The perception is that wood is seen as this strong and sturdy material while MDF Board is often viewed as a weak and cheap alternative. We’re going to dive deep into the pros and cons particularly for kitchen renovations, and we’ll also share our take on it. Despite popular belief, wood is not always the superior choice; in some situations MDF Board might be the better material.

While buying kitchen cabinets (or any cabinet for that matter) or renovating the kitchen, homeowners often find it perplexing to choose between MDF vs Wood – but we’re here to break it down.

In simple terms, solid wood is essentially the natural lumber while the MDF is categorized as “engineered wood”. Engineered wood is a mixture of redwood, fibers, veneers, resin, and adhesives.

It’s common in older homes that solid wood is primarily used for the construction of cabinets while MDF is used for specific components such as the door center panels. But there is a good reason why the newer homes, and kitchen manufacturers nowadays are choosing MDF now for cabinetry. Let’s break down on why solid woods is an option.

Why renovators choose solid wood for Kitchen Cabinets

There are many reasons why solid wood is chosen as the primary choice for kitchen cabinets. Here are some of the reasons.

Pros of Solid Wood

1. Strength and Durability

Solid wood is strong and sturdy, that’s why most clients lean towards choosing this when it comes to renovating. It will last a very long time without any issues however keeping in mind that there are many different types of solid wood (some a lot stronger such as Oak)

2. Aesthetics

The look and feel of solid wood definitely stands out, the appeal of solid wood is the colors/textures and patterns it comes in. It also comes in many different variations that will give your kitchen an unique look.

3. Customization

There is ample options for customising wood, there is endless choice of shapes, patterns, and colors you can choose from, and it is custom made to your liking.

4. Value

If you’re a homeowner looking for better pricing for your property, consider adding elements of solid wood to improve the perceived value.

Cons of Solid Wood

Despite having all these advantages over MDF, solid wood is not always the best option, In order words, MDF is often the better choice than solid wood. Here are a few things about solid wood that make it a bad choice.

1. Moisture Damage

Most solid woods are prone to water and moisture damage, especially in an unfinished state and it is not waterproof, also some high-quality wood and endue moisture for longer. To protect the wood, a waterproof finishing usually has to be applied.

2. Warping and Cracking

Solid wood will expand and contract with the change in temperature and humidity (particularly with New Zealand’s ever changing climate) which makes them a poor choice for cabinet door panels. Most solid woods are highly prone to warping and cracking in hostile temperature. The cracks remain visible even if the cabinets are painted. With time, wood makers have developed crafting methods and technologies that minimize warping and cracking.

3. Bug Infestation

Unless you look after it very well, solid woods are highly prone to bug infestation and pest attack. On the other hand, it requires regular maintenance and the right finishing to keep the wood well protected.

Why renovators choose MDF for kitchen cabinets

MDF is short for Medium-Density Fiberboard and it is a type of engineered wood, consisting of thin panels constructed from wood fiber, wax, and resin.

For our kitchen renovations, It is definitely the most popular (by far) alternative to solid wood with its own share of pros and cons (also more cost effective). It is normally considered a better option to plywood for being denser, stronger and more durable. For these reasons, it has almost as many applications as solid wood.

Many of our clients initially tend to look down on MDF Wood with the perception that it is a “cheaper looking” option to solid wood but as we mentioned in the beginning both solid wood and MDF Wood have their advantages and disadvantages.

Before we talk about the pros and cons of MDF Wood, just so you understand, there are varying types of this engineered wood. MDF boards can also vary in terms of size, density glue type, and moisture content. As a thumb rule, thicker and denser MDF boards tend to be costlier.

For those renovating their kitchen, looking for a cheaper alternative to solid wood (once they know the price difference in material) always comes up, but without compromising on sturdiness and resistance, It always leads them to MDF as a compelling option. Let’s take a look at the benefits of choosing MDF over other types of engineered woods.

MDF Cabinet Doors: Pros

1. Warping and Cracking

MDF, like wood, expands and contracts when there are fluctuations in temperature and humidity. But unlike Wood, MDF does not warp. This is because the board, thanks to its structure, moves as a unit. Even with extreme changes in humidity and temperature, you do not have to worry about any damage to the cabinet doors.

