).

How to Control Per-Square-Metre Costs

  • Stick to basics: No layout changes, laminate over stone — stays under $2,000/m².
  • Source locally: NZ-made materials save $100–$300/m² on transport.
  • Use a designer: $994–$2,000 upfront to maximise the space and avoid costly rework later is money well spent.

6. Basic, Mid-Range, and Luxury Kitchen Renovation Costs in NZ

Luxury Kitchen Renovation

Which tier suits your budget?

  • Basic ($16,560–$28,980): Keep it practical. Pre-made options and some DIY keep costs under control. A sensible approach for anyone with a tight budget or a rental property.
  • Mid-range ($32,000–$88,320): Custom features and quality materials without overcapitalising. The right answer for most Auckland homeowners.
  • Luxury (up to $173,880): Premium everything. Right for high-value properties or homeowners who plan to stay and want to enjoy the space fully.

For resale, the practical guide remains spending 5–15% of your home’s value on the kitchen renovation.

Most Auckland homeowners don’t pick one tier and stick to it. The more common approach is to mix and match — mid-range cabinetry with a luxury benchtop, or basic flooring with a properly specified appliance package. That flexibility is how you get the most out of a kitchen renovation budget without locking yourself into a formula that doesn’t quite fit.

Mixing Tiers for the Right Result

In practice, this might look like:

  • Repainting existing cabinets ($500–$1,500) and upgrading to engineered stone benchtops ($3,000–$6,000).
  • A mid-range overall renovation with smart appliances added ($5,000–$10,000) as the one premium element.
  • A basic refresh that splurges specifically on a custom pantry ($2,000–$5,000) — the most-used storage area in the kitchen.

This kind of targeted spending is how you get a result that feels right for your family without blowing the budget in ways that won’t deliver obvious value.

“Matte finishes and smart lighting are dominating Auckland kitchens in 2026, but always pair them with durable, easy-clean surfaces to comply with Clause G3 — it’s what keeps renovations practical and long-lasting for busy families.” — Dorothy Li, Design Manager, Superior Renovations.

7. How Much Does It Cost to Remodel a Small Kitchen in NZ in 2026?

For a small kitchen — typically 75 square feet or less — renovation costs in NZ range from $10,520 to $27,600 + GST in 2026. Costs scale with what you’re changing, not just the size of the space. A small kitchen with limited storage that needs smart reconfiguration can end up costing as much as a straightforward larger room.

Small Kitchen Renovation Costs: What’s Included?

For a kitchen up to 75 sq ft (~7m²):

  • Basic upgrade: $10,520–$15,000
    • Repainting cabinets, new laminate benchtops, basic appliances.
  • Mid-range refresh: $15,000–$27,600
    • Custom storage, stone benchtops, tiled flooring, modern sink.

Cost by Size: 10’x10′ vs. 12’x12′

  • 10’x10′ Kitchen (~9.3m², 100 sq ft):
    • Cost range: $20,700–$47,400 + GST
    • What’s included: Custom cabinets ($5,000–$10,000), quartz benchtops ($2,000–$4,000), new appliances ($3,000–$7,000).
    • Example: A 10’x10′ Auckland kitchen with neutral palette and open-plan adjustment — approximately $25,000.
  • 12’x12′ Kitchen (~13.4m², 144 sq ft):
    • Cost range: $27,600–$62,100 + GST
    • What’s included: Room for a small island ($5,000–$10,000), premium flooring ($2,000–$4,000), smart features ($1,000–$3,000).
    • Example: A 12’x12′ kitchen with stone finishes and designer splashback in Wellington — approximately $40,000.

Note: Add 10–20% in Auckland for higher labour rates ($120–$150/hour).

Making the Most of a Small Kitchen

Small kitchens need smarter decisions, not just smaller budgets. Here’s what actually works:

  1. Prioritise storage over space
    • Pull-out baskets ($200–$500), spice drawers ($100–$300), and corner cabinets ($500–$1,000) recover usable space without requiring new cabinetry ($3,000–$10,000).
  2. Add internal drawers
    • Retrofitting drawers inside existing cabinets ($300–$800) frees up bench space — valuable in a tight layout.
  3. Maximise the benchtop
    • A single modern sink instead of a double ($500–$1,000) gains prep space. A 4-burner stove over 8 ($1,000–$2,000 saving) leaves budget for a splashback upgrade ($500–$1,500).

If existing benchtops are in reasonable condition, polishing rather than replacing ($300–$1,000) keeps costs under $15,000.

Why Get Professional Input on a Small Kitchen?

Small kitchens leave less margin for error. Working with renovation professionals ensures:

  • Storage solutions are thought through for your specific family and how you actually use the kitchen.
  • Design choices that make a small space feel larger rather than cramped.
  • Visualisation — 3D models and rendered drawings show materials, textures, and fixtures before any work starts.

Getting this right upfront avoids the expensive situation of completing a renovation and then realising the storage still doesn’t work.

8. How Much Does It Cost to Remodel a Large Kitchen in NZ in 2026?

For kitchens 18 square metres or larger, renovation costs in NZ range from $62,000 to $138,000 + GST in 2026. At this scale, you’re typically looking at double appliances, islands, butler’s pantries, and significant layout changes — all of which add up quickly, particularly in Auckland.

Large Kitchen Renovation Costs: What’s Included?

For a kitchen of 18m² or more (~194 sq ft):

  • Mid-range large kitchen: $62,000–$90,000
    • Custom cabinetry, stone benchtops, new flooring, single island.
  • Luxury large kitchen: $90,000–$138,000+
    • Double appliances, dual islands, butler’s pantry, premium materials, extensive layout changes.

What Drives Large Kitchen Costs?

  • Size and scope: At 18m²+, expect $3,444–$7,667/m² depending on specification.
  • Layout changes: Removing walls or relocating plumbing and electrical adds $5,000–$20,000, including council consent costs ($2,000–$6,000).
  • Appliances: Double ovens, extra fridges, smart technology — $10,000–$30,000.
  • Feature additions:
    • Dual island: $10,000–$20,000 for two prep and serving zones.
    • Butler’s pantry: $5,000–$15,000 for a fully fitted additional storage and workspace.
  • Materials: Marble benchtops ($1,000–$2,000/m²) or hardwood floors ($200–$400/m²) push budgets significantly higher.

A 20m² luxury kitchen with a butler’s pantry and marble finishes in Auckland can reach $120,000.

9. Kitchen Cabinets: A Closer Look

Cabinetry is typically the largest single cost in a kitchen renovation — 20–40% of the total budget. It’s also the element that most defines how the finished kitchen looks and functions. Here’s what you’ll pay through a renovation company:

Average Cost for Kitchen Cabinets

  • Total range: $4,140–$11,040 for a standard kitchen.
  • Per linear foot — costs by level:
    • Basic: $103.50–$207/linear foot
      • Keep existing cabinets, replace doors and hinges ($500–$1,500), or repaint ($300–$1,000).
    • Mid-range: $138–$1,242/linear foot
      • Custom-built with MDF Melteca carcass and doors — durable and practical ($5,000–$10,000 total).
    • Luxury: $2,070+/linear foot
      • Solid timber or lacquered finishes ($15,000–$30,000+ total).

A 10-foot run of mid-range Auckland cabinetry might cost $6,000. The same run in luxury specification — $20,700.

What Affects Cabinet Costs

  • Top and bottom cabinets: Double the price compared to bottom-only setups.
  • Materials: MDF ($4,000–$8,000) vs. solid oak or walnut ($10,000–$20,000).
  • Internal features: Pull-out drawers ($200–$500) and magic corners ($500–$1,000) add functionality and cost.
  • Location: Auckland labour at $120–$150/hour makes installation more expensive than elsewhere in NZ.

10. Refinishing Kitchen Cabinets in NZ: Costs and Options for 2026

A full cabinet replacement isn’t always necessary. Refinishing or refacing existing cabinets can refresh a kitchen significantly at a fraction of the cost — and in some cases produces a result that’s difficult to distinguish from new. Here’s how the two approaches compare.

Two Ways to Revamp Cabinets Without Full Replacement

1. Refinishing Kitchen Cabinets

Average cost: $2,070–$4,140 + GST

  • What it involves: Stripping the existing paint or varnish, sanding smooth, and applying a fresh coat — a new colour, a matte finish, whatever suits the updated design direction.
  • Why it works: Transforms the look of tired cabinets without the cost of replacement. Particularly effective when the cabinet structure and layout are still sound.
  • Worth knowing: Professional application produces a significantly better result than DIY — expect $80–$150/hour for labour, with most jobs taking 15–25 hours.
  • Best for: Homeowners who want a cost-effective lift without committing to full cabinet replacement.

Refinishing 10 linear feet of cabinets in Auckland including labour and premium paint: approximately $3,000.

2. Refacing Kitchen Cabinets

Average cost: $4,830–$12,420 + GST

  • What it involves: Keeping the existing cabinet frames but replacing doors and drawer fronts. Exposed sides can be veneered to match.
  • Why it works: More customisation than refinishing — choose materials, colours, and designs. The result looks close to new cabinetry at substantially lower cost.
  • Worth knowing: Mid-range materials like Melteca deliver good durability at a sensible price. Costs increase with complexity and finish quality.
  • Best for: Homeowners who want a near-new look without the full replacement cost.

Refacing a 12-foot run with custom doors in Christchurch: approximately $8,000. Luxury finishes in Auckland: up to $12,000.

3. Hardware (Optional Upgrade)

Average cost: $2.76–$27.60 per piece

  • What it involves: Swapping handles or knobs for updated brass, matte black, or stainless steel options.
  • Why it works: One of the highest-ratio updates available — relatively small cost, disproportionate visual impact. For 20 pieces, budget $55–$552.
  • Worth pairing with: Refinishing or refacing. A full set of matte black handles adds $200–$500 and changes the feel of the whole kitchen.

Cost by Kitchen Size

  • Small kitchen (8m², ~10 linear feet):
    • Refinishing: $2,500–$3,500
    • Refacing: $5,000–$8,000
    • Hardware: $100–$300
  • Medium kitchen (12m², ~15 linear feet):
    • Refinishing: $3,000–$4,140
    • Refacing: $7,000–$12,420
    • Hardware: $200–$500

Note: Auckland projects may add 10–20% for higher labour rates.

Practical Cabinet Organisation Options

While updating the exterior, consider adding internal functionality:

  • Pull-out baskets: $200–$500 — particularly useful for deep lower cabinets.
  • Spice drawers: $100–$300 — keeps frequently used items accessible.
  • Sectioned drawers: $150–$400 — cutlery and utensil organisation.
  • Corner solutions: $500–$1,000 (magic corners) — recovers otherwise difficult-to-access space.

11. How Much Do Renovation Companies Charge for a Kitchen in NZ in 2026?

For a typical kitchen remodel, renovation companies in NZ charge between $10,000 and $50,000+ for labour and materials. What you get for that cost depends on scope and who you’re working with. Below is a breakdown of the individual service costs you’ll encounter when working with a full-service renovation company.

Average Costs of Renovation Services

Typical charges for each component of a kitchen renovation in NZ in 2026 (all figures + GST):

Service Average Cost (NZD)
Electrical $3,450–$6,624
Plumbing $4,140–$8,280
Design Consultation $552–$4,830
Cabinetry $4,140–$11,040
Appliances $3,450–$12,420
Flooring $1,518–$7,590
House Permits $138–$1,242
Reface Cabinets $1,518–$12,420
Repair Countertop $110–$2,208
Brand-New Countertop $1,242–$6,900
Splashback $552–$828
Painting $1,380–$3,450
Hardware (Handles, etc.) $207–$1,656

Note: Auckland rates run 10–20% higher than these figures in most categories.

12. Renovation Companies vs. Managing Trades Yourself

Why Use a Renovation Company?

A full-service company handles:

  • All trades: Electricians, plumbers, carpenters, painters — coordinated and managed.
  • Design: 3D models and layout plans ($552–$4,830).
  • Materials: Trade pricing on appliances and cabinetry — savings of 10–20% that partially offset management fees.
  • Project management: One point of accountability, warranties, and quality oversight — worth $5,000–$10,000 in avoided risk for most homeowners.

Companies reduce the likelihood of mid-project surprises because they’ve seen what older Auckland homes contain behind the walls.

