Are You Planning A Kitchen Renovation? Things To Think About

When embarking on a new kitchen renovation project it is important to ask yourself a number of questions at the outset of the design process.  This ensures you achieve a kitchen that looks fabulous and meets all your expectations in its functionality. In this blog post we have focused on some of the main points or questions you might consider to help you get the very best design possible for your home.

1. What is it you like/dislike about your current kitchen?

Write down everything you can think of, as these points will help our designers formulate a bespoke kitchen plan. You might consider things like the layout, flow, storage, work surfaces, seating and appliances as you think about what you like and dislike with your current kitchen.

2. What is your Budget for the renovation project?

You have to come up with a kitchen design you can afford. There is no point having grand ideas if you don’t have the budget. There may be compromises when it comes to the final products and furniture you go for, but with a few smart choices, you should be able to attain the main kitchen design you desire.  For example, by choosing laminate over granite worktops on an average kitchen you might save $4,000-$6,000k, but there would be no compromise on layout. Similarly, consider a laminate door over a painted or lacquered door.

3. Establish your design wish-list for your Renovation Project

Here you should think very carefully about everything you want in terms of aesthetics and functionality.  Perhaps even write the wish list in order of preference to ensure that your main priorities are included

4. Who uses your kitchen?

Perhaps you have a large or young family?  Or is it more of a bachelor pad?

5. Kitchen Design ideas

Think about the flow around the room and envisage how you’d like it to work for you. Do you want an island? Sink or ovens in a certain place? Place for your dog? (Believe me, we have designed many a kitchen with a build-under dog bed

6. What style of kitchen do you want?

You may have a very definite idea on this, for example you’d like a very country painted style kitchen or very modern handle-less kitchen with gloss doors or even something in between?

7. Seating for the kitchen

Do you want to eat family meals in the new kitchen, or simply have somewhere for a chat and a cup of coffee? Perhaps you love entertaining large social gatherings? All of these things need considering and incorporating into your wish list.

8. Storage requirements

How much cooking do you do from scratch? Think about how much fresh/dried food you like to have to hand.  If you like entertaining friends at home, perhaps consider a wine cooler next to your fridge? Larder units are a popular way of adding extra storage whilst saving on space. There are also a variety of storage solutions if you have difficulty reaching into the back of cupboards or on top of high shelves.

9. Colour Preference

What colours do you like? – It’s worth thinking about the size of your kitchen, and the amount of natural light.  For example, lighter colours work best in smaller, darker rooms to give the impression of space.

10. Products/Appliances

Think about what your requirements are. The type of cooking you do will govern what you need. For example if you like baking, you might want to consider how much oven space you need. If convenience is important – perhaps think about a combi-microwave oven. Coffee lover? There are some great built-in coffee machines ready to make your perfect latte or cappuccino, whatever your preference. If you buy a lot of fresh food, perhaps an American style fridge? Don’t forget that you may need space for appliances unrelated to cooking such as washing machines and driers.  With so many products out there, taking time to consider your budget and how you cook, saves you wasting your money on appliances you don’t need.

11. Workstations/ Kitchen Countertop

My final point worth considering before designing your kitchen is to think about how much work surfaces you need? How much baking/entertaining do you do? Do the kids do their homework in the kitchen? Would you like to eat as a family? Here you also might consider the type of worksurfaces would best suit you and your lifestyle. Corian is great for moulding into different shapes and looks great. Granite and engineered stone surfaces look expensive and are very hard wearing. If budget is tight think about the new laminate surfaces that can still look just as fabulous and come in hundreds of colours and finishes. Read our full guide to kitchen benchtops here.

Already have all your own trades and you’re comfortable managing them for your kitchen renovation?

Although we don’t recommend if you haven’t renovated a kitchen before and/or you don’t have trades people you can trust, most renovations if not all comes with it’s own surprises because not all homes are the same – this is where experience/project management plays an important role in minimises risks to maintain costs/delays giving you higher certainty of outcome/quality backed by associated guarantees and warranties.

However, if you do intend to manage the kitchen renovation yourself, it does work out more cost effective to contact a kitchen cabinetry manufacturer directly to get the kitchen cabinets designed, manufactured and installed – leaving you to manage the other trades such as flooring, demolition, painting, plastering, splashback/tiling, electrician, plumber, and sometimes a carpenter/builder.

Cost of Bathroom Remodeling in Auckland – What to expect

Styles come and go, but if your bathroom looks the same as it did in the 1980s, it might be time for an upgrade.

Remodeling your bathroom doesn’t just make it look modern. Bathroom remodeling also can include more energy-efficient fixtures, so you use less water and electricity, and save money.

Before you decide to repaint, retile or replace anything in your bathroom, you want to first answer the question: Do you know the accurate cost of bathroom remodeling in Auckland?

It really depends on what you plan to do and the size of the bathroom.

Average cost of remodeling a bathroom in NZ

The average cost to remodel a bathroom in NZ is just under $20,000.

For the most part, people who decided to remodel their bathrooms spent from $15,910 to $23,835.

To be sure, you can pay less than the average for the bathroom renovation if you only make a few simple changes to your bathroom or if you do the work yourself. Even so, if you want a complete makeover, you might spend considerably more.

What makes up the cost of a bathroom renovation?

Your bathroom renovation depends on your goals.

Some options will dramatically increase the cost. Others won’t. Before you start to remodel your bathroom, it’s a good idea to determine the scale of the project so that you can avoid going over budget.

    • Sinks, tubs and showers
      • People often swap out their old units. Or, they’ll replace a tub with a shower or vice versa. There’s a wide range of costs for this job. At the low end, you might pay slightly less than $400 for a new sink. At the high end, you can wind up paying several thousand dollars. The same holds true for a new shower or bathtub.
    • Toilets
      • A basic, low-cost toilet might run $230. A more expensive model, with features like dual flush or one made from higher quality materials, can cost more than $1,400.
    • Bathroom Flooring
      • Whether you get new ceramic tile or another type of flooring, the average cost is an estimated $2,023.
    • Lighting
      • How much lighting costs depends on how fancy you want to be. A simple light fixture can cost less than $220. Prices rise from there.
    • Bathroom Cabinets and countertops
      • The cost of new countertops and cabinets often makes up a big chunk of the cost of bathroom remodeling. You can expect to pay just over $2,000 to more than $26,000 for new cabinets, and from $1,800 to more than $12,000 for new countertops.
    • Installation
      • Labor cost for installation is typically 20 percent of the total cost of remodeling.