2. Smooth Finish

MDF doesn’t have any noticeable grains that are usually found in solid woods, or small imperfections. As a result, they have a smoother finish after the paint is applied.

3. Easy to Customize

There are shaker-style cabinet doors, flat paneled doors, inset doors, raised doors and many more. The ease of customization of MDF boards is to thank for this variety. Because of its structure, MDF Board can be cut and drilled in many different ways without any damage. Available in larger sizes than solid wood. If you have a project that demands a large piece of wood with no joints, MDF is the recommended choice.

4. High Water Resistance

When it comes to water resistance, MDF outperforms wood. In fact, some MDF boards are specifically crafted for bath cabinets and they are made water-resistant.

5. Cost-effective Alternative

The obvious clear winner is MDF is a lot more cost effective and worthwhile (value for money) and with proper maintenance, MDF boards can last as long as some of the solid woods.

MDF Cabinet Doors: Cons

Despite all the pros, MDF cabinet doors aren’t perfect for certain situations. From being susceptible to water to scratches to heat, so MDF cabinets does require extra care – here are some of the cons to pay attention to.

1. MDF cabinet doors aren’t ideal for high temperatures
2. MDF Board does not do very well when exposed to extreme heat as the core materials can get damaged. This is why MDF Board is not a good material for outdoor furniture where it is exposed to the sun continually.
3. Compared to wood or plywood, MDF is considered less strong but not by much – but it is still a consideration. For example, Once the MDF get scratches, it’s usually difficult to repair it.
4. Since MDF consists of fine particles, it may not be great for holding screws in some circumstances.
5. If not sealed properly, MDF can fall prey to water absorption – so the manufacturing process of the MDF (or the brand of it) is important.

Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is a favorite with Superior Renovations clients because it gives them solutions for big design details rather then choosing what looks standard – this gives them endless possibilities/options to play with.

What is MDF Board commonly used for?

For most of our renovations, you’ll commonly find MDF being used for kitchen cabinets. Most kitchen cabinets comprise of both solid wood and MDF elements. MDF Board is usually found on the doors and interior panelling for the following reasons:

• Easier to paint
• Easier to clean
• Does not warp
• Water-resistant

But it is not just the kitchen where you’ll find MDF being used, but we also use it in bathrooms and laundry spaces due to the resistance to moisture/humidity.

Another consideration when you’re deciding materials particularly with MDF is when it is compared to plywood. This is not necessarily a comparison you would do for kitchen cabinets, but in other construction instances choosing a plywood vs MDF may be a choice you need to consider to bring down costs.

Another area where MDF was used in a renovation is used shelving, whether it’s for a bookshelf, kitchen shelving, lounge tv unit, or open wall shelving – it’s popular choice because of the change of colors/styles you can choose. But be careful if you’re using it to place heavy objects as it will sag so normally it is reinforced with solid wood if that is the case.

Our Verdict: Is MDF good for kitchen cabinets?

Our opinion is MDF performs better than solid wood in many areas as mentioned above – although the are benefits to choosing solid wood, the advantages of MDF outweigh it … The main concern surrounding solid wood for cabinets, doors and panelling is it requires consistent care and maintenance.

But when it comes to cabinet doors, we highly recommend MDF, It provides far more benefits than solid wood. If you are in the process of giving your kitchen an upgrade, consider choosing cabinets with MDF doors.

Choosing MDF for your cabinets means they are going to be sturdy and durable – it also makes it a lot easier for you to make decisions during the design process because of the larger range of options. MDF (especially doors and shelves) offer smoother finisher and tougher resistance to humid temperatures which we think is particularly important for Auckland homes.

The following are the kitchen renovation checklists for hiring a renovator.

Are They Local?

When doing kitchen renovations, it is important to work with a local company. This is because local contractors know exactly what’s going on in your local area. They can also complete your renovations faster as their products and workers are sourced locally.

Experience

When renovating your kitchen, it is important to work with a renovator that has experience in kitchen renovations. This will ensure that they are better prepared for any challenges they might face in the course of the project.