Managing Your Own Trades

If you have trusted trades and project management experience:

  • Source directly: Contact a cabinetry manufacturer for design and installation ($4,000–$10,000), removing the middleman.
  • Manage trades: Coordinate flooring, plumbing, electrical yourself — saving 10–15% on management costs.
  • Real risk: Without experience, structural surprises, trade conflicts, and sequencing issues inflate costs and timelines.

Most renovations uncover unexpected issues once the walls are opened. Experience is the difference between managing these efficiently and paying premium rates to fix them urgently. Companies offer warranties and certainty that DIY project management rarely can.

Managing your own kitchen renovation trades?

We don’t recommend self-managing unless you have prior renovation experience and trades you trust — not all homes are the same, and that’s where experience reduces cost and delay risk. The surprises in Auckland’s older villas are consistent in their unpredictability.

That said, if you’re managing the project yourself, the most cost-effective approach is to go direct to a cabinetry manufacturer for design, manufacture, and installation — then manage the remaining trades (flooring, demolition, painting, plastering, splashback, tiling, electrician, plumber, carpenter) yourself.

12. Kitchen Appliances

Quality appliances add measurable value to a kitchen and the property overall. Budget $138–$414 per appliance as a rough indicator, but specification varies significantly. Many homeowners retain existing appliances if they’re still working well — it’s a legitimate way to reduce the overall budget without compromising on what matters most.

  • Basic appliances — microwave, garbage disposal, and oven — last well when maintained. Keeping functional existing appliances saves $276–$1,380.
  • Energy Star-rated appliances reduce running costs, increase lifespan, and add to your home’s energy efficiency credentials. More expensive upfront, but the running cost savings accumulate over time. Energy Star appliances start at $414 for microwaves, $1,200 for dishwashers, $1,150 for ovens, and $1,500 for fridges.
  • High-end appliances add smart features — Bluetooth, sensors, integration with other home systems. Longer lifespan and stronger warranties. Cost: $1,380–$6,900+ per appliance.
  • Fully integrated/custom appliances are built into the cabinetry for a seamless look. The most expensive option at $2,070–$13,800, but the visual outcome is distinct.

13. Kitchen Benchtops

Benchtop selection is one of the most consequential decisions in a kitchen renovation. It needs to be functional, hard-wearing, and water-resistant — and it needs to look the part for years. The range of materials available today means there’s a credible option at almost every price point.

DSC06467 Kitchen Renovation Cost NZ 2026: $10,000-$100,00+ Guide

Custom built stone engineered countertop used for Mary’s kitchen. We made this engineered stone look like pattered granite with a shiny sheen. The pattern chosen above is called Autumn leaf and like its name has yellow and mustard undertones which complements the dark cabinets well.

For an affordable option, laminate or engineered stone (man-made stone that can replicate marble or granite) works well for basic and mid-range kitchens. Total countertop cost typically runs $2,760–$6,210. Natural stone — real marble or granite — starts from around $4,000 and can reach $7,000. For luxury renovations, concrete benchtops are a genuinely distinctive choice — harder wearing than their appearance suggests and running anywhere between $9,000 and $20,000 depending on the specification.

The full cost range by material:

Countertop Material Cost per Square Metre
Ceramic Tile $76.70–$153.30
Acrylic $30.10–$416.10
Formica $230–$460
Laminate $383–$613
Bamboo $383.30–$920
Solid Surface $497.80–$924
Butcher Block $613.30–$920
Corian $613.30–$920
Concrete $613.30–$1,226.70
Soapstone $613.30–$1,303.30
Marble $613.30–$1,533.30
Caesarstone $613.30–$1,533.30
Paperstone $613.30–$1,533.30
Granite $766.70–$1,533.30
Terrazzo $766.70–$1,533.30
Quartz $766.70–$1,533.30
Onyx $766.70–$3,066.70
Limestone $996.70–$2,300.00
Glass $1,226.70–$1,533.30
Copper $1,533.30–$1,993.30

Budget-friendly tip:

If your existing benchtop is structurally sound, having it restored professionally is worth considering rather than replacing it outright.

Countertop restoration typically costs $110.40–$2,208 — a fraction of replacement cost.

14. Kitchen Splashbacks Cost in NZ

A splashback protects walls from cooking and prep splatter while doing a significant portion of the kitchen’s visual work. In 2026, costs range from $153.30 to $383.30+ per square metre depending on material. The splashback is one of the most cost-effective places to introduce a design element that lifts the whole room.

Why Splashbacks Matter

  • Easy cleaning: Glass or large tiles with minimal grout lines are significantly easier to maintain than smaller tile formats.
  • Durability: Engineered stone and stainless steel both handle heat and staining well.
  • Visual impact: Disproportionate design contribution for the area it covers.

Splashback Materials and Costs

1. Ceramic Tiles

Cost: $153.30/sq. metre

  • Versatile, affordable, available in classic subway or bold mosaic formats.
  • Widely available across NZ; easy to install.
  • More grout lines mean more cleaning unless you specify larger tiles.
  • Right for small kitchens or homeowners working to a tight budget.

A 2m² splashback in Christchurch: approximately $306.60.

2. Stainless Steel

Cost: $383.30/sq. metre

  • Heat-resistant, no grout, easy to clean — particularly practical behind a stove.
  • Suits contemporary Auckland kitchens well.
  • Shows fingerprints and can scratch — worth knowing before you commit.

A 3m² stainless steel splashback in Auckland: approximately $1,149.90.

3. Glass

Cost: $200–$400/sq. metre

  • Seamless, reflective, and available in custom colours. No grout.
  • Makes a small kitchen feel more open.
  • Requires professional installation; mid-to-high price point.

A 2.5m² glass splashback in Wellington: approximately $750.

4. Engineered Stone

Cost: $300–$600/sq. metre

  • Creates a cohesive look when matched to the benchtop material.
  • Durable and stain-resistant.
  • Professional installation required.

A 3m² engineered stone splashback in a high-end NZ kitchen: approximately $1,500.

Cost by Kitchen Size

  • Small kitchen (1–2m² splashback):
    • Ceramic: $153–$306
    • Stainless steel: $383–$766
  • Large kitchen (3–4m² splashback):
    • Glass: $600–$1,600
    • Engineered stone: $900–$2,400

Note: Auckland adds 10–20% for labour and transport.

Practical Splashback Tips

  • Larger tiles: Fewer grout lines significantly reduce cleaning — still only $153.30/m² for large-format ceramic.
  • Match the style: Stainless steel for contemporary Auckland kitchens, glass for light coastal neutrals.
  • Budget option: Extending a laminate benchtop remnant as a splashback ($50–$100/m²) gives a seamless result at low cost.

Factor in installation — $200–$500 for tiles, up to $1,000 for stone or glass.

Ceramic tiles are the most cost-effective splashback option at $153.30/sq. metre. Stainless steel is the next step up at $383.30/sq. metre — a practical choice for anyone who wants something easy to clean and contemporary looking.

15. Kitchen Flooring Cost in NZ

Kitchen flooring takes more daily punishment than almost any other surface in the house. The right choice needs to handle constant foot traffic, cooking spills, and the occasional dropped item — while remaining easy to clean and comfortable underfoot. In 2026, costs range from $690 to $9,522+ for a typical NZ kitchen.

What to Look for in Kitchen Flooring

  • Durability: Resistance to scratches, staining, and moisture.
  • Easy cleaning: Smooth surfaces or large-format tiles are significantly more practical than small tile formats with extensive grout lines.
  • Resale value: A quality floor that’s consistent with the kitchen’s overall finish adds to the property’s appeal.

Flooring Options and Costs

Flooring Type Average Cost (NZD) Key Features
Ceramic Tile $690–$3,036 Easy upkeep, mimics wood or stone
Wood Flooring $3,036–$6,900 Warm, classic, needs sealing
Concrete Flooring $2,070–$9,522 Industrial, durable, customisable
Cork Floor $1,104–$2,208 Soft, eco-friendly, less durable
Laminate Flooring $2,070–$5,520 Affordable, wood-look, easy clean
Linoleum Flooring $1,380–$3,450 Budget-friendly, soft, versatile
Slate Floor $2,070–$4,830 Rustic, tough, slip-resistant
Stone Flooring $1,380–$4,830 Durable, waterproof, lifetime warranty
Vinyl Floor $1,656–$2,346 Affordable, waterproof, easy install
Bamboo Floors $828–$1,656 Sustainable, warm, less durable
Marble Floors $2,070–$6,624 Elegant, premium, high maintenance

Note: Costs are for a typical 10–15m² kitchen. Auckland may add 10–20% for higher labour rates.

The Most Practical Options for NZ Kitchens

1. Laminate Flooring

Cost: $2,070–$5,520

  • Replicates timber at significantly lower cost — the most popular budget flooring choice in Auckland kitchens.
  • Durable and stain-resistant in standard conditions.
  • Not fully waterproof without sealing — worth considering in wet-prone areas.

A 12m² laminate floor in Christchurch: approximately $3,000.

2. Ceramic Tiles

Cost: $690–$3,036

  • Advanced production technology now produces tiles that genuinely replicate wood or stone — the look without the maintenance.
  • Waterproof and easy to clean.
  • In Bucklands Beach, we installed ceramic hardwood-mimic tiles in a 15m² kitchen for $2,000.

3. Stone Flooring

Cost: $1,380–$4,830

  • Quartz and composite stone options are 100% waterproof, carry lifetime warranties, and work with underfloor heating.
  • Excellent for longevity and a premium feel.
  • Professional installation required.

An 18m² stone floor in Wellington: approximately $4,000.

4. Vinyl Flooring

Cost: $1,656–$2,346

  • Waterproof, available in wood and tile appearances, comfortable underfoot.
  • DIY-friendly installation.
  • Less durable long-term than tile or stone.

Practical flooring tips for NZ homes:

  • Want the timber look without the upkeep? Ceramic or laminate wood-look options deliver it reliably.
  • High moisture risk? Stone or vinyl are the safe specifications.
  • Standing for long periods? Cork or linoleum cushion impact — relevant for anyone who cooks seriously.
  • Unsure what suits your space? A renovation professional who knows Auckland’s climate and building stock will give you a direct answer.

Laminated wood flooring is the most popular and cost-effective flooring option across Auckland — it’s practical, looks good, and holds up reasonably well in normal kitchen conditions. Always check with a professional for the right specification for your specific layout.

  • Laminated wood flooring — looks and feels like real timber but is significantly cheaper and easier to maintain. Cost: $2,070–$5,520.
  • Tiles — modern production technology allows tiles to convincingly replicate timber or oak — the look you want without the sealing and maintenance requirements of natural wood.
  • For a more premium finish, stone-based flooring from suppliers like Tile Depot is worth considering — 100% waterproof, compatible with underfloor heating, easy to maintain, and carrying a lifetime warranty. Average cost: $1,380–$4,830.

3D-VIEW-02 Kitchen Renovation Cost NZ 2026: $10,000-$100,00+ Guide

16. Cost of Hiring an Interior Designer for Your Kitchen in NZ in 2026

A designer isn’t essential for a basic kitchen refresh — but for mid-range to luxury renovations, the return on that investment is real. They bring specific expertise in materials, spatial layout, and what actually works in Auckland kitchens. In 2026, design costs typically run $552 to $4,830+.

What a Designer Actually Delivers

  • Material and style guidance: Specific recommendations for NZ conditions — what holds up in Auckland’s humidity, what’s trending, what will still look right in ten years.
  • 3D visualisation: You see the kitchen with exact paint colours, benchtop materials, handles, and appliances before any work starts. Changes at this stage are free. Changes during construction are not.
  • Layout optimisation: Storage, workflow, and functional flow for how your family actually uses the kitchen.
  • Value protection: A well-designed kitchen consistently performs better at resale than one that was specified without professional input.

Design Costs in NZ

  • Basic consultation: $552–$1,500
    • Colour and material advice for smaller kitchens or homeowners doing much of the coordination themselves.
  • Mid-range design: $1,500–$3,000
    • Full design plan with 3D modelling for a 10–15m² kitchen — appropriate when custom cabinetry or layout changes are involved.
  • Full-service luxury: $3,000–$4,830+

What the Design Process Looks Like

The specifics vary between companies, but a good design process typically involves:

1. Initial consultation
Understanding your brief, style preferences, and how you use the kitchen. The goal is alignment before any design work begins.