A low-end bathroom renovation in NZ

If you’d like to keep the cost of your bathroom remodeling on the low side or at least lower than the average cost, you have options. Instead of completely rearranging the bathroom, it’s less expensive to leave the sink, bathtub, shower and toilet where they are. Simply swap the older models for newer, updated versions.

If you don’t have a lot to spend on countertops, you can get lower-end granite or another lower-priced material. You also can cut costs by purchasing lighting, flooring and cabinets off the shelf instead of installing custom fixtures.

A high-end bathroom renovation in NZ

If you have a bit more to spend, you can upgrade your remodeling in a few ways. One option is to get higher-quality, custom countertops, such as quartz or custom-cut granite.

Also, you may want to invest in higher-quality fixtures, such as faucets made of bronze or copper and solid wood, glazed cabinets.

Another big ticket job is moving the shower, tub, sink and/or toilet from one part of the room to another. That also boosts the price tag.

    Conclusion

Remodeling a bathroom has several benefits for the homeowner, aside from making the room look better and improving its function. You can recoup around 60 percent of the cost of remodeling when you sell your home, as long as the changes you make are appealing.

Adding another sink to a master bathroom, improving the lighting and making the shower function better are a few examples of bathroom updates that pay off in the long run.

      Bathroom Renovation

Bathroom Renovations Under $10,000 – On A Budget – NZ

With so many designs, beautiful fixtures and brilliant architects, designing a bathroom can seem like a fun filled experience. However, staying within your budget can turn this  bathroom renovation process into a stressful experience instead. When clients give us a budget of around $8K to $10K, we always advice them to not try and re-vamp their whole bathroom at the same time. Here are our tips on how you can in fact change the whole look of your bathroom under $10,000.

Bathroom Renovations under $10,000 are a definite possibility! YES it is a possibility! Bathroom Renovation Ideas while spending Under $10,000 – On A Budget – NZ.

      1. Decide on your priority for your Bathroom Renovation

Think long and hard about your priorities. Do you want to change the look of your bathroom or are you looking at changing that old bathtub that you have had for ages? Or do you want to add heated floors? The key to bathroom renovations under $10,000 is to have a clear sense of priorities and careful planning.

      2. Renovating the whole bathroom

Renovating the whole bathroom can be a near-impossible task under $10,000. If you are still looking at doing it, then you will have to compromise.

You could choose the most important fixture that you want to replace and get the other fixtures either second hard or of a cheaper variety. Get your plumbing sorted first because the price for plumbing is unlikely to differ no matter what fixture you get. Once the plumbing costs are sorted, then get that one thing replaced that is really high on your list. For example you might be wanting to replace your bath, well then get out there and buy the bath of your dreams. However for the kitchen cabinets and sink, look around your home and see what you could re-use.

An example of this is reusing your living room cabinets that you aren’t using anymore. Get them varnished, polish your old sink and get them fitted in your bathroom. This can prove to be a very elegant touch. This kind of renovation can take up to $10,000.

The cabinets in this are bathroom have been reused from the previous living room of the client.

      3. Make one fixture the hero of your bathroom renovation

Choose one extravagant thing that you want in your bathroom and make it a focal point. It could either be a Japanese bath with wooden skirting type benches around it to make it look like a spa or a waterfall shower. This focal point can be expensive but it can still fit in your budget as long as you do change much else in your bathroom.

A great example of making one part of your bathroom a focal point

      4. Design Design Design

There are a multitude of possibilities if you are not looking at changing your fixtures and are focused on a re-vamp or a new style for your bathroom.

      a) Make one of the walls a focal point: Use tiles, mosaic, marble or wood. Use whatever you most desire and use that material on an entire wall instead of the whole bathroom. This will keep your costs under $10,000 as Mosaic can be very expensive. You can make this wall the focus of your bathroom. You could couple that wall with a few mirrors or antique looking lamps to give it a Moorish look (especially if you use mosaic on the walls!!)

mosaid, Kitchen Renovation, Bathroom Renovation, House Renovation Auckland

The use of Mosaic on walls and floors changes the look of the bathroom completely giving it an exotic Moorish feel

      b) Replace your flooring: Replace your bland looking tiles for some colourful tiles. Add a bright rug in front of your sink cabinet, Paint your cabinets a dull gold, hang some brass lamps, add a few plants to add a bohemian look to your bathroom. This kind of renovation will only cost you $5,000-$7,000.

size-of-bathroom, Kitchen Renovation, Bathroom Renovation, House Renovation Auckland

The type of tile you use in your bathroom depends largely on the size of your bathroom

      c) Use Laminate: Laminate is no more a cheap and boring option! There are a lot of styles and available in laminate which mimic real wood/texture, plus they do not rot, make you allergic and also have a moisture proof board that will save your surfaces.

This bathroom uses textured laminate to give it a mature and sophisticated look

      d) Picture Windows: You will be amazed at what a difference a picture window can make to your bathroom. Make sure that you buy a good quality picture window which is realistic as you do not want a shabby looking feel. Frame the picture window with a good wooden frame to make it look like a window. This should typically cost about $5000 to $6000.

This ocean picture window instantly gives this bathroom a serene and calm feel

      e) Create an illusion of space: adding mirrors can make your bathroom space look bigger and creating depth which will completely revamp your bathroom. Use mirrors not just for your vanity but perhaps behind the door or the upper half of your walls. This will cost you between $2000 to $6000 depending on the area.

Maybe it is that gorgeous tapestry or a simple clean bathroom with a serene painting as a backdrop. Add ambiance  and charm to these features by adding soft light.

Cost Of Replacing Kitchen Cupboard Doors in NZ

All you need to know about the costs of fitting new kitchen cupboard doors including materials, labour and time frames within New Zealand.

What can you expect from replacing kitchen cupboards

Kitchen cupboard door replacement is a great way to update your kitchen at a fraction of the cost of a new kitchen renovation project!

Our renovation experts have great insights into what the costs for such renovations are, hence this article will give you an idea of costs and price range for replacing kitchen cabinets.