Insurance

When hiring a kitchen renovator, it is important to ask for proof of insurance. Any professional kitchen renovator should have insurance which protects him and you against any liability in case something goes wrong in the course of the project. You can check with the insurance company to make sure the insurance is valid.

Credentials

A good renovator should have all the necessary credentials which include licenses and permits that allow them to work as a building professional in Auckland. If they do not, don’t it is not wise to hire them.

Personally interview candidates

You have to find out if they would clean up every day before leaving or they would leave everything until the whole remodelling is done (leaving debris and tools lying around). Good renovation companies should tidy up each day after work and do a complete clean when the renovation is completed.

Get everything in writing

After selecting a contractor, it important to write a contract and have it signed. The contract should include everything from the start and stop dates of the project, work hours, quote and billing procedure. Make sure the contract is thorough and well written

Get Several Quotes

A good contractor will provide detailed quotes and expectations for your kitchen renovation. Meet several companies and get different quotes to compare what suits your interests best. Seven years ago when I was choosing countertops for our own kitchen for our Auckland based home, I exhausted myself researching all the choices that were on the market and finally settled on a marble countertop + wood on the island combo. I’ve never regretted it, But seven years have passed and much has changed in the world of kitchen countertops.

We have other kinds of countertops in our home, white laminate in the laundry room, wood in the hall bathroom, and modern cultured marble in the master bathroom. All have performed well based on our expectations. Innovation is inevitable, trends come and go, so the decision as to which countertop to choose in a kitchen remodel requires much consideration. Let’s start with a classic favorite.

Marble Style Kitchen Countertop

Marble will never go out of style so for the price you pay, you do get the “timeless” label with the investment.

Always elegant, it complements both Old World and modern kitchens equally; for bakers it’s a favorite, no surface is better for pies and pastries.

Properly sealed marble cleans up easily with a mild cleanser and cloth. Marble can stain so it must be sealed, and since it’s softer than granite, it can chip easily (we’ve suffered several small chips around our kitchen sink).

Any acidic food like citrus can etch the surface or leave white stains. There are two varieties of gray and white Italian marble that are similar in appearance, both milky white with gray veining, and they are Carrara and Calacatta. Carrara has more delicate, lighter veining; Calacatta is a rarer, pricier stone and has bolder more defined strokes, yet both are a desirable luxury stone. Calacatta Gold and Crema Marfil marbles have brown or gold veins and offer homeowners warmer tones.

Engineered quartz (not to be confused with Quartzite, another appealing natural stone used as counters) is a manmade product created mostly from natural materials. It’s made of 90 to 94 percent ground quartz and 6 to 10 percent resins and pigments that are combined into durable and nonporous slabs. The strength of quartz, even in a manufactured form, makes it naturally resistant to abrasion, scratches, dents, and even acids without the need for sealants. And the environmental impact of manufactured quartz is low: Quartz is an abundant material and the finished product is nontoxic and nonallergenic, and will last a lifetime, reducing the need for replacement.

Granite Style Kitchen Countertop

Granite has been the countertop of choice for many contractors and homeowners since the 1990s.

Many granites have a speckled or mottled surface with varied colors throughout but they are extremely durable. Although porous, when sealed granite resists stains, withstands heat, and is waterproof, hence the popularity.

There are plenty of reasons to go with granite countertops for your kitchen if you are updating you’re renovating. It is a natural stone that is both heat and scratch resistant. To make it even more durable, sealing the material will also prevent staining while helping to keep the surface bacteria free along with regular cleanings. Granite also comes in lots of beautiful colours and patterns―some options even resemble marble, which typically costs more per square metre. Whether your style is traditional or modern, there is a granite countertop out there that will suit your cooking space.

Solid Surface (Corian) Style Kitchen Countertop

Solid surface countertops like Corian are artificial, made of acrylic and polyester; they are non-porous so sealing is not required.

They can scratch or burn under extreme conditions but any mistakes can be sanded out so they are virtually maintenance free.

Corian is DuPont’s brand name for its flagship solid surface countertop material. It is a man-made product composed of 33 percent binding resins and 66 percent minerals. Corian was the original solid surface brand name. First developed by DuPont in 1967, solid surface countertops are now made by several other manufacturers and include the brands Avonite, Staron, and Mystera.