2. Showroom visit
Seeing and touching materials, colours, and finishes in person. It’s difficult to make confident decisions from samples alone — a showroom visit resolves most uncertainty quickly.

3. Design session
Access to sample boards, colour charts, and full kitchen displays. This is where options are explored and preferences refined.

4. Detailed design plan
A comprehensive document including fitting lists, colour codes, rendered drawings, and precise measurements. This is what gets priced and built.

A good designer prevents the expensive mistakes that happen when decisions are made in sequence on-site rather than systematically upfront. For mid-range to luxury renovations, the design fee pays for itself.

17. Labour Costs for Kitchen Renovations in NZ

Hiring the full trade complement for a kitchen renovation — plumbers, electricians, tilers, grouters, painters, plasterers, installers, builders, project managers, and designers — typically runs $2,760–$10,280 in total labour cost.

Plumbing Cost

Plumbing costs apply when pipes need replacement or new plumbing points are added. Not every kitchen renovation requires it — but when it does, the costs are significant.

  • Basic kitchen faucet installation: $207–$414. Designer faucets: up to $2,000.
  • Kitchen sink installation: $345–$828.
  • Appliance plumbing (dishwasher, fridge water line, etc.): $621–$2,480.

Electrical and Lighting

Electrical work costs $69–$138 per hour. This covers:

  • Recessed lighting installation.
  • Cabling for new appliances — stove, microwave, oven.
  • Light switches, USB ports, cabinet lighting.
  • Under-cabinet lighting.

Gas line work requires certified professionals and costs $345–$2,500 depending on scope.

Painting

Professional painting is worth the cost — it produces a finish that holds up significantly longer than DIY.

Professional kitchen painting includes plastering, gib stopping, two undercoats, and two topcoats. It also covers masking electrical ports and protecting cabinetry. This is not the same process as rolling a wall at home.

Cost range: $1,104 for small kitchens, up to $3,500 for larger spaces.

Tiling and Flooring Labour

Laminate flooring supply and installation: $80–$140 per square metre. Labour only: $50–$80 per square metre.

Tile installation labour: $1,000–$3,500 depending on complexity. Larger tiles cost less to lay — fewer grout lines means less time. Smaller format tiles with intricate patterns take significantly longer and cost more.

Building Consent

  • Required for structural changes, relocated plumbing, or new electrical runs — mandated under the Building Act 2004.
  • Process:
    • Submit plans through Auckland Council (or relevant local authority).
    • Standard processing: 1–5 months. Plan well in advance of any deadline.
  • Includes architect fees, documentation, and inspections.
  • Budget $3,000–$4,000 for a typical Auckland kitchen consent.

Consent for a layout change in an 18m² kitchen: approximately $4,000.

18. Building Consents for Kitchen Renovations in Auckland

In New Zealand, significant kitchen renovations — any work involving structural changes, plumbing relocation, or substantial electrical modification — require building consent. Auckland Council manages this process under the Building Act 2004 and Building Code.

Building consent is required if you’re removing or altering a load-bearing wall, relocating plumbing for a new layout, or making changes that affect the structural envelope. Relocated plumbing means new piping — that work has to go through the consent process. Structural alterations have to meet building safety standards. There are no exceptions for older homes or “it was always like that” situations.

When you submit for consent, Auckland Council reviews the plans prepared by your architect or designer and assesses whether the proposed work meets building standards. Once approved, construction can begin.

Consent costs for Auckland kitchen renovations typically run $2,500–$6,500 depending on project complexity. Processing takes 1–5 months — submit well ahead of your target start date. If you’re planning to have the renovation done before Christmas, the consent application needs to be in well before spring.

For full detail on the consent process, visit building.govt.nz.

Official Auckland Council Building Consent Fees for Kitchen Renovations (2026) From Auckland Council Building Consent Fees and Charges:

  • Minor plumbing (value < $5,000, with producer statement): Fixed fee $343 (non-refundable).
  • Minor plumbing (not by approved installer, < $5,000): Fixed $343 + inspection deposit $195.
  • Work with rainwater tanks connected to internal plumbing: Base $624 + inspection $390.
  • Exemptions (Schedule 1 Building Act): Repair or replacement of existing sanitary fixtures (e.g., sink) often requires no consent if carried out by an authorised person.
  • Required for: Adding new fixtures, structural changes (e.g., moving walls that affect plumbing), or drainage impacts. Fees are hourly (e.g., Technical Level 1 Residential $195/hour) or project-based. Most kitchen renovations with plumbing or structural elements need consent — we manage this process for our clients.

Compliance and ROI for Auckland Kitchen Renovations

  • Building Code G3 ensures hygienic food preparation surfaces — impervious finishes and adequate ventilation. Particularly relevant in Auckland’s humidity where non-compliant kitchens can develop mould and contamination issues.
  • Non-compliance with consent requirements risks fines or rework under the Building Act — and creates problems at the point of sale.
  • ROI: A well-designed, compliant kitchen consistently returns 50–80% of its renovation cost in added property value. Durable, energy-efficient specifications perform better at the upper end of that range.
  • Retaining the existing layout saves $2,000–$10,000 on plumbing and electrical while still meeting G3 requirements — a practical approach for suburbs like Papatoetoe or Albany where the existing configuration works. Always verify with Auckland Council for your specific project.

19. How to Renovate a Kitchen Affordably

Budget clarity before you start is essential. Know your number, get a fixed quote before committing to a company, and build in contingency. A renovation that starts without a clear budget almost always ends with a number the homeowner wasn’t expecting.

Set aside additional funds for unforeseen circumstances — water damage or rotten timber behind walls is not unusual in Auckland’s older housing stock. Budget an additional $1,000–$2,000 for this possibility.

What an Affordable Renovation Actually Covers

For a basic kitchen renovation around $20,700, your material and labour choices need to reflect that budget. The table below shows what’s realistic at each level.

Budget, Mid-Range, and High-End: What’s Included

Affordable Kitchen Renovation Mid-Range Kitchen Renovation High-End Kitchen Renovation
$20,700 max $32,700–$41,400 >$41,400

This includes,

  • Modernised sink
  • Granite countertop
  • Splashback
  • Refacing cabinets
  • Refinish painting
  • Upgraded appliances
  • No change in layout
  • DIY

This includes,

  • Stone engineered countertop (marble or granite)
  • Kitchen designer
  • Custom cabinetry
  • Stone-based flooring
  • Tiled flooring
  • Layout change possible
  • Adding an island
  • Project management
  • All trades included

Full customisation from start to end, including:

  • Kitchen designer
  • Premium appliances
  • New kitchen layout
  • High-end materials throughout
  • Designer products
  • Natural stone or concrete benchtops

Managing your own trades: If you have trusted tradespeople and the project management experience to coordinate them, sourcing directly reduces cost. Contact a cabinetry manufacturer for design and installation, then manage flooring, plumbing, electrical, and painting yourself. The saving is real — so is the risk if something goes wrong with coordination.

Four Practical Tips for Renovating on a Tight Budget

  1. DIY where it’s appropriate
Some tasks — painting, basic preparation, material sourcing — are manageable without trade qualifications. Plumbing and electrical are not. Know the difference and don’t cross the line that requires a licensed professional.
  2. Reface or repaint cabinets rather than replace them
If the cabinet structure is sound, this is one of the highest-ratio updates available. New doors or a fresh paint colour transforms the look at a fraction of full replacement cost.
  3. Upgrade essentials first
Handles, a new splashback, and a quality faucet can significantly change how a kitchen feels without touching the major cost items. Start there, then add bigger elements as budget allows.
  4. Stage the renovation if needed
There’s no rule that says everything has to happen at once. Spreading work across two or three phases — cabinetry now, flooring later — keeps individual commitments manageable.

20. Return on Investment on a Kitchen Renovation in NZ

Design and material selection shape how much value a kitchen renovation adds to a property. A well-considered layout that functions well for daily use and entertains well for guests creates the perception of quality that buyers respond to. The design decisions made upfront are what separate a renovation that adds meaningful value from one that simply looks new.

Hardware and fittings matter more than their cost suggests. Quality cabinet handles, a well-specified tapware, and durable benchtops signal attention to detail and longevity. In a mid-range renovation, these elements — stone or engineered countertops, soft-close drawers, quality appliances — create a result that reads as high-end without reaching the cost of a full luxury build.

Return on Investment by Renovation Level

What to realistically expect from each tier:

  • Basic renovation: ROI of 70–80%, with property value increases of roughly $15,000–$25,000. New paint, cabinet resurfacing, and upgraded hardware deliver strong returns at low cost.
  • Mid-range renovation: ROI of 60–70%, with value increases of $40,000–$55,000. New cabinetry, countertops, and appliances — without premium materials — perform consistently well.
  • Luxury renovation: ROI of 50–60%, with value increases of $80,000–$100,000. High-end materials and custom features deliver the largest absolute value increase, though the percentage return is lower.

ROI varies with location and neighbourhood demand. A premium kitchen in an entry-level suburb won’t return the same as the same kitchen in Remuera or Herne Bay. Auckland’s property market has shown sustained growth since 2018 — a well-timed, well-specified kitchen renovation remains one of the most reliable renovation investments available to NZ homeowners.

21. How to Choose the Right Renovation Company in Auckland

9 things to check before committing

  1. Research — Find at least three renovation companies. Check testimonials, current projects, and Google reviews. Ask friends and family who’ve renovated recently in Auckland.
  2. Meet the people — Talk to the project manager. Ask about similar projects they’ve completed. Your relationship with this person over the duration of the build matters more than any other single factor.
  3. Get multiple quotes — Don’t accept the first quote. Compare at least three. Make sure you’re getting a fixed price with variations clearly stated upfront. The cheapest option isn’t always the best value.
  4. Check suppliers — Ask who they source materials from. A company working with reputable suppliers who provide warranties for their products is a good sign. Ask for this information directly.
  5. Verify the company is legitimate — All companies should hold a current operating licence. Check via: https://companies-register.companiesoffice.govt.nz/
  6. Testimonials — Ask specifically about past kitchen renovations. Client experience during the build is as important as the finished result.
  7. Talk to past clients — Ask the company for a reference list and contact them. What materials did they use? Were there issues? Were problems resolved? Would they use them again?
  8. Insurance — Confirm the company carries insurance for mishaps during construction. A company that can commit to a completion date is also demonstrating that it has the systems and resources to deliver.
  9. The contract — Have your accountant or lawyer review the contract before signing. It should include the full scope, quote, insurance details, and a timeline. Both parties should be comfortable with what’s in writing before work starts.

Your reason for renovating — resale, rental yield improvement, long-term family comfort — shapes the right approach and the right budget. Understanding that clearly before engaging a company means you get advice that’s relevant to your situation rather than generic.

If you’re renovating for functionality and long-term enjoyment, choose materials that hold up and age well. A designer will help maximise storage, improve workflow, and make the space work harder for the same budget.

Superior Renovations provides full-service renovation including design, custom cabinetry and benchtops, all trades — electricians, plumbers, tilers, grouters, painters, builders — council permits, appliances, fixtures, and project management. One point of contact from start to finish.

New Kitchen Remodel Cost in NZ: Basic, Mid-Range & Luxury (2023)

Hey Aucklanders, if you’re eyeing up a kitchen remodel in your Grey Lynn villa or a busy family spot in Papatoetoe and wondering what it’ll actually cost in late 2025, you’re looking at $18,000–$120,000+ overall in NZ, with most folks landing $22,000–$45,000 for a solid upgrade that adds real value and flow. Auckland prices sit higher thanks to labour and materials, but sticking to smart choices—like keeping the layout or mid-range finishes—keeps it realistic without skimping on that Kiwi entertaining vibe.

What’s a Ballpark for Basic, Mid-Range, or Luxury Kitchen Remodels in Auckland?

Basic refreshes (same layout, refacing cabinets, laminate counters) run $16,000–$29,000—great for quick flips in spots like Papatoetoe or Bucklands Beach, using MDF Melteca cabinets and basic appliances. Mid-range is the sweet spot at $32,000–$45,000, adding islands ($4k–$6k extra), custom storage like magic corners, engineered stone benches ($520–$1,200/m²), and brands like SMEG or Bosch—think layout tweaks in West Harbour or Massey for better flow. Luxury? $50,000–$170,000+, with full custom (natural granite/marble $4k–$15k), butler’s pantries, smart lighting, and porcelain splashbacks from Tile Depot—spot-on for upscale Parnell or Remuera pads.