Most kitchens have carcasses (the actual body/frame of the cupboard) that are the same standard sizes, so you can get new doors and drawer fronts, along with kickboards, to give your kitchen a stylish makeover without breaking the bank!

There is a huge difference in prices charged for this job, particularly between small local traders and the larger national companies, so it is even more important to shop around and get a few prices when looking to replace your kitchen cupboard doors.

Many companies will try and sell you a new kitchen rather than just replace doors and drawer fronts, as the profit margins are much higher, but stick to your guns and firmly request quotes for new cupboard doors only, otherwise you could be talked into buying a complete new kitchen!

The estimates you get generally won’t include the cost of new kitchen worktops or flooring, but having these related jobs done at the same time would certainly finish off your updated kitchen nicely! But even just the new cupboard/drawer fronts will give you a kitchen that looks as good as new, as long as you have everything fitted professionally by an experienced kitchen fitter/joiner.

Over the last few years replacement kitchen doors have become a big part of the kitchen remodeling business, many people update their existing kitchens by simply fitting new kitchen doors to the old kitchen cabinets. This is a far cheaper alternative than replacing the old kitchen completely and who even notices that the old cupboards have not been changed anyway? It is also much quicker to replace doors and drawer fronts than to replace the kitchen cabinets. So if your kitchen cabinets are in a good order and you like the layout of your kitchen the way it is, then resurfacing the kitchen cabinets that are already fitted could be a great option.

Kitchen Cupboard Doors Ideas and Designs

        1. Shaker Style Kitchen Cupboard

The most common style for cabinets today is the Shaker-style. The Shaker-style consists of five pieces of flat-panel, creating a frame with four pieces and with a single flat centre panel as the fifth piece. This is a popular trend because of the simple and classic look they offer to either a traditional or contemporary design.

        2. Louvered Style Kitchen Cupboard

Louvered kitchen cabinets come with horizontal wooden slats, as well as a hefty price tag. With a design typically seen on windows, furniture pieces, and interior doors, louvered cabinets add a unique style to kitchen cabinetry.

        3. Flat-Panel or Slab Style Kitchen Cupboard

Also known as “slab” cabinet doors, flat-panel kitchen cabinet doors are simple but stylish. The flat-panel kitchen cabinet style offers hard lines and minimalist form and lacks any expensive detail. The appearance of the simple flat-panel cabinet makes it a great fit for both contemporary and modern kitchens.

        4. Inset Style Kitchen Cupboard

Just as their name suggests, inset-style cabinets are made up of an inset door set inside the cabinet frame instead of outside of the frame like typical cabinet doors. Each door is designed and built using incredibly precise measurements to ensure the wood sits inside the frame and opens and closes correctly.

        5. Distressed Style Kitchen Cupboard

Looking for an antique-style kitchen? If so, you’ll probably want to go for distressed cabinets and drawers. Available from most manufacturers, distressed-looking cabinets can come in any door style with the corners rubbed off and other distressing techniques done to create an old feel.

        6. Beadboard Style Kitchen Cupboard

Made of rows of vertical planks with indentation or ridges, known as “beads,” between each blank, beadboard cabinetry offers a more dynamic look than some other styles, such as flat kitchen cupboards. The look of the beads gives this style cabinet door texture and makes for a perfect country farmhouse or cottage style kitchen.

        7. Thermofoil Style Kitchen Cupboard

Thermofoil kitchen cabinets are molded out of medium-density fiberboard (MDF). This style door is then wrapped in a type of plastic coating and baked under intense heat to be sealed. The process leads to a durable and cost-effective kind of kitchen cabinetry. Usually mass-produced, thermofoil cabinets only come in solid colors and are imitation wood. However, these cabinets are also inexpensive.

        8. High Gloss Style Kitchen Cupboards

Gloss acrylic is a newer, cutting edge kitchen design material that is rapidly gaining in popularity due to it’s durable, moisture resistant finish. A bold, simple, stunning kitchen cabinet that has the versatility of offering textured, satin or gloss finishes.  Hardwearing and easy to clean, it is an international standard of finish.

        Kitchen Cupboard Doors DIY option

Most people with decent DIY skills can change cabinet doors and drawer fronts by themselves as long as they take their time.

If you feel you can’t do this by yourself, simply get in touch a local kitchen fitter or joiner as it will be just one or two day’s work for them with the right tools. The selection of new kitchen doors available to buy today is incredible and still growing – from places like Placemakers, Mitre 10 and ITM. Mitre 10 has quite a large range of kitchen doors you could purchase yourselves and simply find an installer to get it installed for, this would be the cheapest way to get your kitchen doors replacement (not taking into consideration cost of removal and repair work if required).

Whether you prefer contemporary kitchens of traditional kitchens, or anything in-between, you will be able to find replacement cabinet doors and facings to suit. Many companies will supply replacement kitchen doors which are completely blank with no drillings so you can place the handles and hinges exactly where you would like them to be. They also have no hinge holes as many kitchen cabinet manufacturers place their hinges at different heights, so buying doors with the holes already in them will limit you in terms of what type of cabinets they will fit.

Many people have discovered that replacing your entire kitchen, when a makeover looks just as good, does not make much sense. For the majority of people, they will save thousands when compare to the cost of an entire new kitchen, plus there’s less stress and mess with a simple kitchen facelift. No need to empty all of your cupboards, and the entire job rarely takes longer than 1-2 days. On average, by replacing your old kitchen unit doors with new ones you will save at least half the money you would have spent on a comparable new kitchen – and you could potentially save much more as that saving was based on getting new kitchen worktops and sink, oven and hob too! Of course saving all this money is no good if you don’t like the finished product, but you really would be hard pushed to tell once the job is done, the new doors, kick plates and drawer fronts will completely transform the kitchen.

Buying pre-built Kitchen Cabinets from retailers like Mitre 10

When it comes to remodeling or renovating your home, choosing the right cabinets is crucial to creating the perfect look and feel. While custom cabinets may seem like the ideal solution because it is made to fit, they often a bit more expensive compared to buying off the shelf (eg. Mitre10) and longer lead times. On the other hand, prebuilt cabinets in standard sizes are readily available in stores like Mitre10 and can be a more cost-effective and efficient option if it suits your kitchen – but you’ll need to install it, or find an installer to do it.