Limestone is made of calcite and is shaped from sand and aquatic life (and fossils) over time.

It’s softer than granite, yet heat resistant and moisture proof when sealed. Limestone is available in off white to sand tones and shows a beautiful patina with age. Limestone is often honed and because it is softer porous stone it can scratch easily and requires sealing.

Limestone in our opionion is the most beautiful stone that exists in the world. It is not only incredibly elegant, it also tames bold colors that you might have as a part of your interior design, while also fitting into more minimalist designs as well. The thing about limestone is that no matter what the rest of the room looks like, limestone is always going to fit. Because limestone always fits, it’s one of the most popular stones in the world. You can’t match the beauty of limestone, making it an incredibly elegant choice of natural stone that will easily fit into the aesthetic of any room you have take on the task.

Soapstone Kitchen Countertop

Like concrete (see below) soapstone is growing in popularity as a kitchen countertop material of choice.

When installed it’s often a medium gray tone that deepens over time to a more charcoal color. It’s composed of mineral talc and some slabs can have a green tint, the material is often used in labs because it is heat and chemical resistant. Soapstone is a softer surface like marble; it requires polishing to avoid cracks and can scratch or nick but it is water resistant.

When it comes to natural stone countertops, there are more options out there than just marble and granite. If you love the dark beauty of granite and the light veining of marble, consider soapstone instead. It’s durable, relatively low-maintenance, and has a lovely, old-world feel. • Soapstone does not stain.
• Soapstone counters are not harmed by hot pots, citrus, wine, acids or chemicals.
• The only maintenance recommended, not required, is the mineral oil treatment to enhance the natural darkening process the stone goes through and to ensure the soapstone darkens evenly. Mineral oil is not recommended to protect the soapstone, it does not need protection since it is naturally non- porous.
• The cost of soapstone is comparable to other natural stones.
• Soapstone can be offered in a variety of different textures, unlike most other natural stones that are only available with a high polished finish. Some clients like the stone to feel rougher to the touch, others like it a little smoother and some like it in between, we can please all tastes by re-finishing the top of the slabs, at no additional cost.

Soapstone countertops are harvested from the earth and simply custom cut to fit your kitchen. It’s all-natural and can be recycled completely. No sealers or toxic chemicals of any kind will be introduced into your home. Nothing needs to be done to make soapstone beautiful since nature has taken care of this all on its own. Once it has been quarried from the earth it simply needs a cleanup and a trimming before it arrives at your door in its natural state.

Modern Laminates Kitchen Countertop

Laminates are manufactured with a blend of resins and paper fused to particle board and they have been a budget smooth countertop surface for decades.

In the past, laminate hasn’t always had a reputation as stylish, but that’s all changed, there are several reasons to choose laminate countertops as the newest designs mimic marble, granite, and limestone.

In the past, laminate countertops required an over mount sink but as one reader pointed out (see comments), that’s not the case anymore.

There are other companies that make laminate—but Formica was the original, and the first of its kind. They’ve been in business since 1913, and that is a testament to their quality craftsmanship and customer service. Over time, the Formica brand has become interchangeable with the word “laminate”.

Formica laminate is an affordable way to reinvent your kitchen countertop. With over 200 colors and styles to choose from, there is a Formica option for every visual palette. Their designers stay on top of the industry trends and regularly add stylish new options to the collection.

Concrete Kitchen Countertop

This style is trending in the past few years and for good reason. Concrete is practically indestructible and is both heat and scratch resistant.

These countertops are either precast based on a template or poured on site, the labour intensity adds to the price per square metre, which is often more than $1,000, but look how fabulous they can be!

Pro: Concrete is durable. The strength of the cement-and-sand mix alone has some hailing it as a rock solid (we had to) design choice. After all, concrete is made up of the same material found in sidewalks.

Con: But it can crack. Does the thought of a hairline fracture make you cringe? That’s a risk that comes along with concrete countertops, most commonly when poured in place rather than pre-cast. Of course, you can prevent cracks to a certain extent by adding fiber reinforcement, rebar, and/or wire mesh. Still, cracks happen, whether because of pressure or the natural settling of the house.