What Knocks the Price Up (or Keeps It Down) for Your Kiwi Kitchen?

Loads, mate—keeping the existing layout saves thousands on plumbing/electrical shifts, while changing it for an island or open-plan bumps costs heaps. Materials make a big diff: Budget laminate tops ($150/m²) vs. premium stone; MDF cabinets for easy clean vs. timber veneers like Melteca Oak. Appliances swing $2k–$30k (go energy-star for bill cuts), and extras like Blum soft-close hinges or LED under-cabinet lights add functionality without breaking the bank. Auckland’s pricier than regional spots, plus permits and trades (4–7 weeks timeline). Dorothy Li, our designer, reckons investing in durable storage pays off long-term, like pull-outs in Hillsborough projects.

How Do You Get Bang for Buck and Decent ROI Without Regrets?

Prioritise what your whānau needs—durable counters for daily chaos, smart storage to ditch clutter, and timeless neutrals that boost resale in our hot market (often 50–80% ROI). Reuse working appliances, shop mid-range like Bestwood veneers or Neptune hybrid flooring, and bundle for deals. We’ve seen transformations in Standmore Bay with warm oak finishes or Parnell with remote LEDs—feels brand new without overcapitalizing.

Most people in Auckland want to renovate their kitchen because their old kitchen does not suit their family’s lifestyle. Some kitchens are too old and shabby while others are just not functional. New Kitchen cost in NZ can range from $18,000 to $120,000 depending on many factors.

However, not everyone has a $100,000 budget to renovate a new kitchen. Most people want a simple upgrade and are only willing to spend between $18,000 to $30,000 for a new kitchen.

For the purpose of this article, we will explore kitchen cost options if you are renovating with a renovation company in Auckland and not DIY kitchens. When renovating with a renovation company your quotes will most include the cost for all fixtures, renovation materials, project management, council permits if any, all trades like plumbers, electricians, tilers, builders, installers, carpenters etc and project management. This section of our article will explore how to renovate a new kitchen on a budget. This is possible if the kitchen renovation is planned well and if your kitchen designer has a good knowledge of the renovation materials available today.

Already have all your own trades and you’re comfortable managing them for your kitchen renovation?

Although we don’t recommend if you haven’t renovated a kitchen before and/or you don’t have trades people you can trust, most renovations if not all comes with it’s own surprises because not all homes are the same – this is where experience/project management plays an important role in minimises risks to maintain costs/delays giving you higher certainty of outcome/quality backed by associated guarantees and warranties.

However, if you do intend to manage the kitchen renovation yourself, it does work out more cost effective to contact a kitchen cabinetry manufacturer directly to get the kitchen cabinets designed, manufactured and installed – leaving you to manage the other trades such as flooring, demolition, painting, plastering, splashback/tiling, electrician, plumber, and sometimes a carpenter/builder.

How much does a New Kitchen remodel cost in NZ? – Basic Kitchen

Firstly, you might want to think about the kitchen layout. For instance, how big do you want your kitchen to be? Are you going to keep your kitchen layout the same, or are you going to make some changes? What style do you want your kitchen to be? Do you want modern, traditional, or contemporary features? These are some good questions to ask yourself before you contact a renovation company.

    1. Kitchen Layout for a New Kitchen remodel on a budget

Most of the time a change in layout is not possible in a basic kitchen renovation. Changing the layout or moving your island, sink or plumbing will increase the cost of your kitchen renovation especially if you are on a budget.

If you are more likely to stay with your original kitchen layout, then in that case your cost will decrease, so you might want to consider staying with your existing layout of your kitchen. It is however possible to create a budget friendly kitchen if you choose your renovation materials carefully. We will now discuss the different elements of your new kitchen when on a budget.

    2. Cabinetry and Storage for basic kitchen remodel

The biggest expense in a new kitchen is cabinets. Do some research and get an idea of the kind of look you want for your kitchen cabinets. If you have an overly large kitchen then you might want to think about just changing its doors or changing cabinets that are damaged. This is where we use your standard cabinets and we remove old paint, stain, sanding and repairing the same boxes, and re-apply paint to the same wood of choice.

Building entirely new cabinets is also possible but you will have to use mid-range materials like MDF. Melteca and Goodwood are two of the most popular MDF brands in Auckland. MDF in simple terms is manufactured wood from a factory. It is easier to clean than natural wood and has a better finish compared to acrylic. Melteca and Goodwood carry a budget friendly range for their products which come in various textures and designs.

Storage is the second most important aspect of a well planned kitchen. Most kitchens in Auckland feature an open plan setting which means that they must have good storage, so the kitchen does not look cluttered.

To create an uncluttered look, think about installing a cutlery drawer, spice racks, pull out bins, magic corners etc. We recommend allocating a substantial part of your budget on your cabinets and storage because you want them to last a long time.

3.What kind of countertop is right for my basic kitchen?

Countertops are another important feature for your kitchen. It is vital to choose a countertop that will be resistant to water, is durable and hard-wearing. There are many options available for budget friendly kitchens and our recommendations are as follows:

    • Laminate countertopsLaminated Countertops is a material that has a lot of different colours and styles. This material is long lasting, stain resistance and has natural heat. Laminate countertops remains one of the top materials in New Zealand when renovating a kitchen. So, why is it one of the top materials? Laminate is a great material for people who wish to renovate their kitchen on a budget as it is $150 per square meter. Laminate does however have its drawbacks as it can be easily stained.
    • Stone EngineeredEngineered Stone is the most popular and common countertop used in Auckland for new kitchens. So what is a stone engineered countertop? A stone engineered countertop simply means that the stone is manufactured in a factory instead of natural stone. The benefits of stone engineered stone is that through technology, manufacturers can manipulate the stone for added benefits like higher durability, better designs and is cost effective. Stone engineered countertops are often made of 90 percent Quartz. This material is a great option for first kitchen renovators as Quarts is affordable and available with a range of variety of textures in New Zealand. Stone engineered is not just durable but comes with 10 years of warranty and is scratch resistant.

    4. What appliances can I get for a basic kitchen?

The first step is to see what appliances you want to upgrade. This can be from stovetop to dishwasher. Here is a tip! However, if your budget does not include high maintenance appliances then do not worry. We have got your back and just think about the existing appliances are working and the other appliances that need more attention. This could help you save a huge amount, and you can use that with other upgrades in your kitchen remodeling.

Appliances are another major factor when thinking about kitchen renovation as they are needed for cooking, baking, warming up, and refrigeration. To stay within your budget, only buy appliances that your really need. If some of your appliances are working well then there is no need to buy new ones.

When picking appliances, see what models have great reviews and only buy good-quality appliances that will last a long time. Having good quality appliances will also increase your house valuation if you do plan to sell your home in the future.

    5. Flooring

Choosing the right type of kitchen flooring is important as kitchens are usually a high traffic area and are prone to food and water spillage. You might want to think about the texture of the material you choose as a good kitchen flooring should be easy to clean, hard-wearing, and water-resistant, (hard for water to get through). There are four great options for a basic new kitchen in NZ:

    • Linoleum FloorsLinoleum flooring is a natural eco-friendly material. It does however need regular maintenance and might not be suitable for families with young children. For instance, Linoleum flooring is likely to get damage because of the moisture in the water and, will wear off with time. Linoleum can also make a home look dated so it might not be a great option for everyone.
    • Luxury VinylAs technology has developed, the properties of vinyl have also improved. Luxury Vinyl is a type of vinyl that is more durable than regular vinyl. There are also a lot more options available in terms of textures and designs. It is a budget friendly option for kitchens as it is quite inexpensive compared but need more maintenance compared to tiles.
    • Laminate FloorsLaminate flooring is more durable and water resistant compared to Linoleum and vinyl flooring. The Flooring is a laminated wood face floor that looks and feels like wooden floors. Laminate flooring comes in various textures and designs which means that it looks great in open plan kitchens due to their aesthetic element. They can be made to look and feel like wood which is great for people who want a wooden floor look. Laminated floors are a cheaper alternative compared to wood floors. They are also easier to maintain compared to wooden floors as they can be made to be 100% waterproof.
    • Ceramic and Porcelain TilesCeramic and porcelain tiles are also a good cost effective tiles for basic kitchens. They are easy to clean, are durable and water resistant. You will also have a great variety of textures to choose from which means that you will be a able to create a beautiful kitchen for the fraction of the cost. They can however be cold on your feet in winter and can cause foot fatigue if stood on for too long. To combat this you can put soft rugs which are warmer and more comfortable for your feet.

    6. Lighting

Natural lighting is important for a kitchen to showcase its beauty as well as for cooking, preparing, cleaning, and hosting parties. Upgrading your current light fixtures with new ones will not cost you a lot.

You can also completely do away with wall lights and opt for LED lights on the ceiling. You can install energy saving LED lights which will also help you keep your energy bill low. To add to the aesthetics of your kitchen, you can also use pendent lighting above the island if you have one.

    1. How much does it cost to change the layout for a mid-range level kitchen in NZ?

Changing the layout of your kitchen means that you might want to change the plumbing as well as electric wiring in the kitchen. 2. Cabinets, Doors, and handles

When renovating a mid-range new kitchen remodel cost in NZ , you will have a lot more choice in materials, textures and designs for your cabinets and door handles.

The material that you would be using at this level would be MDF Melteca. MDF Melteca is surface that most kitchen remodels use in New Zealand. Melteca has various ranges of materials and it is highly popular in NZ as it is affordable, easy to clean and highly durable.

You could choose a more premium range of MDF for your cabinets. We work with Melteca and Goodwood brands to custom built all cabinets. You can use Melteca’s high gloss premium range for your mid-range kitchen.

You can also customise your MDF cabinets by wrapping it with Dezignatek Thermoform with any pattern you like to create a traditional, vintage, classic or modern look. For example the cabinets below were wrapped with a Rhonda pattern to give them a vintage look.

    • The front of the drawers and cabinets were wrapped in Dezignatek Thermoform with a ‘Ronda’ pattern to give the cabinets a vintage look.

If your budget allows then you can also custom-build cabinets made of real wood but they are often very hard to maintain and hence MDF remains a popular choice for kitchen cabinets.

    3. Door handles and Blumotion

Our mid-range kitchens often feature soft close cabinets and hinges from Blum and Hafelle. Soft close cabinets are drawers from BLUM allow your cabinets to close softly and without any effort even if they are slammed shut. This feature is great for homes with young children or when you have a busy day in the kitchen.

Hinges from Hefelle and Blum will also last you longer as they are very durable due to their superior technology and will not rust.

If you are going for a modern or contemporary look then you can also opt for a no-handle set up with LED lights above them. This will give you a seamless and uncluttered look especially if you have a small open plan kitchen.

If you want a cottage style or traditional style kitchen then you can also install brass handles to give it a more vintage feel. To give it a cleaner and more classic look you can also install matte knobs against white cabinets for contrast.

    4. Storage for a kitchen makeover NZ

When taking about cabinetry, we talked about the way your cabinet looks and how it feels but now let us talk about the storage inside your kitchen. Having good kitchen storage is an important feature of a functional kitchen.

Kitchen storage can be useful to store dry foods, small appliances, cutlery, pots, pans, plates etc. Most homeowners like to store their things in places like in the panty, drawers, shelves, or their kitchen island. Check out this link for more comprehensive ways to organise your cabinets

6 ways to maximise storage for your mid-range kitchen

    1.Magic corners
magic corners can be created for cabinets that are in the corner of your kitchen. They allow you to reach the corner space inside your cabinets which are often hard to reach. Most of our clients prefer using magic corners from BLUM.

    2.Cutlery drawers and spice racks
due to our busy lifestyles, it is important that our kitchen is always well organised. You can get custom built drawers with compartments for your cutlery and spice racks. Also remember to put your cutlery drawer next to your crockery drawer and as a top drawer. Also ensure that your spice rack is next to the stove, so it is easy to access them when you are cooking.