Prebuilt cabinets from places like Mitre10 is generally more affordable than custom cabinets from manufacturers. They are manufactured in large quantities and come in standard sizes (standard is the keyword here), which means the production cost is lower. These cost savings is passed onto the consumer, making prebuilt cabinets are definately a more budget-friendly option.

However, one of the main disadvantages of prebuilt cabinets is that they may not fit perfectly in your space. Every home is unique, and if you have an irregularly shaped or sized space, prebuilt cabinets may not be the best solution. In this case, custom cabinets that are manufactured to fit your exact measurements may be a better option.

Here are some advantages of getting custom cabinets done from kitchen manufacturers:

        1. Personalization: With custom cabinets, you can have complete control over the design and customization of your cabinets. You can choose from a variety of materials, finishes, colors, and hardware options, ensuring that the cabinets are tailored to your specific tastes and needs.
        2. Perfect Fit: Custom cabinets are designed and built to fit your space perfectly, ensuring that every inch of your kitchen is utilized efficiently. This means that you won’t have to worry about awkward gaps or wasted space, and your cabinets will look and function exactly as you want them to.
        3. High-Quality Materials: Kitchen manufacturers use high-quality materials to construct custom cabinets, ensuring that they are durable and long-lasting. This means that you won’t have to worry about your cabinets wearing out or becoming damaged over time.
        4. Expert Installation: When you work with a kitchen manufacturer to install your custom cabinets, you can rest assured that the installation will be done correctly and professionally. This means that you won’t have to worry about any issues arising during or after the installation process.
        5. Increased Home Value: Custom cabinets can add significant value to your home, as they are seen as a high-end and desirable feature. If you plan to sell your home in the future, having custom cabinets installed can make your home more attractive to potential buyers.
        6. Warranty: Most kitchen manufacturers offer warranties on their custom cabinets, which means that you can have peace of mind knowing that your investment is protected.

Overall, getting custom cabinets done from kitchen manufacturers is a great option for those who want a high-quality and personalized solution for their kitchen. While custom cabinets may be more expensive than prebuilt cabinets, they offer a range of benefits that make them worth the investment.

Ultimately, the decision to choose prebuilt cabinets versus custom cabinets depends on your budget, timeline, and the specific needs of your space. Prebuilt cabinets are a great option for those looking for a budget-friendly and convenient solution, while custom cabinets are ideal for those who require a precise fit and unique design.

The Cost Of Replacing Your Kitchen Cupboard Doors in NZ

The average cost to replace kitchen cupboard doors for a regular-sized kitchen would normally cost around $600+gst in labour from a local fitter.

This price includes waste removal of the old cupboard doors, the fitting of the new cupboard doors, drawers, handles and kickboards, but does not include the costs of the materials. If you decide to receive a quote from a national company prices can be up to $2,500+gst and quite often they tell you that changing cupboard doors isn’t possible without new kitchen carcasses. We suggest asking your local fitter to check if your kitchen carcasses are suitable for new cupboards doors.

The price of the actual cupboard doors themselves can vary greatly depending on size, quality, finish and style. Kitchen drawers tend to be priced at around $60-$90 each, and the cupboard doors at around $90. Kitchen door handles can add up too depending on the quality of handle you choose with prices starting at around $8 each.

Kitchen Countertop Options To Consider While Renovating in NZ

Seven years ago when I was choosing countertops for our own kitchen for our Auckland based home, I exhausted myself researching all the choices that were on the market and finally settled on a marble countertop + wood on the island combo. I’ve never regretted it, But seven years have passed and much has changed in the world of kitchen countertops.

We have other kinds of countertops in our home, white laminate in the laundry room, wood in the hall bathroom, and modern cultured marble in the master bathroom. All have performed well based on our expectations. Innovation is inevitable, trends come and go, so the decision as to which countertop to choose in a kitchen remodel requires much consideration. Let’s start with a classic favorite.

        Marble Style Kitchen Countertop

Marble will never go out of style so for the price you pay, you do get the “timeless” label with the investment.

Always elegant, it complements both Old World and modern kitchens equally; for bakers it’s a favorite, no surface is better for pies and pastries.

Properly sealed marble cleans up easily with a mild cleanser and cloth. Marble can stain so it must be sealed, and since it’s softer than granite, it can chip easily (we’ve suffered several small chips around our kitchen sink).

Any acidic food like citrus can etch the surface or leave white stains. There are two varieties of gray and white Italian marble that are similar in appearance, both milky white with gray veining, and they are Carrara and Calacatta. Carrara has more delicate, lighter veining; Calacatta is a rarer, pricier stone and has bolder more defined strokes, yet both are a desirable luxury stone. Calacatta Gold and Crema Marfil marbles have brown or gold veins and offer homeowners warmer tones.

        Marble Counter top

Marble stone is formed from limestone, superheated to form its unique crystalline structure. Marble countertop surfaces are timeless with their classic beauty and elegance. If you are looking for a surface to sustain through the ages, this natural stone countertop material is perfect for you. Its naturally cool temperature is pleasing for cooking as well as keeping any workspaces temperature controlled.

        Wooden Style Kitchen Countertop

Wood countertops are having a moment in the spotlight right now with butcher block being so affordable

Wood countertops are higher maintenance than stone, they require sealing with various natural products like beeswax or mineral oil, or waterproof varnishes.

Wood countertops cannot withstand heat which requires the consistent use of hot pads or trivets. Water spills or rings can leave permanent marks if moisture is left too long, but they have classic appeal and add a warmth that no other countertop can compete with, especially in traditional, craftsman, or cottage style homes. The use of wood in any space brings character to your home and when cared for properly, wood countertops will remain useful and beautiful for years.

        Wooden Counter top

Real wood kitchen countertops are an old-world idea that is back in vogue. And as homeowners pore over options in kitchen design in the constantly changing world of styles, more and more are turning to unique, out-of-the-box ideas. Wood countertops also have a place in the green-building movement, since many kinds of wood are fully renewable and are often gathered from recycled sources.

        Engineered Quartz Style Kitchen Countertop

Quartz kitchen countertops are manufactured man-made surfaces with contemporary appeal created from pigmented resin and ground quartz chips.