The extent of renovations can determine the cost of your renovation in Auckland. Kitchen Renovation costs in Auckland can be determined by the following factors:

1. Cost of a Basic Kitchen Renovation/Alteration

A basic kitchen renovation involves changing few thing in the kitchen such as cabinets, appliances and flooring. Depending on the size of your kitchen and supplies you use, this type of kitchen renovation will typically cost between $15k (basic alterations) to $20K.

Basic kitchen renovations are ideal for first home owners, rental properties or if you need to freshen your home before re-selling. If you are doing a DIY project then the cost for your kitchen renovation will be around 15K. Most of this cost will be to make the cabinets and benchtop through a kitchen manufacturer. You will however, have to manage the project, get your own tradespeople like plumbers and electricians. The cost for this kind of kitchen renovation will not include changing your flooring or re-painting the kitchen area.

If you are renovating with a renovation company like ours then the cost for your kitchen renovation will include the following:

• Building all cabinets with storage
• Benchtop
• all tapware and sink

A mid range renovation could involve choosing natural materials for flooring, cabinets and benchtops. This type of renovation can also include changing the layout and plumbing of the kitchen. A mid range kitchen renovation will cost between the range of $23k (basic kitchen renovation) -$35k (including a change in layout) , depending on the materials you select.

HOW MUCH IS A NEW KITCHEN REMODEL COST IN NZ? BASIC, MID-RANGE & LUXURY 2021

This project was done in Greenhithe by Superior Renovations. Our client wanted to expand the kitchen. Hence we pulled down the wall between the dining room and the kitchen in order to make the kitchen more wide. We also replaced the counters, and built new cupboards to give the kitchen and spacious and airy look.

Who is a mid-range kitchen renovation for?

A mid-range kitchen renovation is mostly for people who want to continue living in their home but cannot abide by their old kitchen. They usually want to increase functionality of their kitchen to suit the way their family uses the kitchen. Most people also want to create a more open-planned kitchen layout which features the living and dining area as well. Overall they want a beautiful functional kitchen with all the modern convinces of available today.

How is a mid-range kitchen renovation different from a basic kitchen renovation cost nz?

As mentioned above, the cost for a kitchen renovation when using a renovation company is higher than a DIY job. A mid-range kitchen renovation is higher in cost compared to basic kitchen renovations because of the following factors:

Change in Layout possible

A change in layout is possible for a mid-range kitchen renovation as people are willing to spend more for their own house. Not every mid-range kitchen renovation needs a change in layout which means that with no change in layout the cost for your kitchen renovation will be in the lower end of the spectrum.

As more people are gravitating towards an open planned kitchen, they often want to change the layout of their kitchen or knock a few walls down. Knocking a few walls down can sometimes require consent if it is a load bearing wall. The need for consent from counsel requires us to draw up architectural drawings which are then submitted to the counsel for approval. This means that the cost will be on the higher side of the spectrum.

Even if you are not breaking down walls but simply changing the layout of your cabinets or position of the sink then consent might be required contributing to the overall cost.

A mix of mid to high range materials used

The materials chosen in any kitchen renovation are the biggest cost factor. Mid-range kitchen renovations often feature higher quality materials which are more durable, last a longer time and are aesthetically beautiful. Most of our clients get mid-range kitchen renovations for their homes. Porcelain tiles are often chosen for these kitchens compared to the laminate chosen for basic kitchen renovations.

We also use mostly designer stone engineered countertops that are imitated to look like high quality marble or quartz. The thickness of these countertops is also often 60mm compared to the 30mm which is used in basic kitchen renovations.

The cabinets for mid-range kitchens are custom built using high quality MDF boards from Melteca or Bestwood which is often wrapped in Thermoform to give it different textures or styles (like shaker style cabinets). If you are going for a modern kitchen then the cabinets often have a ‘handless’ setup.

Re-wiring and Re-plumbing

Most people renovate their home only once in their lifetime. This means that usually change everything within the kitchen so they do not have to upgrade parts of the kitchen every few year. Most old homes have old plumbing which means that they change the plumbing of the kitchen during renovation.