    3.Custom build condiment drawer
You can also make a custom built condiment drawer which pulls out. For example, if you see the condiments drawer below, it does not have any cabinet planks on either side which makes it easy to view your condiments when cooking. This saves time and energy when looking for what you have in your shelves.

    4.Pantry with pull out drawers

it might not be possible to make a walk in pantry for a mid-range kitchen but that does not mean that you cannot have a well organised pantry. This a great feature for homeowners who seek extra storage for their dry foods, carbs, sauces etc. The pull out drawers is located inside the pantry and this feature is very useful when customising your drawers as it helps you to be organised and it helps you find what you are looking easily.

    5.Pull out bins

Pull out rubbish and recycling bins cab be installed within a cabinet which makes your space more hygienic as there are no extra bins on the floor. It also helps the area look uncluttered and cumbersome. Remember to install your pull out bins near your sink area because, it will be easier for you to throw extra waste or recycle their empty products.

    6.Island which doubles as storage

Another option for a mid-range kitchen is to add a kitchen island. A kitchen island can be incorporated within layouts like U-shape, L-shape or even a galley, depending, on the space you have left for family entertainment or preparing food. An island can also be used in multiple ways in your kitchen, for instance, you can have extra storage underneath your island with drawers, you can have a stovetop or even a sink in the middle of your island. Another way to customise your kitchen island is to have a waterfall edge for your countertop or have your exposed countertop hanging off the edge, so that can leave space for your bar chairs. In fact, to renovate a kitchen island is going to cost you between $4,000 to $6,000.

    5.Kitchen Countertops

In New Zealand, renovation companies recommend homeowners to invest in Engineered stone countertop as they are affordable, durable, resistant to water, anti-bacterial and hard-wearing.

For a mid-range kitchen, you will be able to afford a stone engineered countertop of a more superior quality and design.

Luxury Engineered stone countertops are made from crushed marble and granite as it is a popular choice. You can choose a countertop with either sparkles ingrained within it or with ingrained designs or an overhang island for a luxurious look. You also choose to have a thicker countertop with waterfall edges for a contemporary look. If you have a thicker countertop then it will cost, you more than if you choose a less thick countertop.

If your budget allows then you can choose a natural granite countertop which is more expensive than engineered stone. You can also install a real timber countertop, but this will have to be treated before installation. We would not recommend this countertop for people who have busy lives as a timber countertop needs to be maintained regularly.

    Insert cottage kitchen photos

    Splashbacks

Splashbacks are important as they catch any splatters made while cooking and also prevents from damaging the paint of your walls. Splashbacks are often installed above the stove top and sink area.

Tiles, mosaic tiles and glass tiles are three great material options when choosing a backsplash for your kitchen. Ruth from Tile Depot recommends using the Tribecca collection of tiles for splashbacks as it instantly elevates the look of your kitchen. Tribecca tiles look like handmade tiles which look textured but are actually very easy to clean.

    6. Essential Kitchen appliances cost for a mid-range level kitchen renovation in NZ.

When choosing your kitchen appliances, make sure your appliances are position in a way that is most convenient to you when preparing food or cleaning up. For instance, install your dishwasher next to your sink so your cleaning process will be easy. Another example is having your fridge between your stove and sink as you will be able to grab things much faster. Positioning your oven underneath your stove or place it at a closer distance to your cooktop. This is because when cooking or cleaning, the oven bar can come in your way and it will make it harder for you to move around, cleaning can also be a challenge if the oven is above or below eye level. Instead place your oven at eye-level to make cleaning easier and it can also be convenient when taking things in and out of the oven.

Choose your appliances well and check their energy star rating before making the purchase. Choose energy star rated products because it helps reduce your energy bill, they have a longer lifespan and come with an extended warranty. Unlike in a basic kitchen renovation, you will be able to change all your appliances to new ones.

Our mid-range kitchen renovation clients often use SMEG, Samsung, and Bosch for their appliances as this fit in easily with their budget. A freestanding mid-range oven from SMEG will cost you between $25000 – $4,000 if you are buying through a renovation company. This free standing oven often has a gas top, a warmer and single oven.

IMG_0841 New Kitchen Remodel Cost in NZ: Basic, Mid-Range & Luxury (2023)

SMEG dishwasher used in a West harbour for a Mid-range kitchen renovation
    • Bosch is another great brand for stovetops, ovens dishwashers, waste disposal, and rangehoods. Bosch is a more cost effective brand compared to SMEG and is very durable. You can expect to spend around $414 for microwaves, $1150 for modern ovens, and $1500 stain steel fridges.
    • SMEG has an extensive range when it comes to price and makes appliances for mid to high range kitchen renovations. SMEG appliances are more suited for people who want a designer element in their kitchen. They come in various designs and styles to suit most tastes.

If you want a seamless and clean look then you can hide your appliances by building cabinet doors on top of them. This can be done by building cabinet doors on top of the appliances. However, only certain brands and appliances will be compatible enough to build cabinet doors on. We will not recommend you build hideaway ovens and microwaves as they can be a health and safety hazard.

    7. Kitchen Flooring

Your kitchen should ideally be staining free, waterproof, and easy to clean, comfortable and, most importantly, hard-wearing. You will have a lot more options to choose from for a mid range kitchen as compared to basic kitchens.

    • Tilesare often a popular choice for Kitchen flooring as they are easy to maintain and durable. Ceramic and Porcelain tiles remain popular for kitchen floors as they are versatile and come in various designs and textures.
    • Porcelain tiles are better recommended for kitchens as they are more durable and harder to damage. They are more expensive than ceramic tiles, but you will get a lot more design options for porcelain tiles. Porcelain can be made to mimic stone and wood which can elevate your kitchen design.

Tiles can however be cold in winter or hard on your feet when you are cooking for long periods of time. To combat this, you can either install underfloor heating or put some soft rugs on your kitchen.

    • Luxury Laminate Flooring is also another option for kitchen flooring. They are warmer than tiles but are not water resistant which could be an issue with maintenance. If you are installing laminate flooring, then make sure that you wipe away any water spills immediately.
    • Hybrid Neptunehas a new range of kitchen flooring called the stone polymer composite. This hybrid flooring is great for mid-range kitchens as it has all the best properties of stone and laminate. The stone used in Limestone and the Neptune SPC is water resistant, warm, soft on the feet, and muffles the sound of your footstep.

Ruth from Tile depot says that this is a much better alternative compared to tiles or laminate and does not require any underfloor heating. It is also very durable and comes in many finishes. It will also not get damages due to sun or extreme cold weather.

    8. Smart Kitchen features and Lighting

Good lighting is necessary in a kitchen as it needs to be a bright space as most of the cooking and entertaining happens here. You can use recessed lighting on the ceilings as well as LED lights above splashback, underneath cabinets and door handles which can be dimmed or made brighter in accordance with the mood you want to create.

You want lights that are low heat emission and longer lifespan. LED lights gives your new kitchen a nice medium tone of light. It is recommended that we should not get lights that are not so bright or dim, just in the middle as the lights have a large impact on us and our guest.

You can also add sensor lighting and blue tooth lighting which can be switched on and off through the command of your voice. You can also change the colour of these lights with the help of your phone, remote or voice. You can also add pendent lighting above your islands or dining area to create further depth in your kitchen design.

The biggest difference in mid-range and luxury kitchens is that in luxury kitchens your budget allows you to incorporate high end and premium materials.

Do check our table above to see what other things include in a high-end kitchen and, read our pervious article on how much does it cost to renovate a kitchen in NZ in 2021?

    1. Hiring a kitchen designer for your layout

When you are building a high-end kitchen, you have the freedom to customise your kitchen from start to end. This is where you will hire a kitchen designer and they will advise you on what materials, colours and what your style will look like by creating 3D models and renderings.

Layout is very important when it comes to interior designer because they need design accordingly to the plumbing points and electric wiring for cooktops. However, when renovating a luxury kitchen, you have the flexibility or changing your plumbing and rewiring to suit the layout you want.

Storage and countertop benches are the most essential things when renovating a new kitchen.

Check out some top 5 crucial tips that Dorothy (our in-house kitchen designer) has recommended:

    1. Plumbing and Electrical Ports If you are trying to keep your kitchen renovation cost at a lower end of your budget then do not move your wiring and plumbing as this will significantly increase costs. Keep your stove and sink in the same position that it is currently in.
    2. Advice on materials– A kitchen designer will also help you understand more about the renovation materials that you can incorporate in your kitchen design. They will help your combine different materials, textures and colours to create a beautiful kitchen. Due to their industry experience they will have knowledge about the innovation in materials and what is more suited for your family’s needs.
    3. Space planning and work triangle – When designing your kitchen layout from scratch, you might want to think about the foot space in your kitchen. Your kitchen designer will design your kitchen layout in accordance to the work triangle.

    Superior article about layouts: https://superiorrenovations.co.nz/kitchen-layout-planning-guide-to-achieving-a-good-kitchen-design/

A work triangle measures how effectively your kitchen is planned. It makes sure that there is a clear pathway from your stove to the cleaning area and your refrigerator. This triangle should have no other foot traffic in its pathway. You want to be able to comfortably work in your kitchen.

    1. Appliances should be close by when moving around the kitchen like your sink should be opposite your stove or oven, microwave, or dishwasher.
    2. Storage planningYour kitchen design should include designated areas for storing all your cookware, spices, large appliances, and crockery. This will determine how you built your cabinets throughout your kitchen. For example, if you are storing your large appliance like a bread maker or a mixer in the left side of your kitchen then you have to make sure that the cabinet has the space and height to fit them. If you do not plan your designated storage areas then you might have a kitchen that can either not fit your appliances or have space that is wasted.
    3. Kitchen islands Luxury kitchens often feature kitchen islands in their kitchen designs. If you do not have space for a kitchen island, then you can explore the option of knocking some walls down to expand the space of your kitchen.

kitchen islands are a great addition for your kitchen as they give you extra counter space for food preparation and are a great entertainment area. You can also add two islands if you have a large kitchen area. Just like mid-range kitchens you can add extra cabinets, put a stove top, and add bar stools.

To hire a kitchen designer, you will be spending around $6,900 or between $138 to $276 per hour in New Zealand.

Customised Cabinets, Cabinet features and Joinery

    2. Customised Cabinets, Cabinet features and Joinery

    Cabinets

Luxury kitchen cabinet doors are made from high-end quality materials which start from $2,070 per linear foot. When you are planning to renovate a high-end kitchen renovation, then think about getting materials that will last longer and have design features.

Depending on what type of style you want for your kitchen, you have the freedom to customise your cabinetry options to either modern, traditional, contemporary, classic, cottage style or industrial.

    • Natural wood like Timber is a great option for your cabinet doors and drawers. You will have to make sure that it is treated so that it is not easily damaged. They have a natural beauty that gives it a will make your kitchen timeless. Depending on the wood you choose, you will be able to incorporate various hues like oak, maple, pine etc.

Pro tip: If you are using natural wood for your cabinets then make sure that they are treated and polished every 1-2 years to ensure longevity.

    • Porcelain tiles on MDF (neolith) can be installed on your MDF cabinet boards to create a feel of luxury on your cabinet and drawer doors. Neolith is one of our preferred suppliers for porcelain tiles as they have an extensive range in textures and colours. Attaching porcelain tiles on MDF boards allows us to create designer kitchens in various styles. For example, you can use porcelain tiles that look and feel of cement to create an industrial style kitchen. Cabinets with Porcelain tiles require very good quality joinery and hinges to support the heavy weight of the porcelain tiles. We will discuss more about joinery a bit later in the article.

Pro tip: Cabinets with porcelain tiles attached on them will last you a long time. They will not be worn out easily and are great for families with kids. They can be heavy so you will have to choose your joinery and hinges carefully.

    • Lacquer on MDF

has been a popular choice for luxury kitchen cabinets because of its extensive range in colours and styles. Lacquer cabinets have 2 coats of paint applied to your cabinets with a high gloss finish. They are an expensive choice because you need a specialised skill set to create these cabinets. While they are waterproof to an extent, they should be regularly maintained as prolonged contact with water can warp them. They are also prone to fading if they are in contact with direct sunlight too often. They might have to be repainted every 5-10 years depending on its wear and tear.

Pro tip: If you have children in your household then we would recommend not using lacquered cabinets as they are prone to superficial scratches which will compound over time.