They are readily available in multiple colors and in either honed or polished sheens. Quartz countertops share the durability of stone but are easier to care for since they are non-porous and anti-bacterial.For the most part, you won’t find the natural variegation that you do in granite or marble products yet some natural quartz manufacturers like Cambria are mimicking them well.

quartz, Kitchen Renovation, Bathroom Renovation, House Renovation Auckland

        Quartz Counter top

Engineered quartz (not to be confused with Quartzite, another appealing natural stone used as counters) is a manmade product created mostly from natural materials. It’s made of 90 to 94 percent ground quartz and 6 to 10 percent resins and pigments that are combined into durable and nonporous slabs. The strength of quartz, even in a manufactured form, makes it naturally resistant to abrasion, scratches, dents, and even acids without the need for sealants. And the environmental impact of manufactured quartz is low: Quartz is an abundant material and the finished product is nontoxic and nonallergenic, and will last a lifetime, reducing the need for replacement.

        Granite Style Kitchen Countertop

Granite has been the countertop of choice for many contractors and homeowners since the 1990s.

Many granites have a speckled or mottled surface with varied colors throughout but they are extremely durable. Although porous, when sealed granite resists stains, withstands heat, and is waterproof, hence the popularity.

Grantite, Kitchen Renovation, Bathroom Renovation, House Renovation Auckland

        Granite Counter top

There are plenty of reasons to go with granite countertops for your kitchen if you are updating you’re renovating. It is a natural stone that is both heat and scratch resistant. To make it even more durable, sealing the material will also prevent staining while helping to keep the surface bacteria free along with regular cleanings. Granite also comes in lots of beautiful colors and patterns―some options even resemble marble, which typically costs more per square foot. Whether your style is traditional or modern, there is a granite countertop out there that will suit your cooking space.

Solid Surface (Corian) Style Kitchen Countertop

Solid surface countertops like Corian are artificial, made of acrylic and polyester; they are non-porous so sealing is not required.

They can scratch or burn under extreme conditions but any mistakes can be sanded out so they are virtually maintenance free.

        Solid Surface (Corian) Counter top

Corian is DuPont’s brand name for its flagship solid surface countertop material. It is a man-made product composed of 33 percent binding resins and 66 percent minerals. Corian was the original solid surface brand name. First developed by DuPont in 1967, solid surface countertops are now made by several other manufacturers and include the brands Avonite, Staron, and Mystera.

        Limestone Kitchen Countertop

Limestone is made of calcite and is shaped from sand and aquatic life (and fossils) over time.

It’s softer than granite, yet heat resistant and moisture proof when sealed. Limestone is available in off white to sand tones and shows a beautiful patina with age. Limestone is often honed and because it is softer porous stone it can scratch easily and requires sealing.

        Limestone Counter top

Limestone in our opionion is the most beautiful stone that exists in the world. It is not only incredibly elegant, it also tames bold colors that you might have as a part of your interior design, while also fitting into more minimalist designs as well. The thing about limestone is that no matter what the rest of the room looks like, limestone is always going to fit. Because limestone always fits, it’s one of the most popular stones in the world.  You can’t match the beauty of limestone, making it an incredibly elegant choice of natural stone that will easily fit into the aesthetic of any room you have take on the task.

        Soapstone Kitchen Countertop

Like concrete (see below) soapstone is growing in popularity as a kitchen countertop material of choice.

When installed it’s often a medium gray tone that deepens over time to a more charcoal color. It’s composed of mineral talc and some slabs can have a green tint, the material is often used in labs because it is heat and chemical resistant. Soapstone is a softer surface like marble; it requires polishing to avoid cracks and can scratch or nick but it is water resistant.

        Soapstone Counter top

When it comes to natural stone countertops, there are more options out there than just marble and granite. If you love the dark beauty of granite and the light veining of marble, consider soapstone instead. It’s durable, relatively low-maintenance, and has a lovely, old-world feel. Here’s everything you need to know. Why choose Soapstone for your kitchen bench?

        • Soapstone does not stain.
        • Soapstone counters are not harmed by hot pots, citrus, wine, acids or chemicals.
        • The only maintenance recommended, not required, is the mineral oil treatment to enhance the natural darkening process the stone goes through and to ensure the soapstone darkens evenly. Mineral oil is not recommended to protect the soapstone, it does not need protection since it is naturally non- porous.
        • The cost of soapstone is comparable to other natural stones.
        • Soapstone can be offered in a variety of different textures, unlike most other natural stones that are only available with a high polished finish. Some clients like the stone to feel rougher to the touch, others like it a little smoother and some like it in between, we can please all tastes by re-finishing the top of the slabs, at no additional cost.

Soapstone countertops are harvested from the earth and simply custom cut to fit your kitchen. It’s all-natural and can be recycled completely. No sealers or toxic chemicals of any kind will be introduced into your home. Nothing needs to be done to make soapstone beautiful since nature has taken care of this all on its own. Once it has been quarried from the earth it simply needs a cleanup and a trimming before it arrives at your door in its natural state.

        Modern Laminates Kitchen Countertop

Laminates are manufactured with a blend of resins and paper fused to particle board and they have been a budget smooth countertop surface for decades.

In the past, laminate hasn’t always had a reputation as stylish, but that’s all changed, there are several reasons to choose laminate countertops as the newest designs mimic marble, granite, and limestone.

In the past, laminate countertops required an over mount sink but as one reader pointed out (see comments), that’s not the case anymore.

Our personal favourite is the Formica® brand

There are other companies that make laminate—but Formica was the original, and the first of its kind. They’ve been in business since 1913, and that is a testament to their quality craftsmanship and customer service. Over time, the Formica brand has become interchangeable with the word “laminate”.

Formica laminate is an affordable way to reinvent your kitchen countertop. With over 200 colors and styles to choose from, there is a Formica option for every visual palette. Their designers stay on top of the industry trends and regularly add stylish new options to the collection.

        Concrete Kitchen Countertop

This style is trending in the past few years and for good reason. Concrete is practically indestructible and is both heat and scratch resistant.

These countertops are either precast based on a template or poured on site, the labor intensity adds to the price per square foot which is often $100 or more, but look how fabulous they can be!

Pro: Concrete is durable. The strength of the cement-and-sand mix alone has some hailing it as a rock solid (we had to) design choice. After all, concrete is made up of the same material found in sidewalks.

Con: But it can crack. Does the thought of a hairline fracture make you cringe? That’s a risk that comes along with concrete countertops, most commonly when poured in place rather than pre-cast. Of course, you can prevent cracks to a certain extent by adding fiber reinforcement, rebar, and/or wire mesh. Still, cracks happen, whether because of pressure or the natural settling of the house.

Most affordable countertop option for Kitchens in Auckland

Here are our five recommended best budget kitchen countertop options.

        1. Quartz
        2. Granite
        3. Laminate
        4. Ceramic Tile
        5. Concrete

There are so many other countertop products coming to market in recent years, how can anyone keep up !?  Zinc, recycled glass, stainless steel, the list goes on. What solid surface countertop(s) do you have in your kitchen? Are you pleased or displeased with yours?

How to Choose Custom Kitchen Cabinets For Your Kitchen Renovation

Research shows that we spend more of our waking hours in our kitchen than in any other room in the house! With so much time spent in one area of your home, it’s important to update this space with a classy, comfortable look that suits your unique needs and style.

Custom cabinets are a great way to add to your kitchen remodel and update this space. With so many different kitchen cabinet options out there, you will want to consider some important factors before making a selection.

Custom Cabinet Space for your Kitchen

When selecting cabinets that work well in your home, it is important to consider how much space you can dedicate to your cabinets.

This part is especially important to consider if you are on a tighter budget. If you have a lot of room for cabinet space but a lower budget, you will want to consider a less expensive, simpler design for your cabinets.

It’s also important to choose cabinets that provide you with enough space to fulfill your storage needs. If you have enough room in your kitchen for cabinets with an extra inch or two of depth, it makes all the difference when it comes to storing your larger pots and pans. You may want to work with a professional designer for this step to learn more about your different cabinet options.

The following options are great for helping you organize and store unique kitchen items such as wine bottles, seasonings, large pots and pans, dish towels, and cleaning materials:

          • Pull-out cutting boards
          • Roll-out trash and recycling spaces
          • Roll-out trays
          • Lazy Susans
          • Mini pantries
          • Baskets and bins
          • Wine racks
          • Plate racks
          • And much more!

Custom Cabinet Materials for your Kitchen

Choosing the right material for your kitchen cabinets can be a big task!

Cabinets make a big style statement in your kitchen and the doors, drawer fronts, and side panels come in a wide variety of options and prices. When considering cabinet material, you will want to carefully select something that works well with the overall style you would like to bring into your kitchen.

Among the most popular types of cabinetry wood are maple, oak, and cherry. Once you have chosen your type of wood, you will have virtually limitless options to change the appearance with paint colors or stains.

Here are some top brands you will want to consider choosing for quality kitchen cabinets:

          • Timberlake cabinets
          • Decorá cabinets
          • Crystal cabinets
          • Showplace cabinets

Choosing the right kitchen cabinet design and material is no easy task! That’s why there’s people out there to help you.

Custom Cabinet Style for your Kitchen

In order to choose the right cabinet style for your space, you will first want to consider the look you are going for.

Would you like your kitchen to have a more traditional feel or are you into sleek, modern designs?

          Modern Style Kitchens

If you have decided to go with a modern kitchen, you will want to choose cabinets that have simple edging and design. You will be happy to know that this style of cabinetry is often easier to maintain because dust is less likely to get caught in smaller crevices.

          Traditional Style Kitchen

If you would like to go with a more traditional kitchen, you will want to choose cabinets that have deeper, more detailed edging. This look will give your cabinets more depth and character!

          Light Colored Kitchens

Lighter colors are known for making spaces appear more open. If you would like to brighten up your kitchen space or if you are working with a smaller floor plan, you will want to consider choosing white cabinets.

          Darker Toned Kitchen

If you have plenty of space in your kitchen and you would like a deep, rich, luxurious feel, you will want to consider choosing a dark-toned wood. When choosing a darker toned cabinet material, you should keep in mind that darker colors tend to become more of a focal point in a room.

          Custom Cabinet Maintenance

When it comes to maintaining your kitchen cabinets, some people prefer a material that means less upkeep.

If you are one of these people, you should consider choosing a door style with minimal detail. Raised panel cabinet styles mean slightly more upkeep because they have edges and nooks where dust can cling to. If you are looking for a simple, less detailed cabinet design, you will want to check out shaker style and slab door front options.

          Low Maintenance Cabinetry Tips:

          • You will want to opt for flush cabinet ends that match together seamlessly to avoid edgework that catches dust.
          • For modern kitchens, choose simple, flat surfaces with little or no raised edges or detail work to avoid dirt and dust build-up.
          • For traditional kitchens with deep edges and raised paneling, choose a material with a glaze. This helps fill corners where dust can hide and darkens the surface so you can’t see dirt).

For more additional factors to consider before choosing the right custom cabinetry for your kitchen, contact the professionals at Superior Renovations Today.

These may include creating an open concept or re-configuring your kitchen for better traffic flow. If you want to move in less than 5 years, however, focus on aesthetically pleasing options that will improve home value, such as new appliances or updated cabinets.

daughter-teaching-technology_4460x4460, Kitchen Renovation, Bathroom Renovation, House Renovation Auckland

            1. Explore your project payment options.

Most people opt for a home equity loan since they are tax deductible though other options are available, like refinancing and taking out a personal loan. Check with your contractor to see if they offer payment plans, making sure that you renovate your kitchen well within your budget.

            1. Factor in the cost of lodging and eating out as needed.

Don’t forget to include these important costs when considering a large-scale kitchen re-modelling project. If it’s possible, stay with a family member or friend to save funds during your remodel. Otherwise make arrangements at a hotel or motel to suit your budget. You will also not be able to eat your meals at home which means you will also have to factor in the costs of eating out as needed.

Keeping your renovations within the budget always requires careful planning no matter what you are willing to spend. Decide together as a family about what your budget looks like and how it will impact your family when then the renovation is in process. Kitchen Renovations usually last for a maximum of 2-3 weeks but that does not mean that the process has to be stressful or very expensive. If you hire a company that has its values aligned with yours then it can actually be a very fun experience to see your kitchen transform into something truly spectacular.