    • Timber Veneer

is basically manufactured wooden veneers which are attached on your MDF carcass. We often work with Bestwood and Melteca for wooden veneers as our clients can choose from an extensive range in colours, textures, and patterns for their kitchen cabinets. Luxury timber veneers like the woodgrain range from Melteca are a great alternative compared to natural wood as they are made to be more durable and require less maintenance. They emulate wood in how they feel and look but can also be manipulated to the exact look that you require which is often hard with natural wood.

    • MDF Vs Plywood Vs Particle board for your carcass

Plywood and MDF are a better choice compared to particle board for the carcass of your cabinets as they are more water resistant and are much sturdier. We recommend using Plywood for your carcass when creating cabinets under your cleaning or sink area. This is because plywood is more water resistant compared to MDF. You can however use MDF for the rest of the cabinets in your kitchen. MDF and plywood have similar qualities when it comes to aesthetics and durability.

    Details on your cabinets

You can also add crown moulding on your cabinets if you are going for classic or traditional kitchen design. You can also adorn your panels with wainscoting if you want a classic or cottage style kitchen. We often wrap Dezignatek Thermoform on cabinets to create patterns and designs on kitchen and drawer drawers.

For more traditional kitchen designs you can also create corbels and crown moulding on your cabinets to give a more furniture like look.

    Joinery

We use BLUM for all our joinery and hinges because they are one of the best in terms of quality and innovation. Blum also has hinges and joinery in darker and lighter shades so a seamless design can be achieved whether you have dark or lighter shade cabinets.

    Types of joinery we recommend:

    1. Soft close cabinets and drawers: Soft close cabinets are great as no matter how hard you bang your cabinet doors; they will close softly without any sound. This also prevents wear and tear to your cabinets, and this will prolong their lifespan.
    2. Tip on Blumotion: These drawers will open automatically when you press them. In order to close them you just have to push them hard, and they will close softly. No matter the style of kitchen your kitchen, this technology will improve the way you use your kitchen.
    3. Pull out systems: Pull out systems allow you to open your cabinet upwards as opposed to traditionally opening on the sides.
    4. BLUM Legrabox: This type of drawer system is designed so your runners are not visible and gives a sleek look to your drawers which works very well for contemporary, industrial, and modern kitchen designs.
    5. Pull out pantry drawer system: This custom built pantry system boasts a pantry with pull out drawers with clear sides so it is easy to organise your pantry and your pantry items are easily visible.

Hinges that can support more weight:

If your kitchen cabinets have porcelain tiles attached on their MDF board then your cabinet doors and drawers will be heavy. To support these heavy doors and drawers, you will have to make sure that the hinges can support them. BLUM makes hinges that can support up to 70kgs which is suitable for heavy cabinetry.

As discussed above, planning your storage is important before even building your kitchen cabinets. This is because certain cabinets might need runners that can support more weight compared to others. For example, drawers and cabinets with heavy appliances and crockery will need runners that can support more weight compared to ones that will have your cutlery.

    3. What are my options to organise my kitchen storage?

You can get your standard storage like magic corners, cutlery drawers and pull out condiment drawers. However, with a luxury kitchen you have the flexibility to change the layout of your kitchen in a way that you can create a butler’s pantry.

    • Butler’s pantry/ kitchen

A butler’s pantry is especially good for homes that have an open plan kitchen and for people who love entertaining guests. The butler’s pantry usually is a small room that is connected to the kitchen where you can either prepare your food or make mess in private without making your main kitchen dirty. You can also store your big appliances and dry food or install a sink to wash your dishes at a later stage.

Picture-5 New Kitchen Remodel Cost in NZ: Basic, Mid-Range & Luxury (2023)

    • Walk in pantry or pull out drawer pantry

If you do not have a very large kitchen then opt for a small walk in pantry instead. A walk in pantry is just another form of a walk in wardrobe. You can create a large cupboard with shelving where you can install a sensor light to easily view your dry food items. If this is not an option, then you can custom built a pantry with pull out drawers.

    4. Natural stone Countertops and Designer Splashbacks

    Countertops:

    1. Granite and Marble

    • Natural stones like marble or granite are two popular high-quality materials that designers recommend using on your countertop or kitchen island. Granite will cost you around $4000 to $7000. Marble on the other hand with cost rom $10,000 to $15,000 if you are using it for an island as well as all your countertops.
    • Natural stones are popular because they exude a natural beauty which surpass the beauty of any stone engineered countertops. They have natural patterns that are unique to each slab and hard to engineer.

    2. Concrete

    • Concrete is also an option for islands, but it is a lot harder to work with. As concrete countertops can be very heavy, they pose a set of technical challenges which means that they should be manufactured and installed by renovation companies that have experience working with concrete.
    • If you do want a concrete countertop for your island or countertops your countertops must be supported by steal beams as other materials will not be able to support the weight of concrete. Concrete is usually used in contemporary or industrial style kitchens.

    3. Mix different textures, materials, and finishes

    • Dorothy from our design department suggests using a combination of different stones, glass, and other materials with various textures and colours to create some depth in your kitchen design. You can also combine different finishes for different materials to give a truly luxurious feel.

    Splashbacks and Feature Walls

Splashbacks are essential for your cooking and cleaning area. Our designers recommend our clients to not get textured splashbacks as they can be very hard to clean. The good news however is that there is an extensive range for easy to clean splashbacks to choose for a luxury kitchen.

    1. Use a single slab of tile or marble- Cici, our in house designer recommends using one single slab of marble as a splashback for a clean look. Using a custom cut one piece of tile also means that you will have no grout lines which means that clean up will be easy.

    2. Tribeca collection from Tile depot- Ruth from Tile depot said that bright tiles or handmade looking tiles are very popular as splashbacks and feature walls. The 2021 Tribeca collection features premium tiles that look textured and handmade but are in fact manufactured in a way that they have a smooth surface which is easy to clean, making it a perfect choice for splashbacks.

TIP: You can also opt at choosing a glass splashback or any other form of tiles. It is better to choose

    Feature walls

Feature walls are great to add a different dimension and create more interest to your kitchen. There are several ways that you can create a feature wall in your kitchen. You can add a feature wall by painting a wall in a bold contrasting colour, adding tiles or a wall with plant creepers.

If you are using tiles then you can install either woodgrain tiles, mosaics, or textured tiles on the wall to create more depth to your kitchen. If you do not want a whole wall of tiles then you can also create accents with mosaics like a horizontal strip of mosaics on a plain wall.

    5. Designer appliances to complement your designer kitchen

As we talked above, getting energy star appliances are better for the environment, they will use less electricity, have a longer warranty and are more durable.

When purchasing your appliances, think about the overall style of your kitchen and get appliances that complement your overall kitchen design. You can also opt for hiding your appliances inside your cabinetry which is done by attaching the material of your cabinet on the surface of your appliances. This is great if you are going for a clean and sleek look for your kitchen.

For a modern and contemporary feel, opt for stainless steel rangehood with 6 or 8 gas hobs and stylish hood. You can also buy a smart steel fridge with double doors, a separate freezer, water dispenser and an ice maker. You can also either purchase a wine fridge or custom built a wine storage area.

    1. Style options for kitchen appliances

SMEG and Bosch are two brands that are often used in designer kitchens because not only are they of superior quality, but you also have a lot of design options to choose from.

    2. Traditional kitchen appliance ideas

If the overall design of your kitchen is traditional or cottage style, then try and purchase appliances that complement this style. Buy a large standalone gas cooktop with an oven and complement this with a matching hood. If you are going for a retro theme, then you can also use the retro appliances range designed by SMEG

    6. Luxury Flooring options for designer kitchens in New Zealand

You want a flooring that is soft on your feet, durable, low in maintenance, beautiful and does not echo when you walk on it. The two best type of flooring for your kitchen are tiles and Stone based composite polymer.

    • Stone based composite polymer is a new hybrid flooring option in New Zealand which is 100% waterproof which makes it a great option for kitchen floors. It is also softer and warmer on the feet as compared to porcelain tiles. They are also a great option for second floor kitchens as they do not echo as much as tiles. They are not as expensive as natural stone tiles and can also be used for mid-range kitchens as well as for designer kitchens.
    • Porcelain Tiles are more durable and waterproof than ceramic tiles but can feel cold in winter. If you are installing porcelain tiles in your kitchen then we do recommend clients to either install underfloor heating or put kitchen rugs during winter. The advantage of porcelain tiles is that they are easy to clean, are durable and have an extensive design range. We recommend using large format tiles 1200 by 900 or 600 by 900 for your kitchen floors for a more continuous and seamless design.

Porcelain tiles can also be made to look like cement, wood or any other natural stone which makes them a versatile choice for most people.

    7. What is the best lighting for my Luxury Kitchen?

A brightly lit kitchen is a must as it is the centre of most of our activities in a home. We prepare our food, have our coffee, and often entertain guests/family in the area. Adding good lighting to your kitchen is not as simple as adding a few light bulbs on the walls or ceilings. Lighting goes beyond just having visibility in the kitchen. A well lit kitchen should make it easier for you to do your prep work with precision, it should be easy for you to stow and retrieve items in shelf and should make your kitchen look welcoming and spacious.

Incorrect installation of lights can in fact make your affect the appearance of your kitchen negatively.

Plan your kitchen lighting based on 3 distinct layers which serve a separate function.

    1. Lighting to carry out tasks

    • This is the general lighting which is needed to make your overall kitchen visible. This light should make cooking, cleaning, preparing food and navigating easy. One of the aims for this lighting is to make it easier to carry out your tasks.
    • So, think about the areas that you need to carry out these tasks. Install lights above your kitchen island to make preparation work easier. Install LED lights below your top cabinets so it illuminates your countertop, at the top end of your splashback and near the handles of all cabinets and drawers.
    • You should also add either LED ceiling lights or ceiling bulbs, so your entire kitchen is illuminated.

Tips of installing your Task lights

Tasks lights should be positioned directly above your sink, island, countertop, or other space where you carry out cooking tasks. Install the LED light strips under your upper cabinets and above the handles of your lower cabinets.

    2. Ambience lighting

    • This type of lighting creates a soft mood in your kitchen. This could either be lighting that can be made dimmer, or it could be in the form of pendant lighting on top of your kitchen island.
    • There are several design options available for pendant lighting so you will have plenty of options to choose from depending on the style of your kitchen. If your space allows then you can also install a chandelier. Recessed lighting can be installed on your ceiling or any opening like seen in vaulted ceilings.

    Tips on installing ambient lighting

Ambient lighting should have a direct path to the floor of your kitchen. If you do not have an island, then install a chandelier directly above your floor or directly on top of your island. If you are installing recessed lights, then position them at half the distance of the distance of your floors and ceilings. Also avoid creating shadows on your countertops by installing the recessed lighting above the countertop and not at the edge of it. The same concept would apply to semi flushed and flushed lighting.

    1. Accent Lighting

    • This type of light usually highlights a design feature in your kitchen. This could either be a feature wall or architectural feature in your kitchen. This is great especially in open planned kitchens where your kitchen is visible for the living and dining area. You could also but accent lights in glass cabinets with fine China or crockery.

If you have a vaulted ceiling or any other ceiling feature that you want to highting then you can install cove lighting which basically means that they light is built into your ceiling. You can also install soft low profile lighting inside your cabinets.

    Tips on installing Accent lighting

Think art galleries when installing accent lights especially if you are trying to highlight a feature wall. You can also put lights inside your cabinets with the light installed above the crockery or decorative items in the glass cabinets.

    8. Electric work and SMART Kitchen features

If you are renovating your entire kitchen then chances are that you will be rewiring your kitchen. This is especially true if you are changing the layout of your kitchen because then you will have to switch all the plug points around. You can also add smart features to your kitchen that will improve the way you use your kitchen.

Ideas to incorporate SMART features in your kitchen design

    • SMART appliances like a refrigerator that dispense water of any temperature that you like
    • A hot water tap so you do not have to boil water every time you need boiling water while cooking.
    • SMART home systems can be integrated within the design so you can control the light or the dimness of lights with your phone.
    • SMART lighting controlled by Bluetooth where you can set a time that you come home and it will automatically switch the lights on for the time that you get home.
    • SMART fridge that has cameras inside the fridge which can be connected to your phone. This way you can check what items you have run out of and get them on the way from work.
    • Sensor ovens which can sense that the food or meat is cooked and it will automatically switch off or set off an alarm so you will never burn or overcook a meal.
    • Plug points with a USB port so you can charge your phone while cooking
    • Sensor lighting that will switch the lights on automatically when you enter the kitchen
    • Range hoods that will automatically switch on at a certain fan speed suited to the type of cooking that is taking place.

    To Summarise,

The cost for a new kitchen remodel in NZ depends on what type of style you want your kitchen to be. Whether it is a vintage, cottage, classical, modern or a traditional kitchen style, also depends on the special kitchen features that you have upgraded from your previous kitchen like,

    • Better quality materials for countertops, cabinets, splashbacks
    • Energy star rated appliances.
    • Change in Layout- adding a kitchen island or walk in pantry.
    • Customise your kitchen cabinets doors and storage.

We recently had our bathroom renovated by Superior Renovations and couldn’t be happier with the experience. Dorothy and Neil were an absolute pleasure to work with. They guided us through every step of the process, making what can be a stressful experience feel smooth and straightforward.
The quoting process was transparent and detailed, with no hidden fees or surprises. Neil was incredibly responsive and always available whenever we had questions or requests, which gave us real peace of mind throughout the project. We really love the end result and enjoy our new bathroom!
We’ll definitely be returning to the Superior Reno team for our next project. Highly recommended!

Our bathroom reno has just been completed & I am so happy. The whole process was easy & hassle free. Alison designed our bathroom & was very patient with our changes/then changes back again. Jacob our project manager was a delight to deal with. He always kept us informed of the scheduling & any other information we may have needed. All the tradies worked hard & the job was completed & signed off within 3 weeks. That's demo, full tiling, installation of new everything & delivery & pick up of the skip down a very tricky driveway. We absolutely love the new bathroom & would recommend Superior Renovations everyday. Future jobs I will definitely be contacting them again. Thank so much for your excellent work

Now we have signed the second contract with them to continue our journey on renovations.

We have been working with Superior Renovations as a supplier now for over three years. In that time we have found the team to be very professional and well organised. Which is a welcome relief in this industry! Just recently we have become their sole supplier for portaloos, which recognises the collaboration we have forged over these three years.

In particular, Leanne and Elaine set a very high standard of communication and flexibility. This is of vital importance when scheduling deliveries and pickups with us, however, they understand not everything can be done at once and are willing to work with us for the best (supplier/contractor/client) outcome.

I would imagine this ethos would flow directly through to all their contracted renovation work. A pleasure to work with!

Finding someone reliable for renovations has always been the most stressful thing for us. In the past, we had several painful renovation experiences—money was spent but the problems were never truly solved, and things often ended up worse than before. We really didn’t know where to find a trustworthy renovation company.

For more than ten years, our wish had been to renovate our bathroom, laundry, and toilet, so that we could finally enjoy a comfortable and functional living environment. Just when we were about to give up, we came across Superior Renovations online. We quickly made an appointment with Cici, who designed and provided us with a quote.

Throughout the whole process, I was deeply impressed by the professionalism of Superior Renovations. What stood out most was that they always delivered on their promises—everything agreed upon was completed on time. This built a relationship of trust and reliability. Up until completion, I was completely satisfied with their dedication and the quality of their workmanship.

During the renovation, we encountered some of the challenges that often come with older houses, but Cici and her team helped us resolve the discomforts we had been living with for years. We are truly grateful to the construction team.

Some say renovations are easy if you just have money, but I believe the most important thing is finding a trustworthy team that keeps their word, values quality, and cares about the customer’s experience.

Because of this renovation experience, we can now confidently plan our next project—the kitchen—and Superior Renovations will definitely be our first choice. We strongly recommend them.

Finally, I want to thank Cici and the team for helping us fulfill our dream.

We will definitely be calling on you guys again for our next home reno. Thanks team!

We’re very happy with the renovation work done by the team. It’s rare for renovation projects to finish on time, but they committed to completing ours before the Easter holiday—and they delivered! Our project manager, Jacob, worked incredibly hard (even physically! 😄) to make it happen.

I admit I might not have been the easiest client—I was particular about details like colours, tile placement, and exactly where the hand basin bowl should sit on the bench. But they listened, took it all on board, and got it done. Thank you, Jacob!
I’ll definitely bring you another challenge in the future. 😉

Absolutely thrilled with the outcome of our renovation of two bathrooms and kitchen in a double level home. Kevin and his entire team were an absolute pleasure to work with from the get-go. Every minor detail was attended to, and all our requests were accommodated. Cyrus deserves a special mention as under his watchful eye and expertise, nothing could go wrong.

I have recently finished a renovation in our 1930’s bungalow, updating the original (and I do mean original) kitchen and bathroom. Plus creating a new laundry and removing three fireplaces which created two new spaces including an office. From the initial appointment with Alison who came over and then provided drawings and a quotation, to the work with Frank, our project manager and the team, this has been a wonderful renovation experience. I would have described myself as a nervous-renovator prior to doing this, as I had never done a renovation before, but Frank, Alison, Sunny and all the team have worked so tirelessly and generously to create spaces that we love. Superior’s care in managing the project has meant that we have come away with much more than we originally sought to achieve and without the stress I hear others lament about when they renovate. I would recommend Frank, Alison, Sunny and the team at Superior Renovations wholeheartedly.

We engaged with three companies to completely renovate our downstairs and ensuite bathrooms. We elected to go with Superior Renovations as they provided us with a fixed price and specific timeline to complete the project (which two other companies could not do), and we were absolutely delighted with the end result. We love everything from the floor and wall tiles to the heated towel rails and from the LCD mirrors to the underfloor heating and soft close lids. We especially loved replacing the old tub in our ensuite with a walk-in shower.

The entire process went incredibly smoothly, with the project being completed on budget and ahead of schedule. From the initial design phase to the final touches, nothing was too much trouble for the team. Superior Renovations conducted themselves with the utmost professionalism, ensuring every detail was perfect.

Frank (Project Manager) and the team did such an amazing job. Totally professional outfit, top notch communication, all tradies were courteous, polite and respectful. Alex (Builder) was especially knowledgeable and offered great solutions as minor issues unfolded. Each stage of the renovation was completed on the day it was scheduled. The crew were always on time and mindful of our work from home arrangements. And I was also impressed with the floor protection that was laid out on the first day.

Through no fault of Superior, we did encounter a major, unforeseen setback that delayed our renovation on the downstairs bathroom. Superior were patient with us while we sourced specialists to remedy the issue. But once that was all sorted, Frank and the team picked up the baton and charged ahead to the finish line, delivering two beautifully ‘superior’ bathrooms. We also experienced a minor electrical issue post-build. And even though it was unrelated to their renovation work, Frank promptly dispatched an electrician who quickly fixed the problem. Talk about above and beyond!

In summary, we highly recommend Superior Renovations for anyone looking to undertake bathroom renovations in their home. We’re already talking about renovating the kitchen next and we’re so confident in Superior Renovations that we will most certainly be engaging with them to complete the task.

A huge thank you to Frank, Alex and all the wonderful team at Superior Renovations:)

We have just recently completed a renovation project with Superior Renovations, complete demo and redo of x2 bathrooms, laundry, extension to existing deck, custom cabinets built & new wardrobe system installed.
We have been completely OVERWHELMED and IMPRESSED by the professionalism of the whole team from start to finish. From the initial consultation, visiting the showroom, design team, admin correspondence, project manager and sub-contractors.
We couldn’t be any happier with the final product.
The whole process was extremely well streamlined, we were given timeframes well in advance and informed of any changes.

My wife and I are absolutely delighted with the team at Superior Renovations - and the "superior" job and experience they delivered for us in renovating our ensuite and main bathroom. We are so pleased we chose them for our renovation.

Everyone from Cici the designer, and Frank our wonderful and attentive project manager, down to the team of guys doing the heavy lifting were a real pleasure to deal with. We were kept informed every step of the way and everything was done to a very high standard. Nothing seems too much trouble for your crew (in fact Frank even became quite good at running after and catching our dog when the naughty little boy escaped), and they even helped me out with a couple of small extras around the house at no additional cost.

Their pricing was very fair - no hidden extras, and they are such hard workers! But I think what impressed me most was that everything they promised was done exactly on the day they said it would be done, and at the time they said it would be done. They were a very respectful, friendly team who obviously take immense pride in their work.

Thank you Superior team! Recommend 100%

This place is excellent. The service is fantastic. Eunice was amazing. She is efficient, knowledgeable and professional. Their prices are excellent. We have chosen to go with them for an ensuite renovation.

We have now had the pleasure of Superior completing our ensuite. It's a big WOW from us.

Communication, professionalism, making sure they checked in with us about preferences, quality of workmanship, quality of materials are all 5 stars.

They completed the job early. Payment structure was excellent. The staff were polite and respectful. If there was an issue it got sorted immediately. Follow-up was prompt. There was no lingering to tidy up loose ends. Rubbish taken away immediately. Full respect of our neighbours using a shared driveway with us. Finally Jacob our project manager was the best. He held the job together from beginning to end.

To be honest...we were 'blown away' by how smoothly it all ran.

        Pros:
We engaged with Superior Renovations to renovate our apartment bathroom and overall we were extremely happy with the process and result! Our main point of contact was Cici Zuo who was very friendly and professional. Additionally, our whole apartment building was currently undergoing external renovations and so it was a logistical nightmare having to coordinate our interior work here with what was going on outside. Cici was impressively flexible to all situations and met each challenge with exemplary calmness and poise. I can only give high praise for her efficiency as a project manager. I would also like to extend my admiration to the accounting staff and the renovators. The accounting staff was very efficient and precise. The renovators were very friendly and I was appreciative with how conscientious they were about our apartment. It was clear how much care was taken to ensure our apartment remained undamaged and as clean as possible. At no time did I feel any concern leaving them to work in our apartment.

        - Efficient, conscientious and high-quality construction
        - Clear and precise communication both in documentation as well as interaction with staff
        - Bathroom is gorgeous!

        Cons:
We also engaged with Superior Renovations to construct 2 wardrobes and 2 cupboards in our apartment. The design process was efficient with very clear documentation. However, we found the wardrobes to be quite overpriced compared to other companies we obtained quotes from. My biggest issue was with the somewhat bizarre inability to break down the price. To meet our budget, we requested pricing for each of the 4 structures separately so that we could decide which we would go ahead with and which we would opt out of. For some reason, Cici informed us that they were unable to break down the cost; cost for all 4 wardrobes has to be considered all together. I'm not entirely why this was the case; the explanation didn't make too much sense to me. In the end, we elected to not proceed with any of the wardrobes. On a related note, unlike other renovation companies we engaged with, Superior Renovations did not seem to offer much support in helping us meet our budget. We felt that not much attention was expended to provide us with multiple options to consider so that we can meet our financial requirements. The overall engagement had a "take it or leave it" feel about it and we found that we had to pry to expose alternatives.

        - Pricing was not granular enough
        - Little consideration of budget or assistance towards meeting our budget.
        - No display of pricing including GST

        Conclusion:
If you want your work done fast and done well, Superior Renovations is definitely the way to go. However, if you're a bit constrained with your budget, be prepared to put in some effort yourself to meet it or entirely forgo some options. Overall we were very happy with the entire renovation process and will definitely consider Superior Renovations again in the future for any of our renovation needs! If this does happen, we hope that we have a chance to work with Cici again.

        Update 15/5/2023:
Two months after the completion of the work, unfortunately a leak was discovered coming from the pipe of our renovated ensuite that damaged the walls and ceiling of the apartment directly below us. After investigation, this turned out to NOT be the fault of Superior Renovations' work. Despite this, to facilitate the investigation, Cici was extremely responsive and proactive. Her action was instrumental in determining the cause of the leak. Additionally, post-work, Cici has been very helpful in dealing with some very minor issues. With all this in mind, I felt it was necessary to update my review to once again give my compliments to Cic and the Superior Renovations team. I should also mention that an external plumber who also came to investigate the leak was blown away at the workmanship of the renovation!

How fortunate were we to come across Superior Renovations when we were looking for our home renovations. Out biggest challenge was time management as we wanted to be back in our home as early as possible and due to recent weather events all builders were unable to commit to a timeline. From sales rep Cici to Project Manager Jacob, it was one smooth one window operation. Sticking to original plan, selection of materials at showroom to weekly plan communication and daily updates, it was as best managed as one could hope for. I am extremely pleased with the results and would be recommending it to my mates for any big or small renovation or build job. Well done team !!