Kitchen Renovation Cost NZ wide – explained by Experts

Cost of New Kitchen NZ Wide

Are you ready to renovate your Auckland kitchen? Kitchen remodelling is an excellent investment for any homeowner. A newly remodelled kitchen creates a beautiful space to enjoy family meals and entertain your friends. Renovating a kitchen can also have a good return on investment in the real estate market!.However, a kitchen renovation is a large project. It requires careful planning and budgeting. Many factors affect your kitchen renovation cost, including the size of the kitchen and the chosen materials.

So how much does it cost to renovate a kitchen NZ wide?

In this blog post, we are breaking down all the factors that go into determining a kitchen renovation cost. We also wrote down our tried and true tips to help you build the kitchen of your dreams.

So How much does it Cost to renovate a Kitchen in NZ?

When determining how much it costs to renovate a kitchen in NZ there are three questions you should be asking yourself.

What is the resale value of other homes in your neighbourhood?

How long do you plan to remain in your home?

What is your personal financial situation?

These factors will be unique to you based on your personal situation and where you place the most value.

Other important factors that affect the cost of new kitchen NZ are:

              • Cost of material.

Your selection of material for the cabinet doors, bench tops, flooring, fixtures and appliances have a significant impact on your kitchen renovation cost. In general, wood alternatives such as laminates are a cheaper option. Natural materials such as wood and stone will be on the more expensive side. Natural materials will however be more aesthetically pleasing and last a much a longer time.

              • Your cabinet configuration.

Cabinets with drawers will be more expensive than the ones without them. This is because cabinets with drawers require additional work and finishing. Eliminating one drawer glide can save you anywhere from $300-$500! That is why make sure to decide on the drawer system because it will have a significant impact on the cost of new kitchen in NZ.

              • Decorative details and accessories.

Adding patterns, glass, columns and other decorative features will eventually raise the final cost of your new kitchen. Things like spice and garbage pull-outs and organisers will also add cost to your kitchen remodel.

As you can see, there’s no short answer to the question “How much does it cost to renovate a kitchen NZ wide?” Many variables go into pricing your kitchen renovation.  As we are a full renovation company we have a team of kitchen Designers and renovators that do exactly that. The entire team will help you establish your budget, determine the scope, and get closer to achieving your dream kitchen!

What are the other factors that go into the cost of new kitchen NZ wide?

The extent of renovations can determine the cost of your renovation in Auckland. Kitchen Renovation costs in Auckland can be determined by the following factors:

              1. Cost of a Basic Kitchen Renovation/Alteration

A basic kitchen renovation involves changing few thing in the kitchen such as cabinets, appliances and flooring. Depending on the size of your kitchen and supplies you use, this type of kitchen renovation will typically cost between $15k (basic alterations) to $20K.

kitchen4, Kitchen Renovation, Bathroom Renovation, House Renovation Auckland

Basic kitchen renovations are ideal for first home owners, rental properties or if you need to freshen your home before re-selling. If you are doing a DIY project then the cost for your kitchen renovation will be around 15K. Most of this cost will be to make the cabinets and benchtop through a kitchen manufacturer. You will however, have to manage the project, get your own tradespeople like plumbers and electricians. The cost for this kind of kitchen renovation will not include changing your flooring or re-painting the kitchen area.

If you are renovating with a renovation company like ours then the cost for your kitchen renovation will include the following:

              • Building all cabinets with storage
              • Benchtop
              • all tapware and sink
              • cost for all labour like electricians, carpenters, builders, painters, tilers, grouters, plumbers etc
              • Project management for the entire project
              • All renovation materials
              • In house kitchen designer

The cost for a basic kitchen renovation if you are renovating with a renovation company will be between $20,000 to $23,000 depending on the size of your kitchen as well as the materials you choose.

For basic kitchen renovations we advice clients to use mid range materials to keep costs down and so they can make a return on their investment if renting or re-selling.

              2. Cost of a Mid-Range Kitchen Renovation

A mid range renovation could involve choosing natural materials for flooring, cabinets and benchtops. This type of renovation can also include changing the layout and plumbing of the kitchen. A mid range kitchen renovation will cost between the range of $23k (basic kitchen renovation) -$35k (including a change in layout) , depending on the materials you select.

Read our article below for a breakdown of costs for kitchen renovations

HOW MUCH IS A NEW KITCHEN REMODEL COST IN NZ? BASIC, MID-RANGE & LUXURY 2021

superior-reno-6, Kitchen Renovation, Bathroom Renovation, House Renovation Auckland

This project was done in Greenhithe by Superior Renovations. Our client wanted to expand the kitchen. Hence we pulled down the wall between the dining room and the kitchen in order to make the kitchen more wide. We also replaced the counters, and built new cupboards to give the kitchen and spacious and airy look.

The reason for your renovation plays a key role in determining whether you should go for a basic kitchen renovation, mid-range kitchen renovation or a luxury high-end kitchen renovation.

Who is a mid-range kitchen renovation for?

A mid-range kitchen renovation is mostly for people who want to continue living in their home but cannot abide by their old kitchen. They usually want to increase functionality of their kitchen to suit the way their family uses the kitchen. Most people also want to create a more open-planned kitchen layout which features the living and dining area as well. Overall they want a beautiful functional kitchen with all the modern convinces of available today.

How is a mid-range kitchen renovation different from a basic kitchen renovation cost nz?

As mentioned above, the cost for a kitchen renovation when using a renovation company is higher than a DIY job. A mid-range kitchen renovation is higher in cost compared to basic kitchen renovations because of the following factors:

              Change in Layout possible

A change in layout is possible for a mid-range kitchen renovation as people are willing to spend more for their own house. Not every mid-range kitchen renovation needs a change in layout which means that with no change in layout the cost for your kitchen renovation will be in the lower end of the spectrum.

As more people are gravitating towards an open planned kitchen, they often want to change the layout of their kitchen or knock a few walls down. Knocking a few walls down can sometimes require consent if it is a load bearing wall. The need for consent from counsel requires us to draw up architectural drawings which are then submitted to the counsel for approval. This means that the cost will be on the higher side of the spectrum.

Even if you are not breaking down walls but simply changing the layout of your cabinets or position of the sink then consent might be required contributing to the overall cost.

See full project specifications for the above project.

A mix of mid to high range materials used

The materials chosen in any kitchen renovation are the biggest cost factor. Mid-range kitchen renovations often feature higher quality materials which are more durable, last a longer time and are aesthetically beautiful. Most of our clients get mid-range kitchen renovations for their homes. Porcelain tiles are often chosen for these kitchens compared to the laminate chosen for basic kitchen renovations.