We had a wonderful experience using Superior Renovations to remodel two bathrooms in our investment property!

From the moment I met with Kevin, he was incredibly friendly and attentive to our ideas and needs. He really went above and beyond to personalise the project for us.

Throughout the process, Kevin and his project management team were very professional and always took the time to discuss our options and provide helpful guidance. Alison the designer was amazing and really put our minds at ease and visualised what we wanted to create. And the project management team was fantastic too - they were on site every day to oversee everything personally.

The end result is truly outstanding and exceeded our expectations. We are so grateful that we trusted Superior Renovations with our home and can't wait to hire them again for our next remodel project - the kitchen!

We highly recommend them to anyone looking for a great renovation experience.

We choose to use Superior Renovations for our bathroom renovations - the job involved taking the walls and ceiling back to the stud, moving a door and removing in-built cupboards. As this is the main family bathroom the thought of a long process where we were responsible for finding a plumber, builder, electrician and tiler was really daunting. We had one meeting with Cici at Superior Renovations and were impressed by her efficiency and suggestions and how she helped realise any ideas we had. The team completed the job within the expected timeframe, we had a main point of contact (Nick - amazing!) who managed all the teams and kept us up-to-date. The Superior Renovations team all worked really hard and we have an end result of a bathroom that has exceed our expectations. Cannot recommend the team enough - they made the stress of living without a main bathroom both quick and painless!

Also they managed to start the work soon after signing the contract and completed the full house renovation within two months as mentioned in the contract. Superior Renovations project managed by Nick has just finished our new bathroom, separate toilet, and ensuite. Cici made choosing fittings so easy. The team kept me informed of every stage and the project was completed to our satisfaction despite COVID issues. Our bathrooms are now hotel quality and it is a treat to use them everyday!

Superior Renovations recently remodelled my bathroom in Mount Eden and I couldn't be more impressed with their service! I had such an excellent experience right from the start with the quotation process, right through to designing the bathroom and then finally construction. The final result was exactly what I had wanted, and I couldn't speak more highly of the team. Thank you Superior for doing such a great job! I will be using the company again for more renovation work in the future for sure.

I must compliment the Team for an excellent Service and work in completely changing our kitchen (we admire it every day) as it is of the highest quality and made exactly to our requirements.Their team and focus on minutest details is unbelievable.

Over and above - Most importantly Customer Service provided by Cici, Nick, Kyle and their team was awesome. We have not observed such high quality and standards for a very long time. A special mention to their Tiler who did the perfect job with the greatest of details and care.He is a great asset to work for anyone. This team is so pro-active, motivated and sensitive to meet customer aspirations that I would hire them every time needed.

Superior Renovations is a trustworthy renovation company and doing awesome jobs! Although the work is delayed and not easy to go through during covid , the team still
tried their best to meet the needs of ours and completed as fast as they can . I think Superior Renovations shows its professional performance and well customer care service to their customers. Especially a big thank you for Kevin, Sunny, Dorothy and Jimmy for all the help, time and effort you have spent on our project. We really appreciated it and will highly recommend to others.

The team at Superior were awesome! We engaged with Superior Renovations to do a full bathroom renovation which included a full bathroom, en-suite and 2 separate toilets. They were professional, thorough, easy to work with, very responsive and we loved the experience.
The tradies that were used were very good and the work was of an excellent standard. There were a couple of tradies that did not have good english, but that was never an issue as our Project Manager Nick Chen and our Site Manager, Kai Zhang were excellent communicators, very responsive to any questions or concerns and always laid out the plan for each day.
We are absolutely rapt with our bathrooms. We also had our entranceway retiled as part of the job and it looks amazing too. The tiling team that Superior used were brilliant!
I absolutely recommend Superior for anyone wanting to do a bathroom renovation project... you won't be disappointed.

Superior Renovations were amazing. We used them after seeing the amazing job they did with a friend's bathroom. They had a large team of skilled workers who worked long hours to completely renovate our kids bathroom in a little over 4 weeks. Cici was hugely helpful at design stage, by offering really practical and modern design ideas. The project management team were constantly checking on progress and quality and the completed bathroom was delivered on time AND on budget. Nothing was too much trouble and we even received a gift basket and thank you card at handover. We have 2 more bathrooms and a kitchen still to do when funds allow but we wont hesitate to have Superior do these for us.

Superior renovations was AMAZING to deal with. We have completed 3 renovation projects with them in the last 6 months and it's been a dream! Despite challenges with their suppliers, they solved problems to deliver EARLIER than expected in some projects and on time in others. All of their workers are happy, professional, dedicated to excellence and hard working. Kevin has been such a joy to deal with. I never wait more than 5 minutes for him to get back to me. He is always in a great mood, even when he has the weight of the world on his shoulders. We will be using this company for years to come. My only concern is that Kevin works too hard and I hope he looks after himself, but judging by his endless energy, he must be sleeping very well or taking some crazy supplements! HUGE FAN OVER HERE!!!

We had an ensuite bathroom which had chronic water leakage issues. We hired Superior Renovations to demolish the existing bathroom and replace with a new one. We are very happy with the work they did. They explained what needed to be done clearly, and they communicated with us very well about when each team would arrive to do the various tasks. The job took slightly less time than we expected. The workmanship was first class, and the final bathroom is just what we wanted.

Completing my home renovation with Superior Renovations was the most positive and rewarding experience I could wish for with home renovation.

Straight from the design, all the way through the project management and all the works on site both inside the house and the outdoor area were completed with high quality, care and always on schedule.

Superior Renovations delivered as promised on the design, timeframe and the agreed budget.

Fantastic experience with these guys - right from the first consultation where Cici drew us up a design to visualize, right through to completion, Superior Renovations were professional and prompt, with amazing communication all throughout our project. Doing a bathroom renovation is always daunting, but these guys made it so easy and gave us step by step breakdowns of what to expect and what was coming next. The work ethic of their contractors was amazing (working weekends and even into the evening to get the job done!), and if I had any questions (of which I had a LOT!), they answered them quickly and thoroughly. We LOVE the finished product... our bathroom is unrecognizable now! Thank you Nick, Kevin, Cici, Kai and the team :) Looking forward to having you back to do our kitchen next!!

After looking around, we chose Superior Home Renovation to do our kitchen renovations, primarily because they have all the tradies under one umbrella. Hubby and I are both working, we don’t have much time to sort plans from trades people and fit into our schedule, plus we are uncertain which trades people to get to create a quality result. The process we experienced was less stressful, we are communicating with just one person - our Project Manager Jin, who organised everything! From demolition, floor tiling, cabinets & drawers, benchtop, electricians, painters to cleaners. Jin is a very good communicator, he keeps us on the loop about the project, and never missed to answer calls. Every enquiry that we asked during the renovation stages were all answered satisfactorily. He definitely has a ‘Customer Satisfaction’ attribute. Our kitchen was finished within the period given, and have excellently met our expectations. Our family is very happy with the design, quality and functionality of our new kitchen. Jin and his team have gained our trust, and we will contact them again on our next home renovation project. Highly recommended! :)

After obtaining quotes from several contractors in September - we chose Superior Renovations to fully refurbish our 2 x bathrooms, 2 x separate toilets and paint and carpet our garage. Not only were they able to start immediately, their standard of work and impressive work ethic was second to none. On time (actually 1-2 weeks ahead of schedule) and on budget, their professionalism, approachability and constant (and very effective) communication made Kevin and his team an absolute pleasure to work with. We are extremely happy with the result (and the building experience) and would 100% recommend Superior Renovations to all - we will be using them for our next project.
......and we did! Almost exactly one year later to completely remodel our kitchen and half of our downstairs flooring. If anything Kevin and his team have got even better. Less than 5 weeks from signing contracts to full completion. Less than 3 weeks of actual demolition and construction. Amazing work ethic and an excellent quality result. Thank you!

Having never done a renovation before Superior Renovations was outstanding. The professional advice and support of the team made our experience extremely easy and what started out as just an extra toilet turned into a fabulous new bathroom, modern living area , new laundry and then we added a rumpus room for the kids. This was never the intention but our experience was so good we felt comfortable and confident leaving it in the hands of Superior Renovations. They took us on the entire journey , educating and assisting with decisions and having a single point for all the different tradies was a dream and no stress. I can't say enough good things about this company. About six months ago, we purchased an older home in Orewa that needed EVERYTHING replaced,.
After interviewing 6 local companies specialising in renovations, we hired Superior Renovations to re-do our kitchen, laundry and bathroom. And we're so glad we did. From the start, their people gave me the impression that my satisfaction was their number one priority - that any request of mine was reasonable and do-able. During the process, they listened to my ideas, made excellent suggestions where I was lacking in knowledge, and delivered comprehensive plans that incorporated my style and requirements. Michael, our Project Manager, was always patient, kind and professional. Ultimately, the renovations of our rooms were completed on time and within our budget.
We are very happy with the results obtained and everyone that sees our kitchen, laundry and bath just stops, stares, and says "Wow!". In short, this company has outstanding customer service and I would recommend them to anyone looking for renovations to be done. Mary Stuart

I am stoked with my new kitchen! Superior Renovations was great in listening to my requirements and going the extra mile to help me source and identify solutions to meet my needs and design desires. We bounced ideas back and forth until the ideal design and solutions was found.
They organized the plumbing, painting, electrical and builders work that needed to be completed as well as the kitchen cabinetry and included the costs in their quotes which left me stress free! They even helped me find a kitchen sink, fridge, stove, range hood and taps I liked. I was kept informed through out the project of the time frames and activities to be completed. These guys worked long and hard and met all of their deadlines. Where challenges were met, they came to the table and helped find suitable solutions.
Their keen eye for detail and previous experience were most appreciated in identifying what would and won't work. Samples were brought to me throughout the design process allowing me to select my desired choices, colours, designs, patterns. Great team to work with.
Will not hesitate to contact them again when completing further renovations in a year or so.

Kevin and the team did an outstanding job in renovating our 40 year old Villa home. We have worked with many contractors over the last 20 years and Superior Renovations by far is the best. The quality of the workmanship was outstanding and they were always very attentive to my queries. There were people working every day and the project was completed on time as promised. We used Superior Renovations 2 years ago for a smaller bathroom renovation project and they were excellent then as well. Since then we have used other companies for various projects and I can honestly say Superior Renovations quality is second to none - and we still prefer to deal with Superior Renovations and mainly because I trust that they will go the extra mile and will deliver the result above what is expected. In addition, the owner, Kevin and all the sub contractors were very knowledgeable, respectful and friendly to both myself and my family (including my dogs!). I highly recommend Kevin and the team and will use them again for future home renovation projects!

Superior Renovations was recommended to me by my friends, and I'm glad I went with them. I've delayed getting my bathroom renovated because I was worried about all the hassle and headache I may need to deal with, but Kevin made it seem like a breeze - everything felt looked after every step of the way and there was a lot transparency regarding cost and timing. Will be recommending them to friends and family, thanks Kevin and the team!

We were extremely impressed with Superior Renovations. We used them to gut and fully replace our en-suite; plus the installation of a new bath in our teenager’s bathroom. The team’s work ethic was amazing; working long hours to meet the build timeframe and Jimmy was always communicating extremely well. Very happy with the result and we’re looking forward to them tackling our laundry.

Kevin and his team did an amazing job - we are so happy with the results! Nothing was a problem, and the team were approachable and professional. The team are amongst the best craftsmen I've encountered in Auckland, and it shows in the finish of the job. All of the guys showed up on time without fail, worked really hard and communicated every stage of the job. Superior renovations did 5 rooms for us (bathroom, ensuite, 2 toilets and garage) to a very high standard and with no delays. Thank you Kevin, Kai and your team! Hope to work with you again soon

Amazing work ethic and quality result. Thank you!

Kevin and his crew did a great job - they did a complete home renovation for us, i.e. new kitchen, bathroom/s, tiling, carpet, plaster and paint, blinds, lighting, everything. We have a new house and we love it. Any questions or concerns I had were quickly by Kevin and any problems fixed. Nothing was a problem. Would recommend to anyone.