We also use mostly designer stone engineered countertops that are imitated to look like high quality marble or quartz. The thickness of these countertops is also often 60mm compared to the 30mm which is used in basic kitchen renovations.

The cabinets for mid-range kitchens are custom built using high quality MDF boards from Melteca or Bestwood which is often wrapped in Thermoform to give it different textures or styles (like shaker style cabinets). If you are going for a modern kitchen then the cabinets often have a ‘handless’ setup.

              Extensive Storage solutions

Having good storage is essential for every well functioning kitchen. Mid-range kitchen renovations often have good built in storage like ‘magic corners’, cutlery drawers, compartments within the cabinets to store condiments, big utensils and pull out bins.

Good storage solutions are especially important for open plan kitchens as is it is important that your kitchen is clutter free.

              Re-wiring and Re-plumbing

Most people renovate their home only once in their lifetime. This means that usually change everything within the kitchen so they do not have to upgrade parts of the kitchen every few year. Most old homes have old plumbing which means that they change the plumbing of the kitchen during renovation. This is especially true when you change the layout of your kitchen and are changing the place your sink was previously in.

The same goes for re-wiring as your wiring could either be old you are changing the position of your plug points.

              Smart kitchen features

Integrating Smart features within your kitchen renovation makes working in your kitchen more convenient but is also better for the environment. Some key smart features in mid range kitchens are as follows:

              • Hot water tap for your sink so you do not always have to boil water when hot water is needed during cooking
              • LED lights on the ceilings with a motion sensor which is not only convenient but better than normal lighting
              • Automatic ovens that can be pre-heated from your mobile when you are on your way home
              • Smart fridges that connect to your phone so you can see the groceries in the fridge even when you are not at home
              • Pull out plugs that are installed on your benchtop. You can pull them out when needed or push them back in when not needed
              • Soft close cabinets from BLUM which close softly even if the cabinet doors are slammed shut
              • LED light strips installed above cabinets

Designer Elements within the kitchen design

Mid-range kitchen renovations often feature a few design elements as the aesthetics are as important as functionality when renovating your own home. You will be working very closely with our in-house designers at our design studio for advice on what materials work together for the type of design you are after.

              3. Cost of a Custom/Designer Kitchen Renovation

You could tear down a load-bearing wall in order to expand and reconfigure the entire kitchen footprint. You could also look into adding an Island. Islands are all the rage due to their functionality and look. Include the option to refinish adjacent areas like the hard-wood floors. To make a custom kitchen is not impossible. Some clients do not want a standard kitchen that they can choose from a catalog. At Superior renovations we can custom make your entire kitchen right here in Auckland. All your cabinetry, bench top etc is made according to your specifications. This type of renovation may cost between $35K- $80K (Custom based, to designer kitchens)

superior-renovations-5, Kitchen Renovation, Bathroom Renovation, House Renovation Auckland

This project we completed in Takapuna needed 5 walls pulled down. The dining area, lounge and kitchen were three separate rooms. Each of them was a tiny room with hardly any room to walk around. In the end we pulled down the walls to create a spacious living space.

The biggest difference between mid-range kitchens and luxury kitchens is the use of premium materials with a focus on designs. Extensive change in layout is also one of the key elements of luxury kitchens and you will be working extensively with our designers to develop the style your kitchen.

Tips from the kitchen remodelling experts:

How much does it cost to renovate a kitchen NZ? Before starting on your new kitchen remodelling project, it’s vital to determine your goals. We always recommend answering these questions to plan your kitchen renovation cost successfully.

              • Why do I want to remodel my kitchen?
              • Is my kitchen’s primary purpose cooking meals, entertaining guests or to re-selling?
              • Do I want to change the layout of my current kitchen?
              • Do I want to update the finishes?
              • What are the top things I would like my kitchen’s design to accomplish?

The answers to these questions will provide you with better insight and will help you understand the scope of your kitchen renovation. They will also help eliminate any unnecessary things that you thought you needed and will bring everyone on the same page.

One of our tried and true tips when it comes to a kitchen remodel budgeting is to follow the rule of one-third. According to this rule, you simply need to divide your expenses into three parts:

              • One-third of the kitchen renovation cost should be allocated to new cabinetry
              • Another third can go towards finishing touches such as accessories, new countertops and flooring
              • The final part of the total remodelling cost of your Auckland kitchen is installation and labour expenses.

              Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prepare for a kitchen renovation?

To get on your way to getting your new dream kitchen, start by gathering together ideas, designs, and your own thoughts to a new kitchen scrapbook. This might be a physical book with written, printed and cut out ideas. Importantly also make a list of the appliances that you are intending to build into your new kitchen. Model numbers are usually enough to find the accurate dimensions online. Your new kitchen cabinets will need to be able to accommodate these whether they are new or recycled from your current kitchen. When it comes to designing your kitchen, we’ll need the measurements of your new appliances so we can build around this.

Do I have to organise sub contract specialist trades such as plumbers or electricians?

We have all trades covered. Superior Renovations have a network of trusted and well respected team of trades who understand our system, follow up process and can work effectively with the rest of our team to ensure a smooth renovation project. So you’re just engaging us (not multiple companies) to complete the whole job from start to finish.

Will I have a choice of fixtures and fittings and can I supply them myself?

Absolutely – if you would like to purchase anything directly and provide it for installation at the appropriate time then we have no objections to this but we always suggest clients to choose our suppliers for a number of reasons, we’re confident of the quality, we can manage the logistics, trade prices, and any troubleshooting during the renovation is easier since we can direct contact.

How long does a kitchen renovation take?

Generally a kitchen renovation will be between 5-6 weeks from date of demolition and this assumes design is finalised and parts have been manufactured (not including splash back which takes additional time for manufacturing)

How much does a Kitchen Renovation cost?

Average cost of a kitchen renovation in Auckland is between $18,000 - $26,000; dependant on the type of materials you choose, design/layout, and if consent it required.

How do you pay for a building project?

Usually it’s setup on a progress payment system as detailed in the building agreement. One advantage of full contract is you only need to make payments to one company and payments are made at specific stages of the project. When you receive a written contract quote, we will provide you with a payment schedule and also a construction schedule so you know what to expect and when to expect it.
